John H. McCarthy, Eckley

 



John H. McCarthy married Ellen Monahan on June 29, 1871 in Labette County, Kansas.

In 1880 Champaign County, Ohio, John is working on the railroad, with Ellen 40 both born in Ireland.
Timothy 22 works on the railroad, Mary 19, both born in Wales. Thomas 15, Catherine 13, John 9, Florence 7, Charles 5 and Ellenora 3 all born in Ohio.

John proved up a quarter in 12, 1N 46W - about five miles southeast of Eckley.

McCook Nebraska, January 1896. "The remains of Mrs. John McCarthy of Eckley, Colorado, who died last Thursday, was shipped here, Saturday evening, for interment. The funeral services were held in St Patrick's church, Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. W. Hickey officiating, interment following in Calvary cemetery. The deceased was the wife of the Burlington section foreman at that place. She leaves a large family."

Elenore McCarty was orphaned in the Great Irish Potato Famine, as was her husband John McCarthy. They married in 1855 or 1860 in County Waterford, Ireland. Due to the extreme conditions associated with the famine, they moved to Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, where their oldest two children were born. They had four sons and four daughters.
Between 1860 and 1864, they immigrated to N. Lewisburg, Ohio. They later lived in McCook, NE, and Eckley, CO. John McCarthy worked as a section foreman for the Burlington Railroad.

1897

In 1899 there was a dance at the McCarthy school house, and , a sSunday school organized at that school in 1907, and a literary scciety in 1909.

In 1900 Eckley, John McCarthy is widowed, born March 1835 in Ireland, farming,. He immigrated in 1860.
Son Charles A. was born May 1874 in Ohio, a stock raiser.

February 1901 "Charlie McCarthy, of the firm of John McCarthy & Sons, of Eckley, was in Yuma Thursday after the calves purchased of Fred Scott."

TIMOTHY

One tree says Timothy stayed in Ohio, marrying Mary Strapp and was in Franklin County in 1900, a tinner born September 1860 in Wales, immigrating in 1868, with mary October 1865 Ohio. Walter W. June 1889, Charles F. July 1891, Helen M. July 1843, Nora E. January 1896, and Catherine January 1898 were born in Ohio.
Mary died in Franklin County in 1918, Timothy in February 1927.


FLORENCE

George W. Hartman’s 1916 obituary states that Alfred Hartman and the family moved to Nebraska in 1876 to homestead near Lebanon, NE, which is about 30 miles southeast of McCook near the Nebraska-Kansas border.
In a 1947 interview of Florence Agatha McCarthy Hartman by her grandson Jean François Hartman, she remembered her husband, George William Hartman, talking about an Indian raid in 1877 or 1878 that forced the family to leave with all its belongs. Alfred Hartman apparently was not with them; according to Florence Hartman, he periodically left the family to go on wild goose chases.
During the raid, George William Hartman drove the wagon with the family’s possessions; the others walked with Lula Belrida carrying the six-month-old Ada in her arms.
About 1889, the family moved to Oklahoma Territory. An 1890 special census of Civil War veterans and their widows taken in Oklahoma Territory, lists an Alfred Hartman living in Crescent City, OK. The first land run was held in the spring of 1889, although the “Sooners” had been settling in the territory illegally since about 1879.

1891 McCook, Nebraska "George Hartman, of the B. & M. bridge force, was rusticating in this burg, this week."

George W. Hartman, age 26, married Florence McCarthy on Augusg 20, 1893 in Wray.

1894 McCook "Mrs. George Hartman of McCook visited relatives in Haigler, a few days this week."

August 1901 Yuma "J. B. McCarthy, sr, and son-in-law, Mr. Hartman, of Eckley were transacting business in the hub Monday. They say there will be some good corn in that vicinity."

November 22, 1901 Yuma "George Hartman and Charles McCarthy of Eokley were in town on business Tuesday."

1905 McCook "Mr and Mrs W. M. Rice of Haigler were in the city part of the week on business. They were guests of their sister Mrs. G. W. Hartman. Mrs. S. H. Neville on her way home from visiting friends west visited Mrs. George Hartman and her nephews John and Charlie Rice this week."

John and Ellen's sixth child, Florence Agatha McCarthy, and her husband, George W. Hartman, made their home in McCook. Both are buried in St. Patrick Calvary Cemetery.

George died in August 1916 and is buried in McCook
"George W. Hartman, who has been failing in health for some time, came home from work Saturday night feeling very despondent over the fact he was no longer able to work, and in a dispirited way told some of his friends he met on the street this fact, which seemed to depress him greatly.
He rose early the next morning, before the rest of the family, and went out to the barn on the rear of his lot, 710 West 4th Street. When breakfast was ready he had not returned to the house and when some of the family went to the barn to look for him, they found him hanging from one of the rafters, dead. In May he was operated upon and has only been able to do but light work since. For years he has been in charge of the pile driver for the Burlington and returned to his duties as foreman Friday, east of here, returning home Saturday, discouraged because he could not stand the work and it is thought his physical condition preyed upon his mind he suddenly became deranged.
The deceased was born September 30, 1866, near Osceola, St. Clair county, Missouri. His parents moved to Atlanta, Georgia, a year later, and in 1876 they came to Nebraska, locating on a homestead near Lebanon. In 1886 he began to work for the Burlington in the bridge department and until his death Sunday he has served his employers faithfully in the same line of work.
He was married to Miss Florence McCarty, at Eckley, Colorado, August 31, 1893, when they moved to this city where they have lived continuously. Five children were born to them, four of whom survive: John, Florence, Anna and William.
Funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church Wednesday morning, Rev. A.H. Kunz, O.M.I., officiating, and his remains buried in Calvary cemetery. The family have the sincere sympathy of everyone in their sorrow. "

In 1920 Craig, Colorado, Florence is farming, 47, widowed, with son William A. 9 bon in Nebraska.
June 1923 Craig Colorado "Mrs. Florence Hartman and daughter, two sons, daughter-in-law and four nephews, stayed at Farrell's Wednesday night on their way to the homestead at Lone Mountain basin. where Mrs. Hartman and the boys will spend the summer. Florence and Mrs. John Hartman will return to Craig in about a month."
September 1924 "Miss Florence Hartman, who for the past three years has been employed as teacher of the third grade, is making a short stay at Grand Lake, before going to Boulder where she will enroll as a student in the University." THIS IS FLORENCE'S DAUGHTER.

1933 "Announcement was received in Craig this week of the arrival of a baby girl to Mrs. Florence Hartman Quinn on October 24. The little one has been named Mary Quinn. Mr. and Mrs. Quinn live at Bisby, Arizona . Mrs. Quinn is a daughter of Mrs .P. A .Hartman of Denver, formerly of Craig, and taught school in Craig and other parts of the county for several terms. "

1925 Craig "John A. Hartman, a former Craig teacher, is now located in San Francisco with his French wife and son Jean. He has been fortunate in securing fourth place in a recent civil service examination for postal clerks. There were 2,140 applicants who took the examination and only 850 received a passing mark. Hartman ranked well at the top of the list."


1927 Craig, Colorado
In 1930 Adams County, Colorado, John is 60, still a section foreman, living iwth his widowed sister Florence A. hartman 57, both born in Ohio. Florence is running a boarding house.
1939 "Mrs. J. T. Quinn was released from Hotell Dieu hospital in El Paso, Texas, December 10, to return to her home in Bisbee, Arizona. Mrs. Quinn will be remembered in Craig as Florence Hartman, a former teacher in the Craig schools."

In 1942 they were living in the Craig, Colorado area

John Alfred Hartman 1896-1955 is buried in Denver.
"John A. Hartman was a mail carrier in Denver from the late 1920s until his death.
Raised in McCook, NE, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War I and sent to western France to repair and build bridges.
There he met his future wife of 33 years, Yvonne Reynaud. He returned to France after being discharged to marry her in the presence of her parents in 1922.
Soon after their return to the United States, John and Yvonne Hartman moved to Craig, CO, near where his mother Florence McCarthy Hartman was attempting to claim a homestead. During that time, he worked on the building of the Moffet Tunnel.
John and Yvonne Hartman had two sons and four grandchildren. 

Florence Margaret Hartman married Joseph Thomas Quinn at Clifton, Arizona on June 12, 1932. Anna M. Hartman was a witness.
Florence H. Quinn 1899-1940 is buried in Bisbee, Arizona # 80666313.

In 1930 Denver, Anna is a stenographer, 28 and brother William A. 19 is with her, no occupation.
Anna M. Hartman Bleb 1901-1991 is buried in Jefferson County, Colorado # 91505609, with Joseph Alfred Bleb 1879-1966.

William married Elizabeth A. Laurieta on June 28, 1936, recorded in Denver.

In 1940 Denver, William A. Hartman is 29, a helper in a machine shop, married to Elizabeth 23 born in Colorado.
William and Elizabeth A. Laurita had Wi;liam George Hartman on September 4, 1940 in Denver, and W.G. died October 25, 1996.
William, born June 28, 1910, died in January 1981.
W.G. is buried in Jefferson County # 63950373.

Elizabeth 1916-2014 is buried in Denver # 133415219. "Elizabeth A. Hartman, 97, of Denver died on July 23, 2014. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, William A., and son, William G., preceded her in death.

Philip A. Laurita, Sr., 96, of Denver died January 8, 2008. Husband of the late Geneva Laurita; father of James (Lynda), Sr., Philip A. "Butch" (Gloria), Jr., Dennis (Debby), Sr.; grandfather of 7; great grandfather of 8; great greatgrandfather of 2; brother of Elizabeth Hartman; and uncle of many.



CATHERINE

Catherine was the daughter of John and Ellen McCarthy, born February 7, 1866 in Champaign County, Ohio. She married Stephen Hardy Neavill on July 11, 1891 in Eckley, Colorado. Together they had 7 children: Frances Elizabeth (1893-1967), John Thomas (1895-1969), Helen Marie (1897-1983), Stephen Edward (1898-1961), George Leo ((1901-1986), Paul Leonard (1903-1974) and Richard Foster (1907-1972

1909 Wray "The little babe of Mr. and Mrs. Neavill has been very sick the past week but at this writing is considerable improved .
Catherine died 1935 in Custer County, South Dakota, and is buried there, # 97462307.


MARY

Mary A. McCarthy married William Rice on October 1, 1881 in Champaign County, Ohio.

Charles Richard Rice was born January 21, 1887 at Eckley Colorado, when he registered for WWI in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, married with a son and two daughters.

In 1900 Haigler, Nebraska, William Rice is 45, born in Ireland, Mry E. 40 in Wales, married about 1881. John L. is 16, Charles 13, Marguerett 8, and William 5.

February 23, 1901 Wray "John McCarthy of Eckley is visiting this week with his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Rice."


In 1910 Scotts Bluff Nebraska, William is 50, Mary E. 46, Charles 23, Marguerite 18, William 15, and Leo 5.

Mary Evangeline McCarthy Rice 1860-1956 is buried in McCook, # 139479601.

In 1920 Bridgeport, Nebraska, Charles is a store proprietor, 32, with Lyla V. 31, Lawrence C. 7, M. Lurelle 4, and M. Josephine 3.

Charles 1887-1943 is buried in Omaha # 149138602.

THOMAS

In 1900 Kern County, California, Thomas McCarthy is a stationery merchant, born July 1864 in Ohio, with Olivia B. Augsut 1869 Iowa.
Teresa was born March 1890 in Nebraska, John April 1881 Nebraka, with Leo 7, Sarah E. 6, Oliva M. 5 and Clare 1 in California.

October 31, 1902 "John McCarthy Sr. left last Sunday for Randsburg, Calif., where he will visit his son, Tom, and family."

Thomas McCarthy 1864-1927 is buried in San Diego # 29772235, with Olivia B. 1869-1912.

February 1901 "Charlie McCarthy, of the firm of John McCarthy & Sons, of Eckley, was in Yuma Thursday after the calves purchased of Fred Scott."

October 30, 1903 "Last Sunday a big boy baby was born to Mr. an Mrs. Charlie McCarthy of Eckley."

October 1905 "John McCarthy Sr. arrived in Eckley Tuesday evening for an extended visit with his son, Chas. McCarthy."

1907 "George Hartman of McCook made his brother-in-law, Chas. C. McCarthy, a flying visit Sunday, coming up on 13 and returning on 14."

1909
In 1910 Yuma County, Charles McCarthy is a merchant, 36, born in Ohio, with Mary E. 30 Ohio. Hellen L. is four months old, born in Colorado.
1910 Wray Rattler - Eureka items - "A call at Charley McCarthy's neat little store found them very busy waiting on customers but never too busy to win the respect and esteem of all by their polite and business-like manners."



In 1920 Charles, Mary and Helen are in Imperial County, California, running a general store.

In 1941, when Mary Ann Smith Castle Van Horn died, her stepdaughter Mary Van Horn McCarthy was living in Bellflower, California.

Paul Henry Wayte was born February 15, 1903 in Butte, MT and died September 27, 1978 in Whittier, CA.He married Helen Lucille McCarthy October 6, 1934 in Riverside, CA. She was born December 31, 1909 in Wray, CO, and died July 11, 1991 in Whittier, CA

"1985 David Alan Wayte, a former philosophy student who refused to register for the military draft, Tuesday was ordered to spend six months under house arrest at his grandmother's home. U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter, who accepted Wayte's guilty plea in June, could have sentenced the 24-year-old Whittier man to as much as five years in prison. The judge instead opted to place Wayte on probation with the condition he not leave his grandmother's home except for emergencies.:
Wayte's lawyers had asked he be allowed to perform community service as an alternative to prison. Noting Wayte already does similar work, Hatter said: 'I'm punishing you by not allowing you to perform such service.' Wayte earns $5 per hour working with developmentally disabled adults at a Pasadena school. He also volunteers his time at a Pasadena shelter and soup kitchen. Dressed in a baggy corduroy suit, the bearded pacifist said outside court said he felt the innovative sentence was 'punishment.' 'I won't be able to go to work or do what I have been doing,' he complained. Wayte and his wife, Jacque Holt, currently live with his disabled, 76-year-old grandmother, Helen Wayte. Wayte said he would spend the six months 'studying.'


December 30, 1936 - January 30, 2015 Paul Alan Wayte lived his entire life in California. Born in Huntington Park to Helen (McCarthy) and Paul Wayte, he spent his early years in Bellflower. He graduated from Whittier High School (where he was a Yell Leader) in 1954, Stanford University in 1958 and Stanford Law School in 1960. He practiced law in downtown Los Angeles for over fifty years, first with Adams, Duque and Hazeltine and later with Dewey Ballantine and DLA Piper. He was very active in bar groups relating to his real estate practice including the Chancery Club. Alan served as President of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and Chairman of the Real Estate Sections of the California Bar and the Los Angeles County Bar. He also served for a time as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Pepperdine Law School, USC Law School and Southwestern Law School, in each case teaching a course in real estate transactions.
For more than 35 years, Alan served as Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. After retirement, he was active as a volunteer for non-profits, including teaching literacy at the Monrovia Public Library. He loved to play golf and tennis and was a member of Annandale Golf Club, The Valley Hunt Club and Birnam Wood Golf Club. He was also a 50 year member of The California Club.
A lifelong lover of history, Alan traveled with his wife, Nancy, to sites throughout the world often on educational tours sponsored by the Stanford Alumni Association. He was also an avid genealogist, having traveled throughout North America and Great Britain to meet family members whom he had contacted through his research and exploration of many graveyards. Alan was a people person, widely loved for his intellectual curiosity, his engaging sense of humor, and his generosity of spirit.
In addition to his wife of nearly 40 years, Nancy Kelly Wayte, he leaves three children from his first marriage, David (Sophie), Larry (Laura), and Marcia Burnett (Jim) and five grandchildren, Thomas, Jonah, Henry, Alice and Shelby. He also leaves his two stepdaughters Lee Anne Mitchel and Mary Beth Leonard (John) and his step-grandchildren Patrick, Glen, Kelly and Will. As well, Alan leaves his sister Marcia Westlake (Richard), niece Holly Heckman and great nephew Andrew.
The family is extremely grateful to Maureen and Marlene Martinez for their loving care during the past 17 months. "Remembering Alan" will be at future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Huntington Hospital Cardiac Services or to Monrovia Public Library Foundation.

ELNORA

1899 Eckley "William Miller, A. K. Miller and Charlie McCarthy were Yuma visitors Monday. Nellie McCarthy visited with Miss Lizzie Hoy of Wray last Saturday and Sunday."

April 27, 1900 "License to wed was granted by County Clerk Loring to Thomas Haines of Haiglor and Miss Nellie McCarthy of Eckley."

In 1900 Haigler, Nebraska, Elnora Haines is just married , 23, with Thomas D. Haines 21.

They're in Furnas County in 1920, R.P. F. Haines Jr. 40, Nellie M. 28, Guy 6, and Bernadine 3
Ellenora Reginia "Nellie" McCarthy Haines is buried in McCook # 139479167, born 1876 in Preble County, Ohio, dying in Denver in 1946.

JOHN B.

Also in 1900 Eckley, John B. McCarthy is section foreman for the railroad, born March 1870 in Ohio.

In 1885 Seward County, Nebraska, Jessie L. Anderson is 7, with Allen 40 and Srah F. 30. Nellie is 5, Addie m. six months.

In 1900 Seward County, Allen is still farming with Abbie 41. Jessie is a teacher, born Sept 1877, Addie at school, Mary 12 adn Anna 10.

May 13, 1904

In 1910 Holdrege, Nebraska, John is a railroad foreman, 39, born in Ohio, with Jessica 29 in Illinois, married four years. Paul 5 and John 1 wre born in Nebraska.

Jessica L. McCarthy died October 16, 1915 in San Diego County, age 38.

John is a foreman in Mohave County, Arizona in 1920, widowed, 50, with Paul 15, John 11, James 9, these three born in Nebraska, and Wm. 7 in California.
William C. was born April 9, 1912 in San Diego County.
1925 Craig "John, James, Charlie and Joe McCarthy, who have made their home with their aunt, Mrs. F. A. Hartman, for the last four years, departed Saturday for Hackberry, Arizona, to remain with their father, J.B. McCarthy."

In 1929 Los Angeles, John B. McCarthy attended a picnic of former Northwestern Colorado residents in Los Angeles.

In 1930 Adams County, Colorado, John is 60, still a section foreman, living with his widowed sister Florence A. hartman 57, both born in Ohio. Florence is running a boarding house.

In 1940 Los Angeles, John is 71, with son John B. 25 and his wife Marie 28 born in Oregon.

June 1921 Craig, Colorado "Paul McCarthy, 17, had a narrow escape from death yesterday while riding for horses on Iles mountain. While riding fast over a little flat his horse stepped in a badger hole, throwing the boy with great force. The horse's neck was broken by the fall. Although badly bruised, young McCarthy made his way on foot some eight miles to the George Pltchford ranch on Williams fork, from where he was taken to his home at the V. H. Alspaugh ranch."
One tree said Paul B. McCarthy 1904-1982 is buried in Eugene, Oregon # 57855570, with Helen 1911-1998.

Charles W. McCarthy, born April 9, 1912 in California, died August 24, 1970 in San Francisco.

James was in Craig, Colorado in 1920, 20, working for the widowed Cora McLachland 60.
James L. McCarthy -1910-1989 is buried in Camp Verde, Arizona # 19279657.

1925 Craig "John McCarthy, a last year’s Craig High school student, was seriously injured near Los Angeles recently, when he was thrown from a railroad motor car onto a steel-spiked cattle guard, crushing his skull. He is in the Santa Fe hospital at Los Angeles."

1927 Craig "John McCarthy, Craig boy, who has been in California for the last three years, has returned to Craig for a month's visit with friends and relatives here. John is now a student in one of the large high schools at Pasadena, California. He will graduate next June."

1929 Craig "John McCarthy, a few years ago a Craig High school student, last week was graduated with high honors from a Los Angeles aeronautical school and given a pilot's license. He is to be a co-pilot on one of the big Ford planes plying between Los Angeles and San Francisco."
