April 1948, Miami Oklahoma " Youth Dies While Engaged in Game At County School
Frankie Vanatta, 15-year-old Sunnyside district youth who was convalescing from a recent attack of mumps,
died a few minutes after he collapsed on the schoolyard. "It either have been due to a heart ailment, previous damage to some
blood vessel in the skull or some natural weakness in a blood vessel in the brain or skull."
A fourth grade Sunnyside school pupil, young Vanatta fell to the school ground while attempting to throw
a football to one of his playmates. He was pronounced dead by a doctor, who arrived at about 9 o'clock.
Describing her pupil as a "frail youth," Mrs. Gladys Crabtree, one of the school's two teachers, said that
young Vanatta was absent from classes for about 10 days after he was stricken with mumps about three weeks ago.
After attending school for three days beginning last Wednesday, the boy was absent Monday,
his teacher said. He became ill last Friday. Reporting to school at 10 o'clock this morning, young
Vanatta left his books on his desk and then went out to play until the 9 o'clock school-opening bell.
With his 12-year-old brother. Jerry, he entered a football scrimmage contest with other boys.
Receiving the ball, Frankie raced to the north side of the playing field and turned to throw the ball
to one of his companions. Before the ball left his hands, he was seen to fall to tho ground. Crying,
"something has happened to Frankie," two small school children ran about 80 yards to homes of neighbors
for help. Responding to the call, Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Gaston and Mrs. L. A. Brewer found the youth
writhing on the ground and removed him into the schoolhouse. He was pronounced dead when the
physician arrived about 10 minutes later. With his father, Roy Vanatta, a laborer in a Baxter Spring's auto-salvage yard, the dead youth and his younger brother had lived about 100 yards north of the school. Today's fatal incident marks the NEBRASKA PICKS FROM GOP TRIO Stasscn, Dewey and Tafr Favored in Balloting Today; Vandenberg Mentioned OMAHA, April 13—I.T)—Ne- braska Republicans pick from a field of seven candidates today tho man they want the GOP national convention to nominate for President in Juno. With heavier - than - usual primary voting in prospect, most politicians here thought top choice lies between Harold E. Stassen of Minnesota, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York and Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. These th a for scaling down farm price support, stuck to his guns in a radio platter broadcast to the state. The Ohioan said that the farm parity formula must be revised. He added: tional Labor Relations board's machinery. The three-judge court upheld the provision on a 2-1 vote. Judge Wilbur K. Miller and Judge Bolitha J. Laws upheld the provision. Judge E. Barrett Prettyman dissented. The case was brought by the CIO National Maritime union. Many top labor union members have been critical of the provision. Some call it an "insult" for Congress to demand that labor men make such a statement. The case is almost certain to be taken to the supreme court. It is the only court which can give a final decision on the constitutionality of the provision. The three-judge court's majority opinion sai second time in about six weeks that tragedy had visited the Vanatta family. His mother, Mrs. Nina Vanatta,
