Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, June 21, 1956 ELLIS SERVICES HERE YESTERDAY Walter A. Ellis, a pioneer resident of the Holyoke community, passed away Monday at the Phillips County Hospital at the age of 83 years. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Holyoke Methodist church, with Rev. J. Wilson Branstetter in charge. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park. The Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A son of Emmons E. and Harriett Ellis, Walter A. Ellis was born December 2, 1872, in Lafayette County, Iowa. He came to Phillips County with his parents as a young man and was united in marriage to Emma Caroline Hagemann on February 20, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis homesteaded northwest of Holyoke for a time and later moved to another farm in the same area, residing there until their retirement. They were the parents of eight children, seven of whom survive. Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Ruby, Mrs. Morse Kistler. Survivors include five sons, Wallace and Earl Ellis, Denver, Lester Ellis, Colorado Springs, Melvin Ellis, Yuma and Forrest Ellis, Aurora; two daughters, Edna, Mrs. Joe Shaw, Denver, and Alta, Mrs. Clyde Stroup, Holyoke; two sisters; one brother, and a number of other relatives and friends. |
Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, December 29, 2005 Laura B. Ellis, age 89, died December 15, 2005 in Colorado Springs. Laura was born October 14, 1916 in Holyoke to Vern and Faith (Briggs) Shambaugh. She married Melvin Ellis in 1937 and they made their home in farm country near Holyoke. They moved to a farm north of Eckley in 1946 and raised their seven children until moving to Eckley in 1957. They moved to Salida in 1968, and relocated to Colorado Springs in 1978. Laura was a very happy and energetic person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her husband Melvin, one brother, two sisters, a son-in-law and a great grandson preceded her in death. Survivors include her brother, Lloyd Shambaugh; seven children, Stan and Carolyn Knapton, Alan and Alice Brown, Tom and Kathy Ellis, Max and Julie Ellis, Lila Jiron, Jerry and Sandy Ellis and Mervin Ellis; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Graveside services were held December 19, 2005 in Colorado Springs. |
