SARAH JANE GRAHAM

Mathias and Anna's daughter Sarah Jane Graham, born January 16, 1838 in Wayne County, Indiana, married Abner S. Boggs 1857 in Taylor County Iowa, was in Clarinda, Iowa in 1880, and living in Eckley in 1900 and 1910, dying February 3, 1918 in Wray.  Abner S. 1837 -1910 "Co. F 23rd IA Inf" and Sarah J. 1838 - 1918 -are in the Eckley cemetery.

ABNER S. BOGGS, one of Clarinda's highly esteemed citizens, was born in West Virginia, October 20, 1837, and is the son of James and Jerusha (La Master) Boggs. His grandparents were pioneers in West Virginia and his parents removed from that State to Iowa in 1839 and settled in Van Buren County; later they went to Monroe County while the Indians were yet there; they were the fourth white family to settle in that section. The father died in August, 1848, and the mother still resides in Monroe [page 558] County, Iowa. Abner S. received his education in the old-time log schoolhouse. In 1856 he came to Taylor County and worked on a farm for a year and then came to Clarinda and followed farming four years. In the fall of 1860 he erected a shop and worked at the blacksmith's trade until 1862, when he quit the shop and put in a crop on the farm. August 9, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, Twenty-third Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the service at Des Moines. He was sent to St. Louis, Missouri, and during the following winter he was in Camp Fatterson, Missouri. He was placed in the Thirteenth Army Corps. Soon after the siege of Vicksburg he was taken ill and was confined in the hospital six months. He participated in the engagements of Grand Gulf, Champion Hill and Black River Bridge; he was also at Fort Esperanza, Spanish Fort and the Mobile campaign. His regiment was mustered out at Harrisburg, Texas, but he was on detached service and was not then discharged but received his papers at Davenport, Iowa. Upon his return from the war he again engaged in blacksmithing and continued to work at the trade until 1886.
Mr. Boggs was married February 1, 1857, to Miss Sarah J. Graham, a native of Illinois and a daughter of Mathias and Anna (Layman) Graham. The father lives in Wadsworth, Nevada, and the mother died in that town, October 29, 1884. Mrs. Boggs is one of a family of eight children, six of whom still survive. She is the mother of four children: James M., agent for the H. & S. Railway Company at Clearfield, Iowa; William C, an engineer by occupation, residing in Colorado; Charles O., an express agent at Creston, Iowa; and Benjamin F., who resides at home. The parents are members of the Baptist church at Clarinda, Mrs. Boggs having been an active member since 1859.

He also belongs to Warren Post, No. 11, G. A. R. and the A. O. U. W. Politically he affiliates with the Republican party.

together by the strong bonds of love and the web of kindness stand around them and buoy them up in their last expiring moments. - Yuma Pioneer, reported in the Holyoke State Herald of January 1890.

William Mackey proved up a homestead in section 9, 7N 47W (very near the Barr claims) in 1911. But this might be ANOTHER William Mackey - also born in Iowa - this William was ten years older and married to Olive.

In January 1926, what was then officially The Cooper-Atha-Barr Real Estate and Mortgage Co. ("Phone 2400"), with offices at 128 S. Orange Ave., unveiled a section of College Park's Country Club section: 188 lots priced from $1,500 to $4,000.

The Orlando 1921 directory has Harry W. (Myrtle A) as vice-president of Cooper-Atha-Barr Co, living at 400 E Central Avenue.  Leal G. Barr, bookkeeper at the First National Bank, also lives there.

JAMES MONROE GRAHAM

In 1880 Saunders County Nebraska J.M. and Della have Edith 3 months, and parents M. 69- a carpenter - and Anna 52 Graham.

1888 Fort Collins Courier "The round up, with Ben. Graham as foreman, seems to be giving general satisfaction to parties interested, in this locality.  The 'grub' is reported to be most superb and the work of gathering the stock is progressing rapidly.  They camped on Box Elder on last Saturday night; thence they expected to go to Twin Mountains, then to Ten Mile, Six Mile and return."

B.F. Graham did a cash claim in 1891 for  land in section 21, 6N 46W - south of the Barr land, very near the Yuma County line.

James M. Graham proved up 160 acres in Section 2, 1N 46W - just a little south of Eckley in 1896

September 1896 Fort Collins Courier "James M. Graham came to Loveland last week from Yuma, Colo.  He expects to remain during the winter and has located on the west side of town."

October 1898 "J.M. Graham of Loveland was in the city the fore part of the week, and while here sold 275 head of steers to South Omaha parties.  Mr. Graham is one of Yuma county's prosperous stockmen.  His ranch is located south of Eckley."

May 1899 the Pioneer said "Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Graham of Loveland were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. O.. Hamsher last Sunday."

"J.M. Graham of Loveland passed through Yuma Wednesday en route to his ranch at Eckley with 230 head of native cattle.  Mr. Graham has many friends in Yuma and put in an hour or two shaking hands and buying provisions."

In 1899 Yuma County court Harry Graham was a witness in an assault trial.

James M.,, born May 1856 in Iowa, is in Loveland in 1900.  Alice W., December 1860  Illinois, has Edith E. March 1880 in Nebraska, Harry F. Sept 1882 in Nevada, and James M. July 1897 in Colorado.

Clark was elected superintendent, Mrs. W.F. Elliott assistant, and Miss Edith Graham secretary and treasurer.  While this is not a very large community and the Sabbath school will not be very large, everybody around Eckley is interested and consider it a step ahead.  It is certainly commendable to give the children an opportunity to enjoy what their elders have had in times past, and we congratulate our friends at Eckley.  In response to a request by the people Rev. J. L. Cameron will preach for them on every other Sunday evening.  Announcements made later.  Everybody is invited to attend."

January 1, 1904 the Pioneer "Albert Turney of Loveland informs us that Harry Graham died last Thursday after a few days suffering with an attack of pneumonia."

Leland A. Sheldon was in Lowville, Lewis County, New York in 1880, 18, son of Cyrus and Amelia Sheldon

Fort Collins, November 20, 1884

It looks like his sister Mary A (May 1869) married Charles McWhorter (mentioned in Fort Collins newspaper articles), and they were living in Buckhorn, Larimer County, in 1900.  Mother Amelia Sheldon, 65, is living with them.   Mary's brother Ira Cyrus Sheldon, was living with them in 1910 Larimer County - Ira died in 1910 and is buried in Fort Collins.

Mary, widowed in 1940, is living with daughter Fanny Hasemeyer in 1940 Fort Worth, Texas.  She said she was living in Masonville, Larimer County, Colorado in 1935.

1901 L.A. Sheldon was named a Larimer County road supervisor.

Leland A. Sheldon made final proof on November 6, 1903 for land in Section 9, 6N 70W  with Masonville addresses of all four witnesses.  It appears to be the same land he claimed in 1891.

L.A. Sheldon 43 married Elizabeth J. Mackey 54  on October 17, 1905 in Loveland.  - the age is twenty years off, but it's sometimes hard to tell a '3' from a '5'.

"Mrs. E.J. Mackey and L.A. Sheldon were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Graham on Tuesday of last week by Rev. A.W. Jamieson."  - Fort Collins Weekly Courier.

January 3, 1906 "Leanna Sheldon and Jeanetta Mackey returned to Loveland today to be ready to enter upon the last half year's school work.  They are both doing excellent work in the Loveland schools and are enjoying it."  Masonville section of the Fort Collins Weekly Courier.

Sheldon and family." (the 1900 census has Emma J. Sheldon, born October 1848 in New York, living at Lowville.  Parents were Ira and Fanny Maria Sheldon.  FindAGrave has Ira as the brother of Cyrus, so Emma was visiting her nephew and niece)

1907 "Little Jeanetta Mackey went to Loveland to visit a few days with her grandmother Mrs. B.F. Graham."

July 31, 1907 "Miss Emma Sheldon departed yesterday for her home in Lowville, New York, after eight months spent in our vicinity.  She has made a great many warm friends here who were sorry to see her leave "

"Miss Sara Sheldon came up from Loveland Sunday and spent the day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Sheldon."

Sarah Irene Sheldon, 21, married Charles M. Jennings, 19, in Masonville on July 7, 1908.  The marriage was recorded in Boulder County.

In 1910 Charles, a journeyman barber,  and Sarah, 23, born in Colorado, are in Longmont, with eleven-month-old Jennette G. Jennings.   She said her father was born in New York, mother in Canada - so Leland was probably married in Canada.

In 1920 Fort Collins Charles, a barber, is 31, born in Kansas, a single boarder, a barber -

Their divorce was in Larimer County in 1921.

Jeannetta G. Jennings is in Bakersfield, California in 1930, boarding with the Nutter family, waitress in a cafe.  One tree has Jeanetta Gillian Jennings, born May 10, 1909, marrying Elmer Euratus Darling in 1938, having Shan Darling August 16, 1939 in Kern County.and dying December 2000 in Los Angeles.  In 1940 Pasadena Gordon Darling,37, Michigan and Gillian, 30, Colorado have newborn son Shan.  Shan was born August 18, 1939 in Kern County, mother's maiden name Jennings.

Gordon B Darling and Gillian Jennings divorced in San Diego September 1967

1904 the Masonville section mentions a Mrs. Monroe Graham and a Miss Edith Graham -

In 1920 Alice and son James M. Graham are living in Loveland.

James M. Graham married Mima J.Murphy March 14, 1926.   The 1927 Fort Collins directory has James and Mima - he's a bank teller. In 1930 he works at a bank in Fort Collins, and they have Shirley, 3.  Mima was born in Nebraska about 1895.  (Mima J. Murphy was in Hitchcock County, Nebraska in 1900, saying she was born September 1889.  She's the daughter of George H. and Cora A. Murphy.  In 1910 she's still living with parents in Hitchcock County, but now is Mimma J. Head, married to Archie F. Head, 23.  They must have divorced, because Archie F. Head, born about 1887, is in Hitchcock County in 1940, married to Leola, and they have Robert 18 and Jocelyn 14 )

In 1940 James is  the Fort Collins city treasurer, Mima is at home, and Shirley J. in 13.

Shirley's cousin Betty Stewart said in 2013 - "Shirley married a serviceman in the late 1940's - lived in Chicago -she and her parents are  buried in Loveland."

Loveland Burial Park - across the highway from Lakeside -  cemetery has a James Graham buried November 1950 -  but no Mima
