Verda Maxine Heater was born February 2, 1914 at Esbon, Kansas to Dorothy Lammey Heater and Elmer D. Heater at her Lammey grandparents' home. She was the eldest of 10 children. When Maxine was 9 years old, the family, consisting of Elmer, Dorothy, Maxine, Gerald, Glenn, Lyle, and Elmer Jr., moved to a farm in Colorado that was NW of Schramm. They left Kansas for Elmer's health.
Children born to the family in Colorado: twins Donald and Ronald, Bob, Darlene, and Shirley. Maxine attended schools in Yuma and Otis. When she was a senior in high school, she lived with the Harms family part of the year, so she could graduate from Yuma with the class of 1932, as the family had moved to rural Otis.
At a dance, Maxine met Harry (Buck) Jones, the love of her life. They were married at St. Francis, Kansas on December 28, 1939. Witnesses to the marriage were Maxine Elliott and Glenn Heater. For three months they lived with Buck's parents, Dora and Charles G. Jones. They then moved seven and a half miles south and four miles east of Akron, renting from the Federal Land Bank for four years. Here, Buck said they farmed, milked cows and picked up cow chips. They then moved six miles south and one and a half miles west of Woodrow, in 1944. Buck said they farmed, milked the same old cows, squeezed eggs out of the chickens, and stayed alive trading horses. They said it only rained twice. Once too early and once too late. Their corn crop came up and wilted. So, they moved south of Platner, six miles east of his parents place, for three years. They then moved a house from Lloyd Anderson's to Buck's parents' yard, living there 11 years. They said they always lived close; you don't go far on five gallons of cream and eight dozen eggs per week. Their final home was north of Midway to a ranch purchased from Jr. Heater, where Maxine's parents had lived. Children born to Buck and Maxine are Dorothy Maxine, Ruby Irene, Judy Louise, and Charles David. Maxine also had an elder daughter, Juanita. Maxine shared a love of horses with Buck.
