GEORGE'S FAMILY

In 1900 Phelps County, Missouri, George W. Shook is 37, Emma L. Shook 31 Wife, Leslie E. Shook 13 Son, Grace L. Shook 11 Daughter, Hazel E. Shook 5 Daughter, Glen Shook 2 Son, and Joseph C. Shook 2/12 Son.

December 1912 Yuma "G. W. Shook came into possession of a stock of merchandise at Eckley, Thursday, and will probably move to that place in the near future."


August 1916 " Leslie Shook of Denver visited homefolks a portion of last week."

March 1917 Wray "The booze element of Eckley is somewhat shaken up over tho arrest of G. W. Shook on a charge of bootlegging. This is as it should be. Drunkenness has of late become entirely too common - for a dry community. But thanks to the efforts of a couple of young men who got busy yesterday, Sheriff Hitchcock started a house cleaning and promises to keep it up until booze becomes so scarce in Eckley that some of its thirsty citizens will be compelled to go to drinking water."



March 1927 "Mr. and Mrs. George Shook and their son, Glenn, of Eckley and another son, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Shook, were rescued Saturday from a snowdrift in the raging blizzard which swept Colorado last Friday. Four youths from Calhan, Colo., battled the blizzard for four hours before reaching the half-frozen trio. Mrs. Shook is in a serious condition as a result of the exposure and both legs, as far as the knees, and both hands were reported frozen. The Shocks are well known in Brush, having visited with relatives, the Elmer Duenwegs and other relatives on numerous occasions."

April 1927 "Elmer Duenweg of Monte Vista, Colo., was in Brush Wednesday and Thursday of last week visiting with friends while on his return home from Eckley, where he had taken Mrs. Duenweg's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Shook and their son, Mr. and Mrs. Shook. He stopped in Aurora on his way home and expected to get to Monte Vista Sunday."

June 1927 "Joe and Leslie Shook of Eckley were placed under arrest by Sheriff Yates last Friday as a result of the fire which burned the Shook shoe store building in Eckley Evidence tended to building had been purposely burned There was a fire insurance policy on the building for $1,000 which had been taken out by the father of the Shook boys. A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday. At this hearing the case was dismissed."

Funeral service was conducted last Thursday at 2:00 p.m. for George W. Shook, at the Ritchey Funeral Home. Rev. M.G. Carpenter officiated and burial was made in the Yuma cemetery.
The following is the life sketch read at the services.
George W. Shook was born in Phelps County, Mo., June 16, 1860, and passed away January 2, 1950, at the age of 89 years, six months and 17 days.
After living at various places, he came to Yuma county in 1903 and had lived here the remainder of his life.
He was united in marriage to Emma L. Curtis on March 15, 1885 [in Phelps County, Mo]. To this union five children were born, one of whom passed away in 1940.
He operated a shoe repairing business in Yuma for many years, and later in Eckley, but had been in retirement for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife and four children.--Yuma Pioneer, Thursday, Jan. 12, 1950

Mrs. Emma L. Shook, mother of Mrs. A.D. Vinsonhaler, died at the Yuma hospital Sunday, July 9. She was taken to the hospital just a few days previously when she suffered a bad fall and possible broken bones.
Emma L. Shook, daughter of E.C. and Catherine R. Curtis was born near the town of Hemlock, Mich., in the year 1866.
She received her early education in Hemlock and while quite young, moved with her parents to the area near Rolla, Mo. It was here she finished her education and grew to womanhood. In 1885 she was united in marriage to George W. Shook, who preceded her in death in 1949. To this union five children were born. About 1906 the family moved to Yuma.
She is survived by three children, Harold of Fort Morgan, Grace Vinsonhaler of Yuma and Glen of Pueblo; eight living grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was a resident of this area for a half century, and through the years made a host of friends in this community. A kind and loving wife and mother, loved by all who knew her. She was a zealous worker in the church until advancing age confined her to her home and will be greatly missed by everyone. Sweet and peaceful be thy slumber resting safe from pain and care till the voice of Jesus calls us and we gather over there.
The funeral service was held at the Assembly of God church in Yuma on Tuesday, July 10 at 2:30 p.m., with Rev William Satterfield in charge of the service.
Interment was in the Yuma cemetery with arrangements by the Ritchey Funeral Home.--Yuma Pioneer, Thursday, July 12, 1956

January 18, 1912 " Elmer Duenweg nf Brush and Miss Hazel Shook of Yuma were married in Denver last Thursday. They will reside in Brush."

September 1911 Brush, Colorado "Elmer Duenweg made a flying trip to Denver on his motor ovcie Sunday morning."

January 1912 "Elmer Duenweg left this morning for Denver where he will be married to Hnzel Shook of Yuma. Mr. Duenweg is one of the rising young business men of Brush, while his bride is a belle of our neighboring village." Brush Republican.

In the Matter of the Estate of Rosa J. Duenweg, Deceased. Notice is Hereby Given, That on Monday, the 29th day of July, A. D. 1912, being cne of the regular days ol the June, 1912, term of the countycourt of Morgan county, in the state of Colorado. I, Elmer Duenweg", Executor of said estate, will appear before the Judge of said court, present my final settlement as such E .ecutor.jfray the approval of the same, and will then apply to be discharged as such Executor. At which time and place any per son in interest may appear and present objections to the same if any there be. Dated at Brush, Colorado, June 28, 1912. August 1923 Brush " Mr. and Mrs. Harry Delsing and son from Chicago, are spending the week with their nephew, Mr. Elmer Duenweg and family."

August 1924 Brush "The local Methodist Sunday School enjoyed a picnic at Doods Bridge Monday evening given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Duenweg and family, and Mr. and i Mrs. F. A. Havener and family, who will move to Aurora, Colo., Saturday to make their future homes.
Messrs. Duenweg and Havener have bought a hardware store at that place. Over 150 members of the church were present, each bringing a well filled basket. Tablecloths were spread on the ground and the contents of each basket were placed upon them.
Those present enjoyed a bountiful picnic, supper and a social time, after which they returned to their homes. The best wishes of the community go with the Duenweg and Havener families to their new homes."

July 1926 Aurora "The Duenweg Hardware Company has changed handa, the sale taking place on June 24th. B. M. Atherton, a long-time lumber and hardware man of Denver, has purchased the Interests of Elmer Duenweg and Frank Havener.
Mr. Atherton’s son, Paul M. Atherton, will manage the store and as soon as he has disposed of bis property in Denver, will, with his wife, make hia home here. They are both thoroughly experienced hardware men, and will maintain the splendid policy of the old firm.
Mr. Havener will be with the new firm for a time, while Mr. Duenweg's plans are indefinite. We are glad to welcome the new firm to Aurora and extend to them the best wishes of our business community.
At the same time we are more than sorry to lose such aterling citizens as Duenweg and Havener are. They both enjoy a splendid reputation here; are fine business men and a real credit to any town. Wherever they go, they carry with them the very best wishes of the many friends they have I made in Aurora."

December 1929 Fort Morgan "Mrs. Elmer Duenweg, who Had been visiting her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Geo Shook of Yuma, for a week, stopped for a short visit with her aunt. Mrs E. C. Wilkins, when returning to her home In Monte Vista. "

In 1930 Monte Vista, Elmer Duenweg 41 has a hardware store, Hazel Duenweg 34 Wife, George Duenweg 17 Son, Harry Duenweg 12 Son, Paul Duenweg 10 Son, and John Barnes 49 Lodger.

In 1940 Monte Vista, Elmer Duenweg is 50, Hazel Duenweg 48 Wife, Paul Duenweg 20 Son, and Walter S. Speckman 24 Lodger.

GLENN

Glenn Curtis Shook , born 23 Aug 1898 Lake Springs, Reynolds County, Missouri, , died 29 Oct 1956 Pueblo, Colorado, Burial Yuma Cemetery Yuma, Yuma County, Colorado, Plot New Addition 176 Memorial ID 74285669.
"Glenn C. Shook was born to George and Emma Shook, August 23, 1898 at Lake Springs, Mo., and died October 29, 1956 at Pueblo, at the age of 58 years two months and six days.
He came to Yuma with his parents in 1912 and continued to live with them until a few years ago when failing health forced him to be taken to the hospital.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by one brother, L.H. Shook of Fort Morgan and one sister, Mrs. Grace Vinsonhaler of Yuma.
Funeral services were held at the Ritchey Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 31 and burial was in the Yuma cemetery. Rev. J.W. Arnold of Wray officiated.
Pall bearers were Gus Miller, George Piper, J.C. Ridpath, Chas. Young, John Riley and Wm. Bock.--Yuma Pioneer, Thursday, Nov. 8, 1956."

JOSEPH

Joseph Clifford Shook , born 11 Feb 1900 Saint James, Phelps County, Missouri, , died 11 Apr 1941 Yuma, Yuma County, Colorado, Burial Yuma Cemetery Yuma, Yuma County, Colorado, Plot New Addition 176 Memorial ID 74285689.

"Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Morris chapel, conducted by Rev. J.E. Canaday, for Joseph Clifford Shook who expired Friday at the Community hospital where he had been a patient for a few days. , died was attributed to a heart condition from which he had suffered for some time. Burial was in the Yuma cemetery. The deceased, who was a son of George W. and Emma L. Shook, was born at St. James, Mo., on February 11, 1900. His early childhood was spent near Rolla, Mo., from where the family moved to Yuma in 1910. In 1913, He went with his parents to Eckley where they resided for several years. Then the family moved to Pueblo for a short period and returned to Yuma in March of 1939. He was a barber by trade and had been employed in that capacity both in Yuma and at Eckley. Survivors include his parents; sisters, Grace Vinsouhaler and Hazel Duenweg; and brothers, Leslie E. and Glen C. Shook.--Yuma Pioneer, Thursday, April 17, 1941"

"Mr. Joe Shook was laid to rest in the Yuma cemetery at the age of 41 years. Mr. Shook was a long time Eckley resident and was at one time a barber here. The community sympathy is extended.
Ora Morris took a car load to Yuma Sunday to pay last respects to Joe Shook, whose funeral services were held there."
