JOSIAH and MARY BRIGHAM

Josiah was born Feb 2, 1829 and died June 13, 1905 in Yuma - buried in the Armel cemetery.

Mary was born August 19, 1836 in Alabama and died July 18, 1934 in Yuma County - she's also in the Armel cemetery

Four daughters - Mary Etta 1862-1900, Carrie E. (Busby) 1867-1936, Anna Elmira 1869-1946, and Elsie (Browning) 1875-1964.

In 1880 Iowa County, Iowa Josiah and Mary have Willie L. 19,

In 1900 Josiah Feb 1829 in New York, and Mary V Aug 1836 Alabama, are in Lansing with Annie E. Dec 1869

Willie married Martha Isabelle Gilstrap on July 22, 1888, daughter of Jesse and Margaretta, and died in Denver in 1922.  

1909 "Mrs. Grace Collins of Olewein, Iowa, arrived in Armel last Saturday for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gilstrap."

Mrs. John Shumaker, of Spokane, Washington, is visiting her brother, Jacob Gilstrap, of Armel."

In 1900 Boulder W.L. is a farm laborer, born Feb 1881 in Iowa, with Martha Oct 1866 in Missouri, and they have Elza R Aug 1889, Cora E. Oct 1890, Lillie M. Sep 1893,Birt E. Dec 1895, and Mary A. Mar 1898 - all kids in Colorado.

Martha's stone in Pocatello Idaho, has "Martha Isabell Gilstrip Brigham - Oct 1866 Aug 1915" and the FindAGrave has

Elza Roy Brigham (1889 - 1943)* Roy's WWI registration in Salt Lake City said he was born August 155, 1889 in "Ray"  Colorado ,
Bert Elmer Brigham (1895 - 1949)*  Bert's WWI registration in Mesa County, Colorado said he was born in Wray December 16, 1896.

In 1920 Lexington Nebraska W. L. Brigham 59, is widowed "Teanning city streets"  With him are Ray 16, Belle 14, Arthur 9, Idaho and Fred 6. Idaho.

In 1930 Fred is living with brother Ray in Denver.

Stone in Denver Fairmount cemetery has "Brigham Waldo 1909 1922" -but that's probably son of Sylvester.

Annie proved up a quarter in 1899 - a mile from the Kansas border southeast of Beecher Island.

William M Barnes, of Jaqua, Kansas filed for final proof on a timber claim August 1898 for a quarter in 18, 4S 43W, with witnesses Lewis D. and Melvin H. Thompson of Jaqua, and William A. Turner and Wilber Welch, of Lansing, Colorado.

He had cash-claimed a quarter touching it in 1891.  John W. Remley had cash-claimed a quarter next to him in 1891, and a "Willie L." Brigham another , also in 1891.

In 1900 - next to Josiah and Mary Brigham and daughter Annie E., born Dec 1869 Iowa, William  born March 1857 Ohio and Mary Sept 1862 Ioa have Frederic J. October 1885 Nebraska, and  Orville C. Sept 1893 Colorado.

 

John W. Remley served in the 28th Iowa, and died April 9, 1896, and is buried in St. Francis, Kansas.  Susan 1843-1931 is also buried there.

In 1880 John Remley, 37, born in Alabama, was living in Johnson County, Kansas.  Susan, 37, Ohio, has Anna 13, Mary 11, and Clary 9. all three born in Iowa.

In 1900 Susan is in Washington County, Kansas, widowed, with Thomas and Clara Browning.

1909 Laird items "Mrs. Weed and mother, Mrs. Remley, visited the primary room Friday morning."

In 1910 Susan is widowed, living with daughter Mary B. and Henry M. Thompson in Lansing, Yuma County.

In 1920 she's in Jackson County, Kansas with daughter Clara E. and T.S. Browning and their three,  She's with them there in 1925 and 1930, too

 

December 1902 "Mr. William Barnes received word last week that his brother was dead."

1902 "Mr. William  Barnes is building a new stone barn."

1906 William Barnes was an election judge in Lansing Precinct.

William Matthew Barnes had two sons by a previous marriage when he came to Colorado. One son Orville C., born in 1893, died June 30, 1903 in Yuma County, Colorado. William married Anna Elmira Brigham in 1901 in Yuma County where she had homesteaded. Anna was born in Iowa in December 1, 1869 and died on July 19, 1946. They purchased a 20 acre fruit farm at the corner of South Shields and Prospect in Fort Collins. They named the farm "Pleasant View Fruit Farm". They sold the farm for $5, 000 and bought a 40 acre tract further west on Prospect. In 1918 they raised hay and livestock; and their daughter Helen continued high school in Ft. Collins while son Raymond attended the District #10 school. In 1922, they sold the 40 acre tract and bought an 10 acre tract in Bellvue and a farm on Stove Prairie Hill. Will's first orchard was wiped out in the flood of 1923 and his health failed and he died in 1925. Anna and Raymond moved to the Stove Prairie place and lived there for many years until they died.

1900 "Wm. Brigham will leave for Boulder about the middle of next week with his family.  The higher altitude is expected to benefit his health."

1911 Armel items "Mrs. Mary Brigham is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Jas. Busby and family, this week."   "Mrs. Mary Brigham and Jas. Busby and wife spent Sunday at H.M. Thompson's."

1913 "Mrs. Brigham, who lives at Fort Collins, arrived in Armel Thursday of last week for an extended visit with relatives."

1922 Armel items "Mrs. Mary Brigham celebrated her 86th birthday on Saturday, Aug. 12, and received hearty congratulations from her many friends in this community."

Helen Gertrude Barnes was the daughter of William M. and Anna E. Brigham Barnes. She attended Fort Collins schools and graduated from Cache La Poudre High School in 1923. She attended Colorado State Teacher's College and taught in several rural schools. On Dec. 15, 1926, she married Oliver Jasper Burgess; they spent their married life in Bellvue and in the mountains. She was a member of the Church of Christ, active in Grange, and wrote articles for local publication.

 

Fred Josiah Barnes was born at Dundy County, Nebraska 30 Oct 1885. He married Gertrude Godfrey . Gertrude Godfrey was born at Lead, South Dakota 26 Nov 1888 . They were the parents of 1 child: G. Barnes
Fred Josiah Barnes died 14 Jun 1974 at Ft. Collins, Colorado . Gertrude Godfrey died Aug 1980 at Ft. Collins, Colorado "Fred J. Barnes, superintendent North Poudre irrigation: Mercer ditch extension , son of W M"

In 1930 Larimer County, Fred J. is a civil engineer for the irrigation company, 44, with Gertrude 41, and daughter Gertrude 15.

Fred 1885-1974 and Gertrude M. 1888-1980 are buried in Fort Collins  # 48100020.
