Fielding  and Elizabeth (Phipps) Amy

In 1880 Harrison County, Indiana Fielding is 14, with parents Jesse and Mahala Amy.  Brother Levi D. is 17, and sister Nora is 12.

In 1885 Jasper County Iowa James Phipps is 47, Felissa L. 17, Fred 16, Martha 15, Nancy 13, Ann 11 Mary J. 7, and Ellen E. 1.  The six oder kids were born in Kentucky, Ellen in Marshall County Iowa.

One tree says Elizabeth Winifred Phipps was born Oct 18, 1868 in Clinton Kentucky, married Fielding Dec 16, 1891 in Jasper County, Iowa.

In 1895 Jasper County, Iowa, Fielding and Lizzie Amy have Gertrude, born in Dickinson County, Iowa.  They're in the Phipps household.

In 1900 Cope precinct Fielding Amy, farmer, born July 1865 in Indiana, and Elizabeth Oct 1868 Kentucky, have Gertrude A. August 1893, Clara J. March 1895, James O. Feb 1897, and Charles July 1899, all four born in Iowa.

Fielding W. Amy proved up on a claim in 25 and 35, 5S 47W in 1907, witnesses John Calvin Kness, Lewis Oran Moser, John Class Davis, and James Alva Partt, all of Kirk.

In 1910 Kirk precinct they're still farming, and have added Loyd, 3, born in Colorado.

James Oscar Amy registered with a Kirk address, saying he was born at Rhodes, Jasper County, Iowa Feb 18, 1897, and his father was born in Cordon, Indiana.

In 1920 Kirk precinct "Frank" and Elizabeth have only Joseph 22, Charles O. 20, and Lloyd 13.

Fielding W. Amy 1865-1948 and Elizabeth Amy 1868-1953 are both buried in Kirk.

Jesse AMY met his future wife when she was hired as a maid by his father Joseph AMY for his wife.  In 1883 he sold the one half of his father's 80 acres he had inherited from his will.  He moved at that time to Jasper County, Iowa.
About 1895 he moved to Colorado where his son Henry had previously moved in 1889.  Jesse and son Levi spent the winter with Henry and are listed with him in the 1895 Denver City Directory at 3202 Madison.  Jesse and Mahala's granddaughter Bessie Ethelyn AMY remembered every morning when she rose, both would be sitting around the stove in rocking chairs, smoking corncob pipes, with their feet by the fire.  All the grandchildren were glad they were there, as Mahala cooked cornbread for them.  That was the only time they ever got it, as Henry had grown up on it, and didn't want to eat it anymore.  After spending the winter in Denver, Jesse moved to about one and a half miles south of where the town of Kirk was later established.

Jesse had no middle name Isaac.  When his son George M. AMY married Elva A. DAVIS in 1888, the record lists his parents as Jesse AMY and Mahala MINGLES.  Both the WPA and Family Search have incorrectly read his name as "Isaac."  While at a glance it could appear to be Isaac, a close comparison of the letters with others by the  clerk leaves no doubt that it is "Jesse."

Death came Sunday May 30 to F.W. Amy pioneer resident of the Kirk community.  Funeral services were held in Kirk Thursday afternoon, June 3.  Burial was in the Kirk Cemetery.  Fielding Wilson Amy was born near Corydon, Indiana July 8, 1865 and died May 30, 1948 at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 22 days.  He was the youngest of the seven sons of Jesse and Mahala Amy.  Mr. Amy left Indiana in 1882, going to Iowa where he met and married Elizabeth Phipps at Baxter, Iowa.  The date of marriage was December 16, 1891.  Three sons and two daughters were born to this union-James Oscar of Englewood, Charles O. of Springfield, Missouri, Lloyd, Mrs. C.R. Darling and Mrs. E. Godfrey of Kirk.  Mrs. Godfrey preceded him in death March 1942.  In January 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Amy came to Colorado where they settled on a homestead one mile south of Kirk.  They lived there until 1921 when they moved to Kirk after Mrs. Amy's appointment as postmaster.  With Mr. Amy as assistant postmaster they served the public in this office for 19 years.  In 1910 Mr. Amy became a charter member of the Kirk Missionary Baptist Church in which he remained a member until his death.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, three sons, one brother, Lee D. Amy and many less near relatives.

Gertrude in 1920 is in Kirk precinct, married to Charles R. Darling, both 26, and they have Francis, 1.  Francis married Clarence J. Crawford and she's buried in Kirk.

CLARA

Clara Amy married E. Godfrey April 8, 1914, recorded in Yuma County.

 Clara (Inez C.) and Erastus Godfrey are in Kit Carson County in 1920, 1930, and 1940

Erastus 1887-1949 and Clara 1895-1942 are both buried in Kirk

Amy, J. O., and Preuss, Florence, married in Yuma County on Sept 4, 1922.

November 1924 "Oscar Amy, a young farmer residing near Kirk, Colo., and a brother of Charley Amy of this city, was quite badly injured last Saturday morning when the hor*se he was riding stepped in a hole and fell, throwing Mr. Amy to the ground with such force that he was rendered unconscious for many hours. Oscar was driving some horses Saturday morning and was riding fast at the time of the accident. A neighbor saw the horse 1 fall, and when Mr. Amy did not get up the neighbor went to his assistance and found that he had been rendered unconscious. He is reported to be recovering from his injuries at this writing."

July 18, 1927 " Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Amy received word of a new grandson, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Amy in Denver, the infant died Friday and funeral was held at Fairmont cemetery Saturday."

In 1930 James O. is in Denver, selling tires and batteries, married to Florence 28, born in Wisconsin.  They have Charles 6, Glenn 5, and Eugene four months.

James is working at a rubber factory in 1940 Englewood, Colorado, with Charles, Glenn, Eugene, June 8, Evelyn 5, and Howard 2.


October 1962 "Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Amy and her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Preuss, all of Denver, and the latter's brother and wife of Milwaukee, Wis., were visiting the Herb Preuss family, the Royce Darlings and other relatives from Tuesday until Thursday. "

August 17, 1972 "Gertrude Darling received word Thursday of the death of her brother Oscar Amy of Englewood. He and his wife, the former Florence Pruess, were to have clebrated their 50th wedding anniversry on August 20. He is survived by his wife nd six children."

Charles Omer Amy registered with a Kirk address, saying he was born July 1, 1899, and nearest relative was Lizzie Amy.

Charles Amy married Maude Christensen Jun 7, 1920 - recorded in Yuma County.

In 1930 Wray Charles is 30, widowed, lodging with the John H. Kearns family, and is a manager of a newspaper.

Charles is in Julesburg in 1940, 40, with son Robert, 15, born in Colorado.  He's operating a printing plant.

(In 1930 Wray James L. Amy, 7 and Robert D. Amy, 5 are with Paul 29 and Maggie 23 Daar.  The boys are listed as GRANDSONs)

Robert is buried in Julesburg, James L. in Fort Logan.
