In 1870 Saunders County Nebraska William and Sarah have Charlie 2 and Willie ten months.
"One hundred sixty acres plus eighty acres of timberland was our farm, 10
miles west of Freeport, Yellow Creek, Illinois. Missouri home was three
eighties, 80 acres of timber. Moved to Nebraska with three covered wagons. Ed
and his family in one wagon; Father, Mother and I (Josie) in
the third wagon.
I was six years old. Thomas, 11 years old, rode a two year old colt, named Ned.
Rosa, 8 1/2 years old, rode a two year old colt, named Pete. They drove six head
of milch cows behind our covered wagons from Missouri to Nebraska; crossed the
Missouri river on Ferry-boat at Nebraska City; then came to Ashland and on seven
miles northwest to my sister's home (Sarah Wood) where they had homesteaded.
Their names were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Wood (Will). Their land was one and
two-thirds miles North and East of Memphis. Mr. Wood saw our three covered
wagons coming across the prairie so he got on one of his horses and rode about a
mile to meet us. And were we all tired and glad to get to my sister Sarah's
home."
In 1880 Saunders County, Nebraska William R. 36, Pennsylvania and Sarah J. 33, Illinois, Wood have Charles 12, William J. 10, Lester A. 8, John C. 4, Harry 2, and Henry eight months.
In 1885 Clay County, Nebraska William R. is 40, Sarah J. 37. They have Willie 15, Lester 13, John 10, Henry 6m, and Josie ten months.
In 1900 Decatur County Kansas, William P. 55 and Sarah J. 52 have Lester A. June 1872, Henry Aug 1879 Jossie L. July 1884, Jessie Sept 1887, all kids born in Nebraska.
In 1910 Decatur County William and Sarah are alone, but following them is Willi, 40, born in Illinois, married ten years to Sara, 37, also Illinois They have Roy 9 and Vina, 3, both born in Kansas.
William R. Wood September 10, 1844 - Feb 12, 1924 and Sarah J. Wood - April 1, 1848- Feb 9, 1927 are buried in Eckley.
February 14, 1924 Pioneer "The funeral of the late William R. Woods will be held at the Eckley church this afternoon under the direction of the Eckley Post of the American Legion. He was one of the few remaining ex-soldiers in Yuma County who took part in the Civil War."
February 10, 1927 "Mrs. Sarah J. Wood died at the home of her son in Eckley, Wednesday February 8, 1927, aged 78 years, 10 months and one day. Funeral services will be held at the home in Eckley Friday afternoon. The deceased had been blind for a number of years and had been cared for by her sons. Sarah Jane Owen married William R. Wood March 13, 1867 at Lanark, Illinois. Following this event eight children were born, six of whom are living - W. J. and Jno. of Hartman, Colo., Lester of Eckley, Henry of Greeley, Mrs. Fred Whelan of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jesse of Eckley and two children who preceded them in death, Charley and Harry. Following a residence in both Nebraska and Kansas, they came to Eckley in 1917, which has since been their home. "

(There's a John Wilcoxen in 1910 Decatur County, 61, Virginia, and "nilla" 52, Illinois - likely parents of Etta)
In 1910 Yuma County John and Etta are 34, Orvil 14, Harley 12, Elsie 10, Leola 8, and Ellery 6.
In 1920 Prowers County John and Etta have Harley 20, Ellery 15, Nora 4, and a school-teacher boarder, Myra Cagle, 20. Harley registered with a Towner address (Kiowa County) with John as his nearest relative, so they must have been in northern Prowers County.
In 1930 they're up in Goodland, Kansas. John is a farm laborer, and they have Nora 14
Harley has married Lamyra, and is a steelworker building bridges in Fort Collins Colorado. He died in California Feb 22, 1984.
In 1940 John and Henryetta are in Monrovia (same city as brother Lester and Jesse)
In 1940 Monrovia Orvie is 42, a farm worker, married to Jesse 38, and they have Cleo 20, Della 14, Marrel 13, and Dick 7.
John Franklin Wood -August 20, 1875 - February 7, 1946 and Henretta Willcoxen Wood - September 14, 1874-May 16, 1957 - are buried in Artesia Cemetery, Los Angeles County.

In 1910 Lincoln County, Nebraska Henry is 30, Temperance O. 29, and they have Sheldon R. 5 and Roger 2.
Henry Robert Wood registered with an Eckley address saying he was born August 4, 1878, and nearest relative was Ordine.
1916 "Henry Wood has commenced work on a building to be constructed of cement and which will be twenty-four by seventy feet"
1916 Eckley "Mrs. Henry Wood banqueted the Larkin ladies last Thursday. The following ladies were present : Mesdames Johnson Knight, R.A. Polter, Chas Bowen, O.W. Nash, H.B. Spratt, and Fred B. Draper. Some of their ladies took their husbands with them. Ye scribe happened to be one of these lucky husbands."
1917 Eckley - "H.R. Wood is to take Chet McCafferty's place as substitute mail carrier for the rural route."
In 1920 Eckley precinct Henry is 41, Ordine 39, Sheldon 14, Roger 12, Mary L. 3, and Margery 1.
Sheldon Robert Wood married Rosella Louise Johnson Dec 25, 1924.
Henry is doing odd jobs in 1930 Cheyenne, and he and Orline are both 50. They have Sheldon, 24, Roger 22, both married. Mary 13, Margery 11, Rosella daughter-in-law 24, Colorado, granddaughters Myrtle 5, Colordo and Edith five months, Wyoming.
In 1940 Cheyenne they just have Marjerie, 22
Henry Robert Wood died Jan 20, 1965 and is buried in Cheyenne. 29162623, as is Temperence Orline Wood 29162630

WILBER
In 1910 Yuma County, on the same census page, Wilbur E. Wood 27 and wife Jessie M. 23, both born in Nebraska, in a separate house is Lester A. Wood, 37, Nebraska, single, and another house is Jesse Wood, 23, Nebraska.
Wilber E. Wood proved up on 320 acres in 20 and 21, 1S 47W in 1915 - only a few miles east of Jesse and Lester.
Wilber Edgar Wood registered in Yuma County, said he was born October 5, 1883 ? 1882?
Wilber still owned that land in 1922 - the only one of the brothers with Yuma County land.
Wilber is a railroad mechanic in 1930 La Junta, Colorado, and they have Leta A. 17 and Howard E. 16.
Wilber E. Wood born Oct 5, 1882 died August 4, 1961 in Los Angeles, mother's maiden name Morgan.
| THE BENKELMAN POST, Benkelman, Nebraska Thursday, August 10, 1961 --------- The Post learned of the death of Wilber Edgar Wood, 78, at his home in Bell, California, last week. Mr. Wood passed away quite suddenly at 5:30 o'clock, August 4th. He had been in ill health for the last two years and confined to his home for the past few months. He had been under the care of trained men nurses at the Kaiser Foundation hospital for some time. Funeral services were held at the J. G. Allen Mortuary Chapel, with J. G. Allen officiating, on Monday, August 7th, with interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Bell, California. Mr. Wood grew to manhood in Dundy county and in the later years of his life made annual visits here to visit with relatives and friends. He accompanied his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Wood from Syracuse, Nebraska, to Dundy county in 1892. They located 25 miles north of Benkelman, where he grew to manhood at Hiawatha. He moved to Yuma county, Colorado, where he homesteaded, later living in LaJunta, Colorado, before making California his home. He is the last of the immediate J. B. Wood family. He is survived by his two children, Howard Wood of Pueblo, Colorado, and a daughter, Leta Youngblood of San Jose, California, and three step-sons. We are in receipt of a part of the above information thru the courtesy of Mr. Wood's niece, Hazel Wood of Paramount, California
Jesse Cain Wood, Wilbur Edgar Wood Howard Edgar Wood, Leta Alice Wood Howard E. Wood, 88, passed away Nov. 11, 2001. Survived by his wife, Iris W.(nee: Dinwiddle) Wood of the family home, Pueblo, Colorado; daughter, Peggy Ard of Pueblo; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Wilber E. and Jessie M. Wood; and twin children, Dian Jo(Wood) Martin and Donald Howard Wood. Howard was a devoted family man and avid sports fan. He retired from the C&W Railway Company where he worked as road master, and was a member of Park Hill Baptist Church. At his request, there will be no viewing. Cremation, Montgomery & Steward Crematorium. Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Montgomery & Steward Chapel with Rev. Lonnie James officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association Parent Project through the funeral home. |

1908 Yuma "Jesse Woods is expected here any day now with his car of goods."
1912 Yuma Pioneer 
January 1913 "Jesse Wood left Tuesday for Oberlin, Kansas, where he will spend the remainder of the winter with his parents."
Jesse proved up 320 acres in 2, 3, and 11 of 1S 48 W, in 1913, witnesses William R. Farmer, Ray Scheler, Josiah Clines, and John J. Little, all of Yuma.
Lester won the half-mile dash at the 1911 Mid-Summer celebration in Yuma, and he placed second in one horse race.
Lester proved up two quarters in 11, 1S 48W in 1913.
In 1930 Lester and Jesse are farming near Eckley, with a boarder Cleo Wheeland, 22, a railroad mechanic. That's probably their nephew.
In 1940 Lester and Jesse are still together, out in Los Angeles. Lester doesn't have an occupation, but Jesse is a farm laborer.

In 1910 Decatur County Kansas, Fred Wheland is 30, Ohio, Josie 26, Nebraska. They have Leonard, 2 and Cleo ten months, both Kansas.
In 1913 Fred Wheeland of Decatur visited his sister Mrs. G.W. Elgin in Yuma. They must be from Frederick (Feb 17, 1837 Chillicothe Ohio - died Apr 28, 1905 in Edgar, Nebraska) and Mary Jane (James) Wheeland born Oct 14, 1844 in Chillicothe, died Nov 20, 1915 in Edgar.
Mary Elizabeth Wheeland born April 10, 1867 in Chllicothe married George W. Elgin March 12, 1888 in Nuckolls County, Nebraska. They're in Logan County Kansas in 1910, where George is running a grocery store- son Ray S. 19 and Mary B. 7.
They're in Yuma in 1912, when "G.W. Elgin and W.S. Fritts shipped in a couple of car loads of stock hogs from Nebraska last week."
"Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Fritts and son and Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Brown were guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Elgin for Christmas dinner."
and 1913, where Mary Belle had perfect attendance and deportment in the elementary school, and 1914 "G. W. Elgin returned Saturday morning from a business trip to various points in Kansas."

George W. Wheeland, in north Yuma in 1920, must have been the one who bought William Wood's 80 acres east of Eckley. He was with mother Mary J. in 1910 Clay County, 44, single. Todd Wheeland, 31 is also with him.
George is still in Yuma County in 1930, still single, still farming. He's in the 1934 directory - section 20, 2N 45W
George Elgin and Mary are in San Diego in 1920, no occupation. Mary, born April 10, 1866 in Illinois, died April 10, 1949 in Los Angeles. Mother's maiden name James, father Wheeland.
1915 "Reward of $5.00 will be paid for return of a Royal Roadster bicycle, green frame, taken from in front of Cole's store Monday - Roy Elgin, Yuma."
Ray Lemuel Elgin registered in Yuma, saying he was born 9-13-1891 in Russell Springs, Kansas, and was a bookkeeper at the Farmers State Bank.
Ray Elgin is in Yuma in 1920, rooming with the Oscar Clark family, a bank teller. He moved to California, then divorced,
They're in Decatur County in 1915, Fred 35, J.L. 30, Cleo 8, Lenard 5, Vernie 3, and Leah 2.
1918 Fred Wheeland was paid $60 by Yuma county for labor on road.
Frederick Wallace Wheland registered with an Eckley address, saying he was born March 30, 1891 ?, and his nearest relative was Josie L Wheeland of Eckley.
F.W. Wheeland is running a meat market in Eckley in 1922, coming to Yuma County in 1916. In the directory it says he was born in Ohio in 1881, married Josie L. Wood, four children.
I haven't found them in the 1920 census - or William and Sarah Wood,
The 1925 Eckley phone book has a listing for "Meat Market" - so Fred could have been there beyond 1922 when Frederick was born.
Fred W. a railroad watchman, and Josie L. are in Cheyenne Wyoming in 1930, Leonard L. 20, is a cook, Vernon 17, Leah L. 16, Frederick W. 8 born in Colorado, and daughter Merle M. 5 Wyoming.
Fred W. is also in the 1930 Hastings Nebraska directory, a meat cutter. He and Josie live at 513 N. St. Joseph Avenue.
Cleo was ten months old in 1910 Decatur, Kansas. Cleo Wheeland married Kathryn Culley January 30, 1939. Cleo is a music teacher in 1940 Cheyenne, Wyoming, where most of the Wheelands are buried.
Leonard Wheeland married Ida Harder June 18, 1927.
Fred died Nov 10, 1943, age 63 per the Cheyenne 1945 city directory 29162475 Josie 29162476 was living at 2023 Pioneer Avenue. She died January 11, 1957.
Fred is a band teacher at a Wyoming high school in 1936.
Frederic W. Wheeland, born Mar 15, 1922, died Oct 19,1977 in Orange County, California.

In 1900 Decatur County, Kansas William J. Woods, born Oct 1870 in Illinois, is married to Sarah S. Sept 1872 also Illinois.
In 1910 Decatur County Wille is 40, Sarah 37, Roy 9, and Vina 3. (following William R on the census page_
William made a cash claim in 1915 for 80 acres in 28, 2N 46W, and then proved up two quarters in 29, 2N 46W in 1916. The railroad went right through his cash claim, about two miles west of Eckley. In 1920 that 80 acres was owned by Geo Wheeland, and William has sold the two quarters to Andreas Herman, who also owned the full section 20 north of them.
IN 1920 ECKLEY THERE SHOULD BE WILLIAM J WOOD, WILLIAM R WOOD, and the WHEELAND - three families. BUT THEY ARE NOT IN THE CENSUS.
In 1930 they're in Hoyt, Morgan County - William 60, Sarah 57, with Roy, 29 a partner, and Vena 23 no occupation.
In 1940 Wiggins, Morgan County, Ray is 39, farming. and parents William and Sarah are living with them.
Vena married Roscoe J. Dean Feb 8, 1935, and they're turkey farming in 1940 Wiggins, with Dorothy, 4.
William J. Wood -1869-1949 buried in Fort Morgan 62985126 - with Sarah S. Wood 1872-1961.
Vena Bell Dean died in Wiggins - notice in Rocky Mountain News May 2, 2001. She's buried with Roscoe in Fort Morgan.
Roy J. Wood - Nov 30, 1900 - Sep 3, 1970 is buried in Fort Morgan.

He might be the William Reed Wood who did a cash claim for a quarter in 26, 2N 48W in 1890 - although that's twenty years before his sons came....
1916 Eckley "Wm. Wood had the misfortune to fall from a barn loft this evening and fracture a rib. He also sustained several other bruises. While waiting on Mr. Wood, Dr. Hoschauer received a phone all to L.R. McColloum's at once as Mr. McColloum was taken suddenly ill."
