In 1870 Bradford County, Pennsylvania, John Ballard is 45, Caroline 35, Edgar 14, Ida 12, Ella 10, Ruthie 6, and Lizzie 8.

In 1880 Franklin County, Nebraska, John Ballard is 55, born in Pennsylvania, farming, with Caroline 45 Pennsylvania. They have Ruth 16, a teacher, and Lizzie 12, both born in Pennsylvania. Edgar, 24, is listed as a hired man.

Edgar F. Ballard homesteaded a quarter in Franklin County in 1883, and timber-claimed 80 acres there in 1890.

John Ballard homesteaded a quarter in Franklin County in 1885.

John Ballard was leader of a group of the Franklin Methodist Church, and they met at the Ash Grove school house.

John L. Ballard - 1825-1888 is buried in Lansing Valley Cemetery, Yuma County # 11442964.

Edgar F. Ballard, born 1856 at Burlington, Pennsylvania, married Florence Holdredge July 3, 1883 at Webster, Nebraska.

In 1900 Edgar, a carpenter, and Florence are in Boulder County, Colorado. Florence was born August 1862 in Indiana, and has not had any children.

In 1910 Delta County, Colorado Edgar and Florence are farming. On the same page is Harlow B. Holdredge 77 and Sarah L. 68, and the Mark Holdredge 46 and Dovie 39 family with five kids. In 1930 Delta County, Florence is widowed, living with sister Bernice Pottorff and her husband G.D. Sarah Holdredge, 88, is also in the household.

In 1885 Franklin County, John is 60, Caroline 50, Lizza 17 a teacher and Lizzie a daughter, Edgar 28 and Florence 23.

Ella married Thompson Bodle, divorced him in Denver County in 1900, and died in 1925. Wonder if she's the Veda M. Bodle who was teaching in Denver in 1922, and claimed land in Morgan County in 1920 and 1922??

The tree said Veda (John L.'s daughter) was born 1883, and married Maxmilian Swackenberg. Veda had a probate case in Denver in 1957, and Max in 1961. Veda M. (Ballard) (Bodel/Bodle) Swackenbert 1860 is buried in Fairmount, Denver # 89959240, Max 1877-1961 with her.

Edward Morris (and a young daughter) were killed in an 1869 West Virginia flood, and his widow Sarah Ann Morris 1822-1891 is buried in Republic County, Kansas, per # 77182592.

Victoria's brother Milton also settled in Armel, and is buried there - # 68126853.


Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Armel Church with Rev Walter E.White Officiating for Milton Morris,highly respected pioneer resident of the Armel acaommunity,who came there in 1888 and had lived there since with the exception of about 6 years. Mr Morris was born in Fayette County,Virginia on Nov.15,1855 and Died on Oct.22,1944 at the home of his daughter in Guernsey,Wyoming where he and Mrs. Morris had gone two weeks ago to make their home. He had been in poor health for the past 3 months. When a boy of 14 he moved with his parents from Virginia to Belleville,Republic County,Kansas.There was when he married Charity Elizabeth Edwards Jan.5,1876.Twelve years later they came to Colorado and settled on a homestead near the present site of Armel and this has been their home except for 6 years spent at Haddam,Kansas.When he was a young man he was baptised into the Christian Church. Four children preceded him Jessie,Carl, Sadie Glasgow and Clara Chappel. His survivors include his wife and nine children Robert Morris of Lingle,Wyoming,Milton Morris of Lewiston,Idaho,Mrs Nora Miller of Long Beach,California,Mrs Ada Baker of Guernsey,Wyoming,Mrs.Mattie Mason of Coeurd'Alene,Idaho,Mrs.Ruby Spaeth of Guernsey,Wy.,Mrs.Gertrude Morris of Armel,Colorado,Mrs.Edna Cecil of Elizabeth,Colorado and Vernie Barnett of Denver,Colorado
Caroline Ballard and Lizzie H. Ballard both cash-claimed land in 1891, a mile south of Beecher Island. The Arickaree bordered theire claims on the north and west.

Louis cash-claimed a quarter in 6, 3S 42W in 1891.

John L. Salladay cash-claimed a quarter in 21, 3S 43W in 1890, and Lizzie proved up one in 21 in 1894.

J. Leonard Sallady married Lizzie H. Ballard Oct 12, 1892, recorded in Denver.

Nellie M. Sallady married Richard Humphrey April 3, 1908, recorded in Denver.

They must have left Yuma County before 1896, when Maud Jennie, born 1881, married Allison Lee Gumm in El Paso County.

Maud divorced him in 1905, and married a Mitchell. She's buried in Idaho # 70321141 - 1881-1946.

Effie, born 1883 in Nebraska, married William Gandy Nov 22, 1899, recorded in El Paso County, and is buried in Temple, Cotton County, Oklahoma 1883-1967, # 45593113.

In 1900 El Paso County, Colorado, Edward E. Salladay, born Sept 1853 in Mississippi, married 22 years to Victoria, July 1864 West Virginia, have had eight kids, all living. Myrtle N. Seo 1885 Nebraska, Florence Sept 1888 Kansas, Lee March 1890 Colorado, Loyd July 1892 Colorado, and Alva Sept 1896 Colorado.

In 1905 the Yuma County commissioners ordered a refund to Lizzie H. Salladay for taxes on land in 2 and 22, 2S 43.

Lizzie was delinquent in 1907 for taxes on land in 24, 3S 43W.

John Leonard Sallady, born 1860 in Chicot County, Arkansas, is the brother of Lounis. He married Lizzie Hollenbeck Ballard Salladay (1867-1953) and they were in Denver in 1900. John is a newspaperman, married eight years to Lizzie, and they have Claire born April 1898. On the same page is Caroline Ballard, born June 1845 in Pennsylvania. John is buried in Denver Fairmount 1860-1940, # 76695410.

Florence B. Sallady married Harrison L. Slocum March 23, 1910, recorded in El Paso County.

Pearl Salladay married Paul S. Broberg October 6, 1920, recorded in El Paso County.

H. Lloyd Salladay married Olive Allison July 9, 1928, recorded in El Paso County.

Lizzie H. Salladay had a case in Jefferson County, Colorado probate in October 1954.

Lewnis Edward Salladay 1852-1936 is buried in Colorado Springs #35148464.

In 1939, Victoria (wid Edward) is living in Tacoma, Washington- the only Salladay in the book.

FindaGrave # 69998824 has Victoria Ann (Morris) Salladay 1861-1948 buried in Tacoma, with a note "date of death on the store of 1953 is wrong".

Lee Raymond Salladay, born 1891 in Yuma County, served in the Army 1917-1919 - a horseshoer, was a dairymnan and farmer, lived in Ellicott, Colorado for many years, married Ebalena Johnson 1925 in Colorado Springs.died 1982 in Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs - May 2014 -Charles Edward Salladay was born on March 13, 1928 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Lee Raymond and Lena Johnson Salladay. Charlie's grandparents homesteaded in the Ellicott area in 1898 where Charlie resided until his passing. Charlie was a farmer and a dairyman from a very young age until failing health caused him to retire in 1985. During his lifetime he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, motorcycling, square dancing, and other activities involving family and a multitude of friends. On March 20, 1950 he married his loving wife, June, of 64 years. Together they raised four children: Gordon (Debbie) Salladay, Brian (Rose) Salladay, Christy (Lloyd) Malone, Sandy (Mike) Salladay-Higgins, and one daughter/granddaughter, Karen Higgins, who came to live with them before the age of 2. Together they have five grandchildren: Tracy Wilcox, Aaron Salladay, Sharra Miller, Clem and Elizabeth Malone, and 10 great grandchildren. He is also, survived by his sister, Inezbelle Williams; and two sister-in-laws, Dorothy Brownewell, and Gayle Cropp. Charlie was active in the community. He served on the Ellicott School Board for 12 years and he was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. Charlie was on the original Board of Directors for the Board of Cooperative Services, the Board of Directors for the Ellicott Fire Protection District for eight years, and was on the Volunteer Fire Department for over 34 years. His associates on the Fire Department would not let him retire because he was the only engineer they had.
