James C.  and Susan (Giggey) Nickel, Witherbee

In 1880 Audubon County, Iowa James C. Nickel is 22, born in Pennsylvania, with parents John and Mena.

James C. Nickel married "Rebeca" Darland Feb 20, 1883 in Audubon County, Iowa.

In 1885 Audubon County Iowa, James Nickel 26 and Rebecca ?? 21 have Isaac, 1.

Rebecca Darland in 1880 is in Powieshek County Iowa, 17, daughter of Isaac and Eliza Darland.

One tree said James Cromley Nickel married Rebecca Agnes Darland Feb 20, 1893.

In 1895 Mills County, Iowa James 37, Rebecca 35, Isaac W. 12, Ernest W. 10, Jesse L. 8, Edgar 3, and newborn Harvey.

In 1895 Harrison County, Iowa Geo. Giggey and Elizabeth are both 52, Susan 17.

In Mills County Iowa, Eliza Gertrude "Nichels" was born to James Crumb Nichels and Rebecca Agnes Darland July 22, 1897.

In 1900  Mills County, Iowa James C. Nickel born March 1848, 42 ???, has been married 17 years to Rebekah, June 1862 Iowa.  They have Ernest Nov 1885,  son Jesse Y, Jan 1888, Edgar C Mar 1893, Harry E May 1894, and Gertrude C. July 1897 - all born in Iowa.

J.C. Nickel married Susan Linderman Jun 24, 1905 in Mills County.  His father was John Nickel, mother Luewees Iwatvagar (sic).  Her parents were George Giggy and Elizabeth Parker.

In 1910 Yuma County James C. 53, is married six years to Susan 32, born in Maine, and only Gertrude is with them.

James proved up two quarters in 20 and 29, 5N 42W - right on the Nebraska line - in 1916.

He and Susan V. are in Yuma County in 1920, with Harvey E., 25.

James and Susan are  in Council Bluffs Iowa in 1925, and Susan said her father was Samuel Giggey, mother Elizabeth Parker. (a Susan Ann Giggey married Walter Linderman Jun 27, 1897 in Monona County, Iowa, and Susan Giggey was in Harrison County Iowa in 1895, age 17, with Geo. and Elizabeth Giggey. A George Giggey - March 6, 1838 - Aug 28, 1908 - might be 1903 ? - is buried in Little Sioux Cemetery, Harrison County, and Elizabeth Giggey filed in 1903 for a widow's pension for George.  It was paid until her death Oct 13, 1918)

In 1930 they're in Council Bluffs, Iowa

The tombstone in Audubon County says "NICKEL, REBECCA A" - 1883 - 1902"   WPA records say "Blk 17 Lot 1 w/o James"

The Isaac William Nickel, registering in Guthrie, Iowa, said he was born Nov 19, 1884 and nearest relative was Della Cenia Nickel of Guthie.

Final Rites Held For Mrs. Nickel, 63, Of Guthrie County • Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Guthrie Center Monday for Mrs. Isaac Nickel,  of Guthrie Center, who died of cancer Friday evening at her home there. The Rev. Gordon Zimmerman of Audubon officiated, assisted by the Rev. Milton Wilkenson of Guthrie Center. Burial was in Union cemetery, Guthrie county. Delia, daughter of George U. and Cenn Williams, was born in Rushville, Neb., Oct. 5. 1887. As a small child she came to Iowa in a covered wagon with her parents church when she was a girl. In HKJ9 she transferred her membership to the Lone Star Presbyterian church, located on the western edge of Guthrie county. Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Clifford and Oliver, Guthrie Center, and Carl, Seattle, Wash., and five daughters, Mrs. Clarence Taggart (Lilly), Mrs. Hazel Brady and Mrs. Arlene Brady, Guthrie Center; Mrs. Emmerl Jensen (Edith), Audubon, and Juanita Armstead of Panora; (our brothers, three sisters and 17 grandchildren. One son and daughter preceded her in death. Kenneth gave his life in the service of his country in World war II. who located at Glen wood. In 06 the family moved to Qniney, Wash,   On Jan. 20, 1907, she married, Beatrice. Neb., were week-end Isaac Nickel at Quiecy. They returned to Iowa and lived for many years in Union township, Guthrie.

May 24, 1945 Kenneth Nickel, nephew of S. J. Williams of Ritzville, was killed in
action April 18 near Leipeg, Germany, according to word received this week.
He was a tank gunner and had been overseas two years. He was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Isaac Nickel of Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Juanita Romines, 61, Nevada, Missouri, died June 30, 1991.  Born Jan 10, 1930, in Guthrie County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Isaac Nickel and Della (Williams) Nickel.

 

In 1905 Mills County, Iowa he's 21, saying he was born in Iowa, his father in Pennsylvania.

In 1930 he said his father was born in Ohio.  He and Della have Lillie G. 21, Clifford E. 19, Carl E 17, Hazel M. 14, Edith G. 12, Arline M. 10, Kenneth W. 7, and Oliver U. 3.

Harvey Ellwood Nickel, with an address of Holyoke, was called for service to be entrained August 5, 1918 for Fort Logan.

Harvey was single in 1930 Yuma County, farming north of Wray. 

Harvey E. Nickel married Ruth Irvine October 16, 1937, and divorced her in Yuma County in 1939.  He's single in 1940 Yuma County.

He's buried in Wray. "Colorado Pvt Sup Co 6 Infantry WWI - May 24, 1895 - Nov 28, 1969"

 

Jess Leroy Nickel registered in Oakland, Nebraska, saying he was born January 5, 1887 in Audubon Iowa, and was single.

In 1930 he's working on the farm of Emma Primm in Pottawatomie County, Iowa, and in 1940 Pottawattamie on Theodore D. Sieck's place.

Jesse died Oct 20, 1951 and is buried in Hazel Dell Township cemetery, Council Bluffs.

Ernest Wesslay Nickel, per one tree, was born Nov 20, 1885 in Audubon, Iowa,   He was in Douglas County, Washington in 1910, working on the farm of Joseph Brown.

In 1920 Washington he's married to Lela A. 28, and they have Alferd L. 5.

In 1930 E.W. is in Grant County Washington, with Alfred 15 and Robert 8.  "Lola" is an inmate at teh Eastern Washington Hospital in 1930 and 1940.

Ernest 1884-1976 is in Valley View Memorial Park, Grant County.

Lela A. Nickel  1891-Aug 4, 1978 - died in Spokane City, with a residence of Ephrata.

When he registered for WWII , he said Isaac Nickel of McGuthrie Center, Iowa would always know his address.

Gertrude E. Nickel married James Edwin McFarland September 29, 1915 in Holyoke - witness Bessie McFarland.

In 1920 they're in Chase County, Nebraska with May R. 2 and Edith V. 1.

1923 "Strayed - two cows, branded with a J.E. combination brand on right side.  Parties having information of the whereabouts of these cows, leave word at Rattler office or notify J.E. McFarland, Lamont, Neb."
 

 In 1930 they're in Dundy County Nebraska, with R. May 13 and V. Edith 11.

James E. 1883 -1963 and Gertrude E. 1897  -1980 McFarland are buried in Wray, and her brother Harvey ins in the same family plot. (probably the Edith V. Boyd 1918-1998 and Donald J. Boyd are theirs)

Gertrude Eliza (Nickel) McFarland

Funeral services for Gertrude E. McFarland were held Tues., April 22 at the Wray United Methodist Church. Rev. Morris Coggin officiated. Interment was in Grandview Cemetery.

Gertrude Eliza Nickel, child of James Nickel and Rebecca Darland, was born at Red Oak, Iowa and departed this life at Wray, CO April 19, 1980 at the age of 82 years, 8 months, and 27 days.

She moved from Iowa at age 11 years to Delta, CO, a year later moved with the family to Holyoke, CO.

On Sept 29, 1915 she was married to James E. McFarland. To this union were born two daughters, May of San Juan Capistrano, CA and Edith of Wray, CO.

Gertrude was the only daughter and youngest of eight children. Her brothers have all preceded her in death.

Gertrude and Ed lived on a cattle ranch north of Haigler retiring from ranching in 1949 to live in Laird, CO. She moved to Wray in 1979.

She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters, May and Edith, two sons-in-law, six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Aaron Sweet married Ellen Giggey August 31, 1887 in Harrison County Iowa (and their son married Sylvia Estella Hoschouer, daughter of Stephen Albert Hoschouer)
