Yuma County Pioneers - The HIGGINS families

Allen Azra Higgins

Azra Allen Higgins was born February 18, 1870 in Quincy, Illinois to Benjamin and Frances Virginia (Morris) Higgins.  He grew up there, and married Bessie Campbell October 11, 1893.  They had twelve children: Willard, Stella, Leona, Lillie, Alva, Claudie, John, Arthur, Velma, Marvin, Joseph and Eldon Leroy. 

The 1885 census of Washington Township, Ringgold County, Iowa has Bessie Campbell, 10, born in Ringgold County, daughter of Elijah and Deborah Campbell.  Elijah is 44, born in Indiana, Deborah 38, born Keokuk County, Iowa.

They moved to Brush, Colorado, and then in 1906 to homestead south of Eckley.. T1S R46W

 In 1920 Happyville are Arza Higgins 49 Illinois,  Bessie 45 Iowa, Willard E. 27 Iowa, Stella D. 22 Iowa, Lillie P. 17 Colorado, Alvie A. 13 Colorado, Claudie F. 11 Colorado, John E. 9 Colorado, Arthur M. 6 Colorado, Velma I. 5 Colorado, and ten-month-old Marvin E. Colorado.

In 1930 they have Claude, John, Arthur, Velma, and Marvin.

OBITUARY - REV. A. A. HIGGINS

Allen A. HIGGINS, a resident of Yuma County for 30 years, died Monday morning [January 6, 1931] at his country home some 10 miles south of Eckley. Funeral services were held at Bethel Church, south of Eckley, Wednesday morning. Rev. Roscoe WHITTENBURG officiating and the interment was at the Eckley Cemetery.

He was born in Ringgold County, Iowa in 1870. Something like 35 years later he moved to Yuma County and took up a homestead 10 miles south of Eckley. The family has resided in that section ever since, but the quarter section has grown to over three full sections, although the original homestead continues to be part of the present big farm. Mr. HIGGINS was known as one of the most successful wheat and corn growers in northeastern Colorado.

He leaves his helpmate of many years [Bessie (CAMPBELL) HIGGINS, ten children, five married and five single, eight grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. The brothers are Marion A. HIGGINS, Harry HIGGINS and Carl HIGGINS, all of whom reside in or near Yuma. The sisters are Mrs. Lulu GILMORE of Otis and Mrs. Minnie REYNOLDS of Delphos, Iowa.

CLAUDE F. HIGGINS

 "Claude married Delda Lucille MORRIS"

 

In 1940 Lake County, Oregon is a "Claud" F. Higgins, 29, working at a logging camp. 

Claude F. Higgins enlisted in the army November 20, 1940 in Deschutes County, Oregon, saying he was born in 1910.

1954 Woonsocket, South Dakota -Fedora area "Mr. and Mrs. Claude Higgins of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Eldon Mann and daughter Margie of Longview, Washington spent last week here visiting relatives and friends.  Mrs. Higgins is the former Delda Morris and Mrs. Mann the former Margaret Morris."

Delda L. Morris, 20, of Fedora, married Myron J. Willard, 21, of Madison, July 16, 1930 in Mitchell, South Dakota.

In 1940 Delda Morris, born in South Dakota, is in Kelso, Washington.  She's 29, a fire insurance agent, lodging with the Chas. and Hazel Holbrook family.

Morris-Mrs. Margaret F., 80, of Longview, died April 8, 1964 at home. Born March 25, 1884, in Fedora, S.D., she moved from there to Longview in 1941. Mrs. Morris was a member of the Longview Woman's Club and attended the Longview Community Church, where she was a member of Lakeside Circle. Surviving are the widower, Guy, at home; a son, Darrel of Longview; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Mann of Longview, and Mrs. Delda Higgins of Portland; a sister, Ann Kieffer, and a brother, John Kieffer, both of Fedora, S.D.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Steele Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Warren officiating. Interment will be in Longview Memorial Park. Steele Funeral Home is in charge. 
 
 

 

Oregon death records have Claude F. Higgins born May 5, 1909, dying in Multnomah County August 30, 1997, with a spouse of Delda.

STELLA HIGGINS

Stella B. Higgins 24 married Darrel McGrath 22 November 8, 1922 in Akron. Darrel was the son of Dallas and Mary A. McGrath in 1900 Phillips County Kansas.

 (In 1910 Mary is widowed in Phillips County.  "Otis D." is 9.

In 1930 Darrel and Alva they're in Happyville, on the same census page as father Azra and sister Lillie.  They have Dallas, eleven months, and mother Mary A. McGrath, 69, is with them.

In 1940 Happyville they have Dallas 11, and Ronald 9.  John Minshall, 30, born in Missouri, brother-in-law, is with them. with Velma 25 born in Colorado and Carolyn 2.,

One tree said Stella died  Nov 1975, Seaside OR

Otis D.  1900-1976 and Stella B 1897-1975 are buried in the Eckley cemetery. 

Mary A. McGrath - 1861 - 1936 is there, and Ronald Allen McGrath, July 30, 1930 - September 22, 2001, MSGT USAF Vietnam is also buried there..  Doris F. McGrath August 7, 1942 - August 19, 1942 must be a daughter.

WILLARD ALLEN HIGGINS

Willard served in WWI as a "Corporal, Sup. Tn."

Willard, 30,  married Mary O. RUSH, 22 June 22, 1926 in Greeley, Colorado.

Mary must be the Mary O. Rush in the Ringgold County 1910 census.  She's six, daughter of Samuel H . and Verna L. Rush.  Brother Ray V. is three.

In 1920 they're still in Ringgold, and have added Bessie F. 9.

Verna must be the Verna Lee Clayburg Higgins dying in Greeley June 17, 1926, because Samuel married Nona Calvin in Greeley in 1927.

 

In 1930 Samuel and Nona are farming in Abarr, on the same census page as Anna Higgins.

In 1940 Sam and Nona are in Greeley, and Nona's father Willis Calvin 79 is living with them.  Willis was in Greeley in 1920 and 1930, too, so perhaps that's why Mary and Willard were married there.

In 1930 Willard and Mary are in Bend, Oregon, and have Willard, 2. born in Oregon.  Willard is a clerk in the post office.

In 1940 Willard is still at the post office.

In the Bend 1948 directory Willard is a rural mail carrier, and Willard A. Jr. is a student.

Willard is buried in Pilot Butte Cemetery, Bend, Oregon, born in 1897 in Redding, Iowa, dying March 10, 1965, with Mary O. Higgins 1904-2003.  With them is James V. Higgins 1930-1935

The 1993 Eugene, Oregon directory has Willard A. Higgins, born August 11, 1927.

Oregon death index has Mary Opal Higgins, born 1904, dying in Lincoln February 4, 2003.

Mary "Dottie" Higgins

Mary O. "Dottie" Higgins, 99, of Lincoln City died Feb. 4, 2003 of natural causes. (Lincoln Co.)

She was born Jan. 30, 1904 in Mount Ayr, Iowa to Verna L. (Clayberg) and Samuel H. Rush.

She married Willard A. Higgins on June 22, 1926. He preceded her in death in March 1965.

In 1967, she moved to Lincoln City from Bend.

She was a member of the Lincoln City Congregational Church choir for many years. In 1971, when the Lincoln City senior center opened, she was asked to lead a sing-along that developed into The Lincolnaires, which she directed until 1990, when she retired for health reasons. She formed the Beach Combers band in 1971, which went on to win the 1996 music competition at the Lincoln County Fair, as well as first place and a trophy at the Oregon State Fair.

She enjoyed beachcombing and collecting floats, agates, and shells. She was an artist, and enjoyed china painting.

Survivors include a son, Willard A. Higgins Jr. of Eugene; two grandchildren, Michael R. Higgins and his wife, Bette, of Vancouver, Wash., and David A. Higgins and his wife, Laura, of Hillsboro; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Susan Lovenstein and her husband, Larry; and a great-niece, Tracy Lovenstein. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; and a 5-year-old son, James Vernon Higgins.

A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pilot Butte Cemetery in Bend. A memorial service will he held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Lincoln City Congregational Church. Niswonger, Reynolds and Tabor Funeral Home of Bend is handling the arrangements.
 

VELMA IRENE HIGGINS

John Lincoln N. Minshall b. June 29, 1909 in Mercer Co., MO. He was married June 3, 1936 to Velma Irene Higgins. They had at least two children (Carolyn Irene Minshall b. Dec. 26, 1937 and Jerry Lee Minshall b. June 4, 1941.)

In 1940 they're living with the McGrath family in Yuma County.

Carolyn Minshall, age 19 married Adrain Lee Coffman, age 18 in Kirksville, Missouri January 7, 1957 BUT THIS COULD BE ANOTHER ONE.

Jerry L. Minshall is a native of Kirksville, Missouri, and a graduate of Truman State University. The farm house where he was born and raised was eight miles from the main line of the Santa Fe Railway.

He is a former schoolteacher, songwriter, and professional singer. He lives with his wife, Jan, in Nashville, Tennessee, where he is a broadcaster at WWTN and WSM Radio, home of the legendary Grand Ole Opry.


Velma is buried in Kirksville, Missouri, with a FAG birth of October 3, 1914 and death of June 28, 1986. John is also there, with a burial date of May 31, 1994.

LILLIE PEARL HIGGINS

Lillie married Fred Lorenzo Flemister on April 17, 1928. 

In 1930 Happyville they have Delford V, fourteen months., and had six children - Delford, Bernard, Virgil, Preston, Clarence, and Carroll.  They moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico for seven years, then moved back to Yuma County.

We are grieved to chronicle the death of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen
Higgins of northwest of Vernon. The little one had been suffering with the
small pox for about a week. Owing to the contagious nature of the condition
the little one was taken to Eckley and buried early Monday morning.

ALVA AUSTIN HIGGINS

 Hazel Beach married Alva Austin Higgins October 26, 1929,and one tree said they were living  in Independence, Missouri in 1935 and 1992

In 1930 Happyville Alva is married to Hazel G. 21 - the page after sisters and parents.

In 1940 they're in Englewood, Colorado, where Alva works at a picle and meat packing company.  They hae Keith 8 and Joyce 5.  In 1935 they were in Estes Park

In 1974 Hazel Beach "Higgens" - clalss of 1927 - attended the Eckley school reunion.

Alva May 13, 1906-March 19, 1959  and Hazel  August 7, 1908-November 8, 2008 are buried in Independence, Missouri.

Keith Beach Higgins died in Raleigh North Carolina December 7, 2004.  Death record said he was divorced, and was born May 30, 1931 in Colorado.

LEONA J. HIGGINS

 Leona married James Theodore MCCLANAHAN;   23 April 1919 in Yuma County, Colorado. To this union three known children were born. 

In 1930 Happyville, on the same page as her parents, James and Leona J. have Orie B. 9, Lois V 7, and Burl aA. , twenty months.

James and Leona are buried in Kirksvile, Missouri

Orie B. McClanahan, 89, of Kirksville passed away Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center. The son of James T. and Leona (Higgins) McClanahan, Orie was born February 12, 1921 in Eckley, CO . On June 10, 1943 in Kirksville, he was united in marriage to Betty Irene Bauer who preceded him in death on July 17, 2007. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Lois V. McClanahan. Orie is survived by one son, Marvin L. McClanahan and wife, Rebecca of Kirksville; one daughter, Joyce M. McClanahan of Kirksville; two grandchildren, Andrew L. McClanahan and wife, Astrid of Elko, NV and Bryan A. McClanahan of St. Louis, MO; one brother, Burl McClanahan of Columbia, MO and one uncle, Marvin Higgins and wife, Donna of Denver, CO and nieces, nephews and cousins. Orie moved to Missouri from Colorado in 1932 with his parents. He lived in the Hazel Green area, north of Brashear, MO, where he attended the Hazel Green School. He worked on the family farm until he was called to service by his country. Orie entered the United States Army on November 30, 1942 and was honorably discharged on October 20, 1945. He was a member of the Medical Detachment of the 301st Infantry, 94th Division, serving in the European African-Middle Eastern Theater, including France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He received four bronze stars. After serving in the military, he returned to the Kirksville area. He was employed by Montgomery Wards in the tire department. He later started his own business, McClanahan Tire & Battery. Orie served customers all over northeast Missouri. After he closed his business, he was employed at the Bank of Kirksville and Kirksville Manor Care Center. He was affiliated with the Church of God Holiness and the Church of the Nazarene in Kirksville. Orie was known as a hard worker who would always go the extra mile to help someone else, expecting nothing in return. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011, at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home with Reverend William Hayton, Reverend Ralph Wheeler and Reverend Bob Price officiating. Music will be provided by Gary McClanahan singing "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" and "Till The Storm Passes By". The congregational hymn will be "The Eastern Gate". Organist will be Donald Cooper. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.

 

Pallbearers will be Andrew L. McClanahan, Bryan A. McClanahan, J.R. Peek, Bud Niccum, Roger Speak and Jack Kelly. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011, until the time of the service at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home 2100 E. Shepherd Avenue, (Highway 6 East), Kirksville, MO 665-3744 • 665-2233

 

Lois Verene (Higgins) McClanahan died April 27, 2010 - the Kirksville Daily Express  said she was born December 10, 1922, and had siblings Dorothy (Sams) McClanahan and Betty (Bauer) McClanahan, Orie B. McClanahan of Kirsksville and Burl A. McClanahan of Columbia, Missouri.  SSDI has last residence as Columbia.

Lois is buried in Highland Park Cemetery, Kirksville. - the same cemetery as her parents.

JOHN HIGGINS

John married Willie May COLE;- who was on the same 1930 census page.  Daughter of John T. and Sallie W. Cole.  The Cole's had been in Happyville in 1920, but in 1910 were in Carroll County, Missouri.

In 1940 Yuma, on South Albany Street, John 29 born in Colorado and Willie 31, born Missouri.  They have Dan 3 and eight-month-old Bernice.  John is a truck driver for an oil company,.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in Gales Creek Cemetery, Giles Creek, Oregon, for John E. Higgins, who died Oct. 26 at age 87.

Mr. Higgins was born Dec. 31, 1910, in Vernon, Colo. He worked in the Portland shipyards during World War II and was a steamfitter for the A.W. Mortinsen Co. for 26 years before retiring in the early 1970s. In 1969, he moved to Cornelius. In 1956, he married Helene M.; she died in 1996.

Survivors include his daughters, Darlene Loving and Zoe McCauley, both of Forest Grove, and Norma Jones of Orange, Calif.; son, Dan of Tempe, Ariz.; brother, Marvin of Aurora, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The 1937 directory has Higgins, Arthur - 3/4E 7S 1/4E 3-1/2S Eckley, Rt. 2 Eckley, R.   Farmer, Ph. 1835 Eckley.

In 1940, on West 7th Street in Yuma, is Arthur Higgins, 27, single, a farm laborer.

Arthur married Dora Jean GREENWOOD;

Possible - Dora Jean Greenwood, 3, in Scott County Kansas, daughter of H.E. and Pearl Greenwood.  She's with them in McPherson Kansas in 1940.

Marvin is with his parents in 1920 and 1930, but is living alone in 1940 Happyville.

Marion Austin Higgins

Marion was born January 25, 1875

In 1885 he's in Ringgold County - age ten - Section 31 of township 67, range 20.

He's farming in Ringgold in 1900, married to Stella, born March 1875 in Iowa. Stella Campbell was single in 1895 census, so they must have married 1895-1900.

In 1910 Ringgold, Iowa he's 35, farming, married to Estella 33, born in Iowa.  His half-brother Chester Campbell, 11, is with them.

He's in the 1915 Iowa census of Ringgold  married

  May 3, 1917

He registered for WWI in Yuma, saying he was born January 25, 1875, and that his nearest relative was Francis V. Horsford of Delphos, Ringgold County, Iowa.

He claimed land in both T2S R47W  and T2S R48W

In 1920 Yuma he's a real estate agent, rooming with the Francis Carr house.

In 1930 Hale, Colorado Marion is widowed,  a real estate dealer.

The 1934 directory has M.A. Higgins selling insurance in Yuma.

The 1937 Wray directory has M.A. Higgins with a land office in the Graham Building.  Florence Higgins is a housemaid, living at 803 S. Main.  Marion Higgins is also listed in Yuma, "Higgins Land Co.", First National Bank Bldg.

In 1940 Wray Marion is working for the Federal Land Bank,  He's married to Catherine, 48, born in Pennsylvania. She's probably the widowed Katherine Woodward in 1930 Trinidad, Colorado, with Ila C. 16   In 1910 Walsenburg, Colorado she was 18, married to Bueford Woodward.  Catherine and John B. Woodward  were in Lamar, Colorado in 1920.

She must be the Catherine Woodward dying September 1967 in the Masonic Cemetery, Trinidad, Colorado.

 

 Marion died November 24, 1946 and is buried in Mount Ayr, Iowa.Rose Hill Cemetery.

Stella M. Higgins March 22, 1877 - April 26, 1917 is also there.  Goldia F. Higgins February 13, 1914 - February 22, 1918 are  his wife and daughter Iowa Gravestone

Harry Franklin Higgins

 One tree says Harry was born March 12, 1887 in Ringgold married Anna Hannah Jacobs (1886-1975)

In 1900 Anna H. Jacobs was 13, with parents William and Martha Jacobs in Ringgold County.

Harry came to Yuma County  T2S R48W in 1909, and Anna came a bit later with the first two kids.

In 1910 Yuma "Henry" and Annie, with Grace and Agnes, are farming by Yuma, with brother Carl following on the census.

In 1920 Center, Yuma County Harry and Anna have Gracie, Agnes, Doyle, and Ruena six monthss

In 1930 Harry is a lodger in Yuma.  Anna, 44, is in Abarr with Grace M. 25, Agnes V. 23, Doyle A. 18, Rowena M. 10, and Harold K. 7.

The tree said Harold K. Higgins was born October 3, 1922 in Eldorado Springs Missouri and died September 2 1961 i Yuma.

And that Gracie May Higgins was born March 25, 1904 in Diagonal, Ringgold County Iowa and died 1995 in Yuma

And that Agnes was born July 1, 1906 n Diagonal and died in Yuma.

And that Doyle Austin Higgins was born April 26, 1911 in Yuma and died November 24, 1984 in Denver.

In 1940 Delta County, Colorado Doyle is 28, born in Colorado, with Margaret, 26, born in Iowa.  They have Frankie 4 and Shirley 1, both born in Colorado.

In 1940 Denver Harry 56 is in Denver, saying he was there in 1935.  He has a partner, Murral Washer, 50 born in Nebraska, another widower.

Anna is in Abarr in 1940, saying she was married.  Gracie 36 and Harold 17 are with her.

Agnes has married Delbert Sigmon, and they're in Abarr in 1940.  Delbert is 33, Agnes 34, is a teacher. , and they have Richard 3.

The tree said Harry died February 11, 1969 in Denver.

SSDI has Anna dying May 1975, last known address as Yuma.

Carl Nathan Higgins

Carl married Martha Reynolds in 1907 and they had eleven children

In 1910 Yuma Carl Higgins is 22, farming, married to Mattie 20.  They have Donald 3 and Marie 1.

In 1930 Carl and Mattie have Donald 23, Merle 21, Leroy 18, Robert 16, Florence 11, Alonzo 9, Rosie V. 8, Flavil 4, Goldean 2, and Norma G. five months.

The 1934 directory has Carl N. and Anna farming in section 22, 2S 48 W

Death claimed the life of Carl Nathan HIGGINS at the Cedardale Nursing Home in Wray, Colorado on Monday. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Yuma Methodist Church with Rev. Frank HARVEY officiating. Burial was made in the Yuma Cemetery with arrangements by Ritchey Funeral Home.

Carl Nathan HIGGINS was born to Benjamin and Virginia (MORRIS) HIGGINS at Ringgold County, Iowa on September 17, 1886. He passed away at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 4 days.

His childhood days were spent on a farm near Redding, Iowa and on March 3, 1907, he was united in marriage to Martha May REYNOLDS in Delphos, Iowa. In 1910, they moved to Colorado, where they homesteaded in the Abarr community. To this union 11 children were born; Donald, Roy, Robert and Alonzo; Florence PLETCHER and Thelma BUELTELL of Yuma; Merle HIGGINS of Muncie, Indiana; Austin HIGGINS of Denver; Rosie HARPER of Roswell, New Mexico; Goldean MITCHELL of New Castle, Wyoming; and Norma JACKSON of Westminister, Colorado.

Death claimed the life of Mrs. Martha HIGGINS at the Yuma Hospital Friday, October, [1962]. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Yuma Methodist Church with Rev. Jon NIEVES officiating. Burial was made in the Yuma Cemetery, with arrangements by Richey Funeral Home.

Martha "Matt" May HIGGINS was born to Alonzo and Martha REYNOLDS at Collie County, Kansas on March 13, 1890. She passed away at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 13 days.

She accepted the Lord as her personal savior at the age of 18 in the United Brethern Church.

Martha was united in marriage to Carl Nathan HIGGINS on March 3, 1907 in Delphos, Iowa, and in 1910 moved to Colorado where they homesteaded in the Abarr community.

To this union 11 children were born; Donald HIGGINS; Roy HIGGINS; Alonzo HIGGINS; Florence FLETCHER and Thelma BUELTELL of Yuma; Robert HIGGINS of Otis; Merle HIGGINS of Coolidge, Arizona; Austin HIGGINS of Denver; Rosie HARPER of Roswell, New Mexico; Goldean EATON of New Castle, Wyoming and Norma JACKSON of Westminister, Colorado.

Preceding her in death were her mother, father and 3 brothers. She is survived by husband, Carl; 11 children and 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, April 15, 2011 at Ballard Chapel, Roswell for Rosie Darnell 87, who passed away Monday, April 11, 2011 at Mission Arch Care Center. Rev. Gorton Smith of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.

Rosie was born April 28, 1923 in Yuma, CO. to Carl and Martha May Reynolds Higgins. Her parents preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Rosie moved to Roswell in 1945 and was employed at Walker Air Force Base Exchange until she married Henry Harper in 1948 and moved to Alamogordo. She was employed by Sears Roebuck and moved back to Roswell in 1950 and continued working for Sears until her retirement in 1984. Henry preceded her in death in 1981, she then married Joe Darnell in 1983 and he preceded her in death in November 2005.

She was a member of BPO Does and Charter which she was past president of.

Rosie is survived by her brother, Alonzo Higgins of Yuma, CO.; sisters, Florence Pletcher, Norma Jackson and Thelma Bueltell all of Yuma, CO.; step-daughter, Patsy Darnell of Hobbs; grandson, Jeff Darnell and great granddaughter, Emi Darnell both of Portales, NM.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces and nephews.
 

 

GOLDENE HIGGINS

Goldene married Henry Smith, Portland, Oregon

In 1983 Goldean Mitchell of Portland had a child Patricia Bennett, 31, die of cyanide-laced Tylenol.  She had a 14-year-old daughter Sandra D. Eaton from a previous marriage.

In 2004 her name was Goldean MITCHELL, and there's a tombstone in Valley Memorial Park, Hillsboro, Oregon with Goldean Mitchell - June 21, 1927 - May 21, 2005

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005, in Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro for Goldean M. "Goldie" Mitchell, who died May 21 at age 77. Goldean Higgins was born June 21, 1927, in Yuma, Colo. She moved to Aloha in 1964 and to Hillsboro in 1972, was a molder for ViewMaster for more than 20 years. In 1963, she married Henry W.; he died in 1983. Survivors include her son, Walter Eaton; daughter, Mary Leeper; brothers, Austin Higgins and Alonzo Higgins; sisters, Norma Jackson, Thelma Buetell, Florence Pletcher and Rosie V. Darnell; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Fir Lawn.

Flavil Austin "Frosty" Higgins, Sr. was born in Yuma December 23, 1925.  In 1944 he left Yuma to work with the CB&Q Railroad in Denver.  In 1948 he married Idella Regelin, daughter of Alfred and Edna Regelin of Otis

They had three children - Cynthia, Flavil Austin Jr., and Carl.  In 1980 they were living atr Akron.

Donald HIGGINS, Yuma resident, died unexpectedly Friday at his home.  The
funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Yuma Assembly of God
Church with Rev. Russell WYCOFF officiating.  Burial was made in the Yuma
Cemetery.

Donald Clifford HIGGINS was born to Carl and Martha HIGGINS December 27, 1906,
at Mount Ayre, Iowa.  Jesus called him home March 1, 1974, at the age of 67
years, 2 months and 2 days.

In 1910 he moved to Colorado with his parents where they homesteaded in the
ABARR community.  In 1933 he was united in marriage to Roena Maxine (MYRE)
HIGGINS.  To this union two sons and two daughters were born.  Don was a
member of the Assembly of God Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Roy.  He is survived by
his wife, Roena, four children, Paul and wife, Jean; Elzene and husband James
SPROUSE; JoAnn and husband, Dale AAGESEN, all of Yuma; Larry and wife, Sharon
of Akron; nine grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Robert and Alonzo
HIGGINS, Florence PLETCHER, Thelma BUELTELL, all of Yuma, Merle of Muncie,
Indiana, Austin of Longmont, Norma JACKSON of Westminister.

 

ALONZO HIGGINS

Alonzo Franklin Higgins was born in Abarr, Colorado May 3rd, 1921. He was number six out of eleven children born to Carl and Martha Mae Higgins. He passed away on January 27th, 2012 at the age of 90 years at Yuma Life Care. He lived his early childhood years in the Abarr area, attending the Abarr school thru the 8th grade. He worked on the family farm and for neighbors during his teenage years. He then moved to Denver and was employed by the Mangus Metal Company as a ladleman. His primary job was to move molten metal in a ladle in a bearing manufacturing plant.

Alonzo was drafted into the United States Army on June 5, 1942. As a Sargent Squad Leader in the 323rd Infantry Division serving in the Phillipines and Western Pacific, he was leader of a 60 millimeter mortor squad and supervised the tactical deployment and operation of guns. After fighting in two major campaigns over two years, 1 month and nine days, he was discharged on December 30th, 1945. During his service he earned the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Phillippine Liberation Ribbon/1 Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Returning to Yuma, he learned the mechanic trade thru the GI Bill and went to work for the Hansen Garage which was located in the current NAPA store.

On June 21, 1947, Alonzo married Lotus Willow Mensendick Mumm. Lotus or Billie as she was called was a widow and had four small children. Nadine-age 12, Shirley-age 10, Darrel-age 7 and Kay-age 5. Then in July, 1951, Ronnie Dean was born and in May, 1955 came Elvin (Shorty) Lynn. Alonzo, Billie and family farmed and raised cattle on their farm east of Abarr. A turkey production operation was added in the mid 1950's. They raised 10,000 turkeys a year and sold them to the GM Gisi Company of Yuma. To this day, Alonzo would not eat one bite of turkey.

In 1960, Alonzo and Billie moved their family into Yuma and Alonzo went to work for Tom's Builders, building houses and doing construction. Upon the retirement of Tom Lasater, he then went to work for Herbs Builders (Herb Damm). Alonzo still kept busy after he retired helping his brother in law, Elvin Lasater with construction work. He also was the local lawnmower repairman as well as fixing many a bicycle for area kids. He resided in the house he built in 1960 until moving to Yuma Life Care Center in January, 2010 due to failing health.

Alonzo was preceded in death by his wife Lotus (Billie); son in law, Leonard Knudsen; daughter, Shirley Nelson; son, Darrell Mumm; daughter and son in law, Kay and Virgil Lorance; grandsons, Randy and Bradley Lorance, brothers, Donald, Merle, Roy, Robert and Austin and sisters Rosie V and Goldine.

Alonzo is survived by sons, Ron (Deb) Higgins, Elvin (Shorty) Higgins; daughter, Nadine Knudsen; sisters, Florence Pletcher, Norma Jackson and Thelma (Bob) Bueltell, daughter in law, Pat Mumm and son in law, Don Nelson; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and special friends Harold and Katsy Chappel.
The funeral service was held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Yuma, Colorado with David Hoch officiating. Interment followed at the Yuma Cemetery. Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.

Luella Grant Higgins, born February 17, 1873 in Ringgold County Iowa, married James Henry Campbell, born February 23, 1860 in Ringgold County.

In 1910 Yuma County William King is 52, Luealla 37.  They have Cecil C. 9, Eva C. 7, and Clara K. 3.

Luella divorced William in 1911 in Yuma County - case number 1093.

CECIL

Cecil was born March 16, 1901 in Mount Ayr, Iowa to James and Luella Campbell.  James died when Cecil was eighteen months, old, and the family moved to Yuma County in 1910.  Cecil met Mary Elizabeth Sherril, born in Harlan County Nebraska on June 18, 1905 to Harry S. and Margaret McGrath Sherrill.  They were married Apri 27, 1924 at Eckley, living on the Frank Wakefield place, then the Flynn place.  Their daughter Virginia was born in 1925.  They moved to Denver, where ecil was a streetcar conducvtor, and moved back to Heartstrong in 1928.  They had Calvin that year, but he died seventeen moths later.  In 1933 they had Thelma Marie.  They moved back to Denver, where Cecil worked as a groundskeeper for Mt. Olivet Cemetery, then a grain inspector.  In 1936 Melvin Ross was born.

They returned to Heartstrong in 1947, then ranched southeast of Otis.  Cecil died September 1957, Mary Apri 1981.

RAY

Ray married Edith M. Bowers (born November 1887 in Kansas) November 5, 1915 in Wray.

They had Nellie Wynona August 23, 1916 and William Max August 30, 1925

Ray married Bertha Olive McCalmont October 18, 1927 in Warren County, Pennsylvania, per one tree.

In 1930 Ray is 35, Bertah 35, Nellie Y. 14, Mary I 10, Ruth 9, Darrel D. 7, Max W 4, Dortha eighteen months, and Paul 3. 15, Vera M. 12, and Howard V. 9.  The last three were born in Pennsylvania, and surely are Bertha McCalmont Campbell's chidren (by Clyde McCalmont).

In 1940 Ray is 46, Bertha 45, Darrell 16, Max 14, Dorothy 11, Hazel 9, and Cora 7.

Nellie married George R Bramblett - and they had Ronald C. Bramblett, born in Mildred November 10, 1938..  Other sons were Wayne Cecil, Dwight and Jim.  Daughters were Carol Wynona (Baker) and Roberta (Chezik).

Howard V. McCalmont, son of Mrs. Bertha O. Campbell, was born in Youngsville Pa., April 27, 1920, where he lived until November 1927. In that year he came to Colorado with his mother, stepfather, brother and sister, where they made their home south of Eckley. He attended grade school in Colorado, but in 1934 returned to Pa. to live with his grandmother and to attend high school there.  He was killed in WWII and is buried in Eckley.

Vera Mae McCalmont married  Lawrence D. Wright November 28, 1929 in Salida,  Colorado.  Both were 23, which is too old for "our" Vera M., unless there's a typo on the marriage card.

Paul E. McCalmont  22 married Leah Baker 19  in Littleton, Coliorado April 4, 1938.
