Sterling and Ethel (Sharp) Showalter


STERLING'S FAMILY

Ella J. Fretz was 19 in 1880 Medina County, Ohio, with parents Abram 65 and Elizabeth 62 Fretz.

1881 Medina County "ABRAHAM FRETZ, farmer, P. O. Chippewa Lake; was born Aug. 8, 1813 in Bucks Co, Penn. He being the eldest of a family of three children born to Joseph and Mary (Souder) Fretz; both were natives of Bucks Co. Joseph Fretz was a son of Jacob, whose ancestors were from Germany, as were also the Souders. Our subject was reared upon a farm until 16 years of age, when he went to learn the carpenter's trade. In February, 1836 he married Elizabeth Rahn, who was born in Montgomery Co, March 7, 1818, of a family of nine children — five brothers and four sisters — all of whom attained their majority. Their parents were George and Magdaline (Hunsicker) Rahn. After Mr. Fretz was married, he carried on the cabinetmaker's business for four years, after which he resumed his trade. In the spring of 1848, he came West to Coshocton Co, this state, remaining a short time, then moved to Wadsworth, where he lived two years, coming to Lafayette township in the spring of 1851, purchasing 544 acres of land, which was unimproved, with the exception of 3 acres. No buildings of any kind adorned the premises. Until within four years past, Mr. Fretz has been engaged in contracting and building. His wife and boys carried on the farm in the meantime. Eleven children have been born to them, nine living; viz., Augustus now of Elkhart, Ind.; Amanda now the wife of Phineas Howe of this township; Emeline now Mrs. Joseph Martin in Seville; Samuel in Lafayette; Elizabeth now Mrs. A. Pink of Medina; Levi in Guilford Township; Joseph, telegraph operator on the Tuscarawas Valley Railroad; Myra now Mrs. Martin (Merton) Frazier of Westfield; and Ella yet at home. Mrs. Fretz's father died in 1878 in his 90th year; his wife died in 1871. They were members of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Fretz's father died in 1823; he and wife were members of the Mennonite Church. Both Mr. Fretz and wife are members of the United Brethren Church. "



There's an Ella FLICKINGER 1861-1897 buried in the same cemetery as Abraham Fretz, # 32988621.

Sterling Stowalter was born Feb 8, 1885 in Shelby, Richland County, Ohio to William Showalter and Ella Fritz. William Showalter and Ella Fretz had married November 2, 1881 in Medina, Ohio.
William is single in 1900 Jackson, Elkhart, Indiana, 34, a day laborer, with parents Samuel 61 and Mary A. 55.
William 1866-1929 is buried in Elkhart County, # 60325811, with Samuel 1839-1917 and Mary Ann 1845-1920.

Sterling is living with his grandmother Sarah A. Showalter 61 in 1900 Lorain Ohio. Harry C. is 23, Stella 20, Ella B. 18.

ETHEL'S FAMILY

William Sharp and Mary M. Hunsinger had married February 18, 1879 in Richland County, Illinois.

In 1900 Hitchcock County, Nebraska, William Sharp is a stationary engineer, 46 born in Wisconsin, with Mary 44 in Illnois. Dollie E. 20, Leslie M 16, Ethel born June 1886, and Edith 11 were born in Illinois.

William Sharp for many years a resident of Stratton, died last Friday, August 4th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S.M. Showalter, at Keenesburg, Colorado. The remains were brought here on No. 16 Monday morning, and laid to rest in the Stratton cemetery. Mr. Sharp was an employee in the Burlington water service for nearly thirty years, making his headquarters in Stratton most of that time and has a wide acquaintance here. His broken health necessitated his retirement about three years ago and he had been gradually failing till within a few days of the end when he was taken suddenly ill. He was in his seventy-first year, at the time of his death. Mr. And Mrs. Showalter accompanied the remains to Stratton."

STERLING AND ETHEL

Sterling, 22, married Ethel Sharp on April 14, 1907 in Stratton, Nebraska.

December 1908 Laird, Colorado " Mrs. Stewart of Stratton, Neb., returned home after spending a week with her sister, Mrs. S. M. Showalter."

Mrs. Edith Deeder of Herndon, Kans.; arrived yesterday to spend a couple of days with Mr. and Mrs. Showalter

1909 Eckley Mrs. S.M. Showalter visited her sister at Stratton, Neb. the other day. S. M. Showalter, who has been night operator at Eckley for some time past, has been appointed agent at Laird.
1910 Mrs. Dr. Stewart and sister of Stratton came up to Laird, Wednesday, to visit their sister, Mrs. S. M. Showalter between trains .

1910 Wray "Miss Mae Sharp of St Joe, Mo. visited with her sister, Mrs. Sam Showalter Friday and Saturday of last week."
"Mrs. W. E. Stewart of Stratton, Nebr. visited with her sister, Mrs. Sam Showalter, Thursday and Friday of last week."
November 1912 Frank Showalter, the telegraph operator at Laird, and family have been transferred to Lebanon, Nebraska, where Mr. Showalter has the position as operator A relief agent is now on duty at the Burlington station temporarily filling the position until a permanent successor to Sam Showaltcr is installed.

Mr. Showalter has moved his family to Lebanon, Nebraska, where he has been appointed station agent. Sam earned the reputation of a “strong” agriculturalist the past season in the development of a several acre field of extremely odorous onions. Goodbye Sam, beware of agriculture.
1913 Laird items Mrs. Sam Showalter of Kansas was the guest of Mrs. Dave Roberts last week. "
1919 B. P. Boggs, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Showalter returned home Tuesday evening from Detroit, Mich., having driven through in the new Hudson Super-sixes. Mr. Showalter drove B. L. McKenzie's car. Harve Catchpole and wife are visiting relatives in Nebraska and will not be home for a couple of weeks.

Sterling Marvin Showalter proved up a quarter in township 2N 64W - Weld County, Colorado in 1917. 1920 Eckley Sterling M. Showalter is a depot agent, 38, born in Ohio, with Ethel 33 in Illinois. Clyde 10 and Gerald 8 were born in Colorado.

In 1930 "Samuel" is in Ventura California 43, with Ethel 41, and Gerald 18.

In 1940, still in California, "Starling" 55 and "Ethyl" 53 are living with son Gerald S. 28 and Erlin M. 26, Marvin 7, Gerald W. 5.
With them are Mary A. Showalter – (Clyde's wife) is 31, born in Pennsylvania, with Kathryn 8 and Leroy W. 5.

Sterling is buried in Washougal, Washington 1885-1962 # 18300149.

Sterling M. Showalter of Skamania died Sept. 25 in Columbia View Manor at the age of 77. He operated a bicycle and washing machine repair shop in Washougal from 1945 to 1952, was the former custodian of Skamania school. He had lived in the Prindle area since 1945.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 28 at the Swank Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Edward Hastings officiating. Vault interment was in Washougal cemetery.
Mr. Showalter is survived by his wife, Ethel of Portland; sons Clyde L. of Wishram and Gerald S. of Portland; brothers Everett of Portland and Archie W. of Long Beach, Calif.; 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

1965 Walla Walla "Mrs. Clyde Showalter and Mrs. Ethel Showalter of Portland are visiting at the Ted Murray home.

Ethel 1886-1966 is buried with him # 18300163.

GERALD

Gerald S. Showalter is buried in Vancouver, Washington # 170411492, with Erliss M. (Callantine) Showalter 3 170411476, and their son Gerald W. 1935-1991.
Erliss Mary Callantine was born April 15, 1914 25 north of BOzeman to Feliix Earl and Mary Callantine.


CLYDE

Mary Ann Showalter, born Feb 20, 1909, died in Wasco County, Washington on July 17, 1980, spouse Clyde.
She was born in Philadelphia to Albert M. and Catharine M. Strauss.

Clyde Showalter and Ruby Rude married on June 12, 1981 in Marion County, Oregon.

Ruby J. Showalter, born May 14, 1906, died October 1, 1985 in Multnomah County, Spouse Clyde.
She's buried in Minnesota,# 50413580 with her spouse Arthur G. Natwick 1904-1975.
Clyde Leroy Showalter, born Nov 17, 1909, died in Washington state Dec 22, 1990, spouse Ruby.


BROTHER EVERETT


Evert Showalter is in Medina, Ohio in 1900, born May 1887 in Ohio, nephew of Joseph Martin 71 or Sarah E. born January 1844 in Pennsylvania.
(Eveline Fritz was in Medina, Ohio in 1850, 7, daughter of Abram 36 and Elizabeth 32 Fritz. Augustus was 13, Amanda 11, Emeline 7, Samuel 5, an Elizabeth 3. )

Evert H. Showalter, 24, residing in Missoula, Montana, son of William C. Showalter and Ella Fritz, married Caroline L. Young, 24 on December 21, 1910 in Missoula.

In 1930 Fargo, E. H. is 42, a railway dispatcher, now married to Georgiana, 27.

Everett Howard Showalter, born May 19, 1887 in Shelby, Ohio, was in Fargo, North Dakota when registering for WWII, working for the Northern Pacific.

He's buried in Portland, Oregon 1887-1966 # 162640079, with Gerogiana 1903-1980.
