In 1910 Boulder, Joseph W. Philips is 47 Head, Mary E. Philips 41 Wife, Harry Philips 18 Son, Florence Philips 17 Daughter, Hetty Philips 15 Daughter, Nelson Philips 13 Son, Viola V. Philips 11 Daughter, Mattie Philips 9 Daughter, and Gladys E. Philips 3 Daughter.

Boulder, May 1939 "The ashes of Joseph W. Phillips, a resident of Boulder until six years ago, who died in May in San Diego, were interred in Green Mountain cemetery Wednesday by a son, Nelson Phillips, of Grand Junction, and a daughter, Mrs. Earl Sutter (Viola Phillips), of Eckley, Colo. After visiting friends and staying overnight, Mrs. Sutter and Phillips have returned home. The ashes were buried beside the grave of their mother, who died in 1920. Mr. Phillips, who lived at 827 Maxwell before he left, moved to San Diego to be with a son, Harry. He is survived by Mrs. George Gibbs (Mattie Phillips), of Merino; Mrs. Arthur Birdick (Hettie Phillips), of Hemet, Calif., and Mrs. Leland Long, who will be remembered as Gladys Phillips, a violinist.

EARL'S FAMILY

In 1900 Clay County, Kansas, George Sutter born August 1858 in Pennsylvania, married 20 years to Mary A. January 1864 in Canada. Anna A. July 1882 in Pennsylvania, George A. March 1886, Walter A. May 1888, Stella U. Jul 1890, Z. Roy Oct 1892, H. Jay Feb 1895, EARL V. April 1897, and Delbert Sept 1899, all born in Kansas.

George Albert Sutter, son of George G. and Mary A. Sutter, was born in Gill township, Clay county, Kansas, April 28, 1886, and died in Clay Center, Kan., March 20, 1904, being at the time of his death 17 years, 10 months and 23 days old. He has lived practically all his life in his native township. During the current school year he has been a student in the Clay County High school.
Deceased was a young man of quiet, courteous disposition, never in his life having been heard to complain. He was always cheerful and was particularly chaste and reverent in thought and speech. He was converted during a series of special meetings held in the Methodist Episcopal church at Clay Center last fall and was a working member of the Epworth League, the Berean bible class and the High school Y. M. C. A.
During the past year he took an unusual interest in bible study. He departs this life at a time when he was just beginning to lay and enter upon larger plans for making his a more useful manhood. This world can illy spare such young men as he. But ours is the loss, his the gain.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday at 2 p. m., Rev. Whitmer officiating. The casket was loaded with beautiful floral tributes by the dead boy's friends. The High school faculty, the Y. M. C. A., the Berean bible class and the local Odd Fellows attended in a body. Monday the remains were taken to Gill township and after short services at the Evangelical church at Industry, conducted by Rev. Bruner and attended by the Industry Odd Fellows and a host of mourning friends, were laid to rest in Greenridge cemetery. It was indeed a sad home-coming for those who had so recently seen him go forth in all the strength of his young manhood."

EARL AND VIOLA

Viola Violet Phillips and Earl Vernon Sutter married on 13 Mar 1919 in Logan County.

1920 Yuma County, Earl is farming, 22, born in Kansas, Viola 22 Colorado , and Mary 3 in Colorado.

(Annie S. Kuns, born Annie S. Sutter in Marshall, Michigan February 5, 1869, died in 1940 in Palisade. Her brother Fred A. Sutter of BIsbee, Arizona, survived. Annie's daughter married Congressman Wayne Aspinall.)

1928 Palisade, Colorado "Freda Grimm of Clifton came back last week to help for a few days. Freda left Tuesday evening for the Earl Sutter home at Clifton where she will stay till Mrs. Sutter, who is just recovering from typhoid fever, will be able to do her work."

In 1930 Mesa County, Colorado, Earl V. Sutter 33 is a fruit farmer, Viola P. Sutter 31 Wife, Mary Carol Sutter 10 Daughter, Betty Sutter 8 Daughter, and Ted P. Sutter 7 Son.

August 1931 Palisade " Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sutter and children of Eckley , are visiting relatives and frlenda here. They will remain to work in the fruit."

1938 Palisade, Colorado "Mrs. Earl Sutter and children have returned to their home in Eckley, Colo., after making an extended visit here with friends and relatives"

September 1939 " Ted Sutter of Eckley, who has been helping his brother-in-law, Nelson Phillips, in the peach harvest, returned to his home Monday. "

All five are back farming in Yuma County in 1940.

Earl Vernon Sutter registered for WWII in Eckley, farming, born April 9, 1897 in Clay County, Kansas.

January 1947 "Mrs. Earl Sutter was called to Canon City Thursday by the death of her aunt, Mrs. Carrie Phillips, at her home there. Mr. Sutter drove there Friday."

September 1962 "Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sutter visited her brother and family, the Nelson Phillips, at Grand Junction last week and spent Thursday night at the Ted Sutter home in Greeley on the way home"

Carol Sutter Gelvin 1919–2005
Mary Carol Gelvin, 85, of Wray died Saturday, May 21, at Hillcrest Care Center, Wray.
She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Boulder to Earl and Viola Phillips Sutter.
She grew up in the Eckley area and graduated from high school in 1937. She attended Colorado State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Colorado, and earned a teaching certificate in 1939.
She taught in the Eckley area until she married Ray Gelvin on May 29, 1942, in Benkelman, Neb. They moved back to the Gelvin family farm northwest of Wray in 1946 after Mr. Gelvin returned from military service. They remained there until moving to the Towers and Hillcrest Care Center in 2001. Mr. Gelvin died Feb. 16, 2005.
She loved working in the church and played the organ and piano for worship and funerals. She conducted Bible studies in nursing homes and had a strong faith. She won a Master Homemakers award as a member of the Meadowlark Home Extension Club. She exhibited in the Yuma County Fair, worked in kindergarten classes in Wray for many years and supported her grandchildren’s sports activities.
Mrs. Gelvin loved to cook, bake and share recipes. She sewed and did needlecraft and excelled in painting landscapes. She and her husband hosted many exchange students and families. She loved family gatherings.
Survivors are two daughters, Judy Hergert of Windsor and Jean Thomas and husband Bill of Virginia; two sons, Ed and wife Nancy of Wray and Les and wife Jeanne of Fort Collins; a sister, Betty Bagley and husband Gail of Eaton; a brother, Ted Sutter and wife Donna of Arizona; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Roy Gelvin and wife Lelah Belle Brenner; a sister-in-law, Rena Mae Gelvin Swisher and husband Robert Swisher; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Sutter; and a son-in-law, Ken Hergert.
Services were May 25 at the First Presbyterian Church of Wray. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home in Wray was in charge of arrangements.

FLORENCE

Gail Arthur Bagley married Florence Elizabeth Sutter in Palm Beach County, Florida in 1945.
"An event of interest to the community occurred Sept 5 at Morrison Field, Florida, when Miss Betty Sutter, daughter of Mr. an Mrs. Earl Sutter, and Corporal Gail Bagley, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Bagley, were united in marriage in the camp chapel, attended by Gail's sergeant and wife. Both of these young people grew up in this vicinity attending and graduating from the local school, and the best wishes and congratulations of the entire community is extended to them."

Florence Elizabeth Sutter Bagley 1921–2016
"Graduated from Eckley High School in 1939 and studied at Colorado State College of Education for two years and taught school in Yuma County during World War II. She completed her studies and received her degree from Colorado State College in 1960. She returned to teaching in Missouri and Colorado, eventually closing out her working years as a librarian at UNC's Michener Library. She held a lifetime teaching certificate.
She married Gail A. Bagley Sept. 5, 1945, after he returned from the war. They lived in Colorado, Missouri, and Iowa and raised four children.
Survivors include her husband, three sons, two daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Miss Dorothy Louesa Avery, daughter of daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert William Avery of Eaton was married to Lieutenant Ted Phillips Sutter, army air forces, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl V. Sutter of Eckley, a pretty ceremony at the First Presbyterian church in Greeley, April 19. Rev. Merle G. Allen, church pastor, officiated at the double ring ceremony in the presence of a hundred or more guests. Jean Knapp at the organ accompanied Shirley Delbridge. The bride was escorted to the altar and given in marriage by her father. As maid of honor Miss Jean Morrill of Morrill, Nebraska, a sorority sister, Lieutenant John J. Tobin of Fort Collins, army air forces, attended the groom as best man. Ushers were the Misses Dorothy Matheson, Joella Kirton, Barbara Plumb, and Martha Ann Mann, high school friends of the bride. Larry Anderson, a nephew of the bride, served as ring bearer.
Mrs. Sutter is a graduate of Greeley high school and was enrolled as a junior at Colorado State College of Education. She headed her class as president this year, was president of Pi Omega Pi, honorary business fraternity, and held membership in the Student Council, Kappa Delta Pi, and Pi Lambda Theta, honorary organizations. She is listed in this year’s “Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities.” Her social sorority is Alpha Sigma Alpha.
Lieutenant Sutter was graduated frim the Eckley high school and was a junior student at C. S. C. E. when he was called for active service in the U. S. Army air forces in February, 1943. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and awarded the wings for a pilot at ceremonies at Aloe air field, Victoria, Texas, on April 15. On the C. S. C. E. campus, he was a member of Phi Delta Pi, social fraternity, and Blue Key and Pi Omega Pi, honoraries. Lt. Sutter reported back to Victoria at the end of his leave, accompanied by his wife. They will make their home there for the present.:
