History of Franklin County,
Page 354, 355
John M. Yenter, a native of
Wurtemburg, Germany, came to
Pennsylvania when he was
twenty one years old. He
remained there eleven years
and then went to Dubuque,
Iowa, and in 1867 came to
Franklin County, settling on
section 22, in Geneva
township. He was the first
to start the thriving German
settlement in that
Township. While a resident
of Dubuque, he worked at
Mason work, and also in the
lead mines. He was first
married in Pennsylvania to
Mary Klent, by whom he had
two children, one of which
is still living, Martin
Yenter. His wife died
before he left Pennsylvania,
and he married again. By
the second wife he had two
children. His third wife
was the widow of Christopher
Bollinger, by whom he has
had four children.
Demise of J.M. Yenter – Was
an Old Resident of this
Section; Burial Tuesday
Ackley World Journal –
November 1899
John M. Yenter, long a
resident of this section,
has shuffled off the mortal
soil after a long eventful
career. Born in the
province of Wittenburg,
Germany, in 1821, he crossed
the Atlantic to cast his
fortunes in the new world,
locating in Huntington
County, Pennsylvania, in
1840, remaining there eleven
years, removing to Dubuque
and subsequently to Geneva
Township, Franklin County.
He took possession of the
farm, on which he lived in
1867, and since that time
was a continuous resident.
For fifteen years he was
troubled with asthma and
this with a complication of
illnesses, impaired his
health, so that when the
struggle came upon him a few
weeks since, it was the
final one. He died
Saturday. He had been
married five times, the
wives preceding him in
death, and was the father of
seventeen children, twelve
of whom are living, esteemed
by their neighbors.
Funeral services were held
from the Evangelical Church
in this city, Tuesday
afternoon, Rev. Schmidt of
Hampton, officiating. The
remains, attended by many
who recognized his good
qualities, were interred in
the Ackley Cemetery
