Belle B. Carkhuff, born about 1864, died January 2, 1938 in Santa Barbara County, California. In 1930 she was in Solano County, widowed, and brother Fred Belden was living with her.

Edward Shafer cash-claimed 130 acres in sections 20 and 29, 8N 42W in 1891. That's in Phillips County, about twenty miles north of Zanette's claim.

J. R. INNESS,
manufacturer of and dealer in mineral waters, ginger ale
and soda water, and bottler of lager beer, is carrying
on business at No. 532 South Cherry Street, Galesburg,
IL. He began this industry in 1879, at the corner of
West and Second streets, where his establishment was
destroyed by fire in 1881. His annual product at this
writing (1886) is about 3,600 cases of beer, about 3,000
cases of soda water, and ginger ale in still greater
quantities. Mr. Inness is a native of England, being born at Newcastle, Jan. 16, 1849, and was brought by his parents, George and Ruth (Elliott) Inness, to America in 1850. The family lived at Abingdon up to 1866, and there the subject of this sketch attended the common schools and assisted his father at his business. He went into farming for himself when 21 years of age and followed it for about nine years. In March 1871, Mr. Inness was married in Galesburg Township to Miss Emma Belden, who lived thereafter only about three years and left one child, a daughter, Isabelle. The present Mrs. Inness, to whom Mr. Inness was married in Galesburg Township on Jan. 31, 1877, was Mrs. Jennie (Van Riper) Elliott.

Shafer born January 1863 in Nebraska (conflicts with the 1880 and 1885 census birth places) , has been married eleven years to "Zennette" born Nov 1859 in Illinois. She's had three children, all living - Hoyt born Nov 1891 , Orville Nov 1893, and Mamie April 1897, all three born in Colorado.
In 1910 Hoyt and Orval "Sholt" are nephews of Eholse M. Littlefield, 53, in Decatur, Alabama, with her son Freddie, 28, born in Nebraska.
| In 1910 Mamie is a ward of Norman W. Carkhuff and Belle in Rochester, New
York, and on Jun 10, 1918 she married Louis R. Matteo in Chicago. They're in the 1919 Dallas directory, living at 703 Adair, with Robert a student, and Mamie a waitress at the Adolphus (the grandest hotel in Dallas). In 1920 they live at 3416 Junius, and she's a clerk at T & P - probably Texas and Pacific Railroad. The 1920 census has her as a bill poster at a retail dry goods store. Robert Louis Matteo, M.D., is one of the representative physicians and surgeons of the younger generation in the city of Muskegon, and he has a specially large practice among the leading Italian families of the city and county. The doctor was born at Molinara in the vicinity of the fair old city of Naples, Italy, on the eighteen of April 1894, and is one of the four surviving children of Joseph and Pasqualina Matteo , the other three survivors in the family of eight children being Mrs. Mary Mezzetti , Andrew and Genevieve. The family came to the United States in 1910, when Dr. Matteo of his review was a lad of six years and the home was first established on the upper peninsula of the state of Michigan, whence, a few years later removal was made to Muskegon. In the public schools of Muskegon, Dr. Matteo continued his studies until his graduation in the high school in 1915. Thereafter he went to the state of Texas and in the medical department of Baylor University, one of the leading education institutions of the Lone Star state, he was graduated as a member of the class of 1920 and with the well earned degree of Doctor of Medicine. He soon afterwards returned to Michigan and established himself in general practice in Muskegon, where his success has been distinctive and on a parity with his professional skill and personal popularity. He takes great interest in advancing the youthful members of the Italian families in the community, and through his efforts several local Italian boys have been enabled to attend college. The doctor is affiliated with the Phi Chi medical fraternity at his alma mater, Baylor University, Dallas, Texas, and is a popular member of the Muskegon County Medical Society, besides having membership in the Michigan State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He continues a close student and thus keeps in close touch with the advances made in medical and surgical science. His political allegiance is given to the Democratic Party. On the sixth of June, 1918, was solemnized the marriage of Dr. Matteo to Miss Mamie Bell Shafer, of Paonia, Colorado, she being a representative of ancestry identified with colonial New England history. Dr. and Mrs. Matteo are popular in the social circles of Muskegon. They have no children. February 25, 1923 Marylin Louise Matteo, died, born to Robert Louis Matteo and Mamie Shafer in Muskegon, Michigan January 16, 1923. Mamie Matteo is listed in the Michigan DAR as descendant of William BELDING, and notes are ,"Calif., 1927." Robert Louis Matteo is a surgeon in 1930 Sonoma County, California, born in Italy, divorced, and his widowed mother "Joseph" 62 is living with him. In 1940 Robert is married to Isabelle, and his September 20, 1956 obituary says "beloved husband of of Mary E. Matteo, loving son of Mrs. Joseph Matteo, loving brother of Mrs. Z. Mezzetti of San Jose, Mrs. A.J. LePore of Oakland and Andrew Matteo of Muskegon, Michigan. A native of Molinara, Italy." Ora K. Fairbanks married Mary Shafer Matteo in Denver August 29, 1934. Roberta Kathleen Fairbanks was born Nov 13, 1937 in Santa Barbara County, mother's maiden name Shafer. In 1940 Santa Barbara County, Ora K. Fairbanks, 54, born in Michigan, and Mary, 43, born in Colorado have Kathleen 2, born in California. Ora manages a garage, Mary a nursing home. In 1941 Santa Barbara Ora and Mary live at 2434 Fletcher Avenue, and he's an auto repairman and "OK Parcel Delivery." Mrs. Winifred F. Fairbanks is a telephone operator - probably his second wife, at 418 Ruth Avenue. In 1946 Bakersfield, Ora K. and Mary live at 320 E. May 19, 1967 WILLIAMSBURG Michigan-- Ora K. Fairbanks, 81, a
former Williamsburg resident, died Wednesday at Los Angeles, Calif.,

San Francisco Chronicle August 28, 1911 "ELOPERS FROM NAPA ARE MARRIED AT VALLEJO Special Dispatch to The Chronicle VALLEJO Dan Cupid again laughed at locks, locksmiths, irate parents and the proprieties last night when Fred Belden of Grizzley Island and Miss Jessie M Greenlee daughter of a prominent hardware dealer of Napa were married in this city. The groom had secured the necessary license early in the day but the parents of the bride were suspicious and she was unable to leave her home When everyone however had retired shortly after 10 o'clock she left her room and met her lover - who brought her down to this city in an automobile and aroused Justice of the Peace Fitsgerald from his slumber to tie the knot."

John David Greenlee, per # 125231855, is buried in Napa County, 1869-1908. Jessie was widowed in 1910 Solano County, born in California, with Irene M. 16, Milton E. 13, Walter E. 11, and Jesse W. 2. Milton is probably buried in Golden Gate # 46217584 - 1897-1959.Walter Eugene Greenlee -June 12, 1899- Dec 21, 1941 - died in Alameda County. In 1940 Irene M. Fisher, 44, and Rudolph 56 are living in Solano County, with Marie B. 18. Irene Marie Greenlee and Rudolph Fisher's daughter Marie Bethel Fisher married James Thomas Lear in 1944 in Solano County. Irene M. Fisher, born April 23, 1895, died in Solano County March 30, 1962, and is buried in Golden Gate.)

Fred may have moved to California because of his brother Frank E., Born about 1850 in New York, a blacksmith in Tulare County California in 1880, married to Mary A. (Balch) 27, with James E. 6, Marvin E. 5, Sylvia E.2, and brother Clark 23, born in Illinois, farming. Sylvia was the one living with Fred in 1910.
One tree had Frank E. Belden marrying Mary Adelaide Balch, daughter of Samuel
and Mary Ann Balch,. She was born 1852 in New Hampshire, dying Oct 21,
1894 in San Diego, so that might be why Sylvia was with Fred. Hollister,

The sad intelligence was conveyed by a telegram last Monday of the sudden death
at San Diego of Mrs. Adelaide BELDEN, sister of Mrs. M.C. SERIES. The remains
were brought up here for interment in the IOOF cemetery. (San Benito
County)
