Henry and Catherine Dorothea "Dora" Thompson, Jens Thompson, Steffens

Henry Thompson was born September 20, 1862 at Schleswig, Denmark to Hans and Christina Peterson Thompson.  Henry (Hy) went to western Iowa where he met Catherine Dorothea Russ, born November 1863 at Tondera Denmark, daughter of Peter and Marie Holtz.  They married August 22, 1889 at Attunra, Iowa.

The above is from the West Yuma history.  Iowa records have a Henry Thompson, father Peter Thompson, mother Christine Petersen, marrying Dorothea Russ, daughter of Peter Russ and Maria Holst, Aug 22, 1889 at Harlan, Shelby County, Iowa.

Infant daughter died in 1890 at birth.  Ernest born 1896 died 1898. 

In 1900 Cuming County, Nebraska, Henry 37 and Dorothea 36, both born in Germany, have Christina 8, Maggie 7, Emma 2, and eight-month Annie.

They moved to Trenton Nebraska in 1905.

In 1910 Yuma County Henry 47 and Dora 67, married 21 years, both born in Germany have Christine 19, Margaret 16, Emma 12, Annie 10, and Rose 6, all born in Nebraska.

Christina married Barthley Haffey in 1912.   Margaretha died during the flu epidemic of 1914.  Emma married Jerome L. McClung in 1916.  Jerome (Lew) died June 16, 1920 in a mule-team accident.  Kenneth was three, and she had a child on the way.  Louis Henry McClung was born July 28, 1920.  Kenneth died of pnemonia in 1928.

Henry claimed two quarters in 23, 1S 48W in 1914, and Jens two quarters in 23, also in 1914.  Jens' witnesses were Jesse G. Snyder, Allen H. Names, Henry Thompson, and William Wilson, all of Yuma.

There's a Jens Thompson, 20, born in Denmark, in 1910  a patient at Mercy Institute in west Brush, Colorado.

January 1914 "Miss Margaret Thompson, of south of town, left Tuesday for Oxford, Nebr., for a visit with her sister."

September 1914 "Miss Margaret Thompson arrived home Wednesday from an extended visit with relatives and friends at Oxford, Nebraska."

Margaret died in 1917, and she must be the Margaretha D. Thompson whose heirs proved up a quarter in 14, 1S 48W in 1921 - next to Henry's.

Jerome L. McClung proved up two quarters in 13, 1S 48W in 1916 - so two daughters of Henry were settling next to him.

In 1920 Yuma County Henry 57 and Dorothy 56, both Germany, have Anna 20 and Rosa 16, both Nebraska.  On the same page is Louis J. McClung 28, Emma 22, and son Kenneth 2.

Also on the page is Jens Thompson, 38, immigrating from Germany in 1889, naturalized in 1909

Anna Thompson married Lee Maggs in Wray July 19, 1927.

Lee had patented a post hole digger in 1918

and he was teaching in Idalia in 1917, and rural Kirk in 1918.

In 1930 Yuma County Henry Y. Thompson 67, and Dorothy 66, both Denmark, are farming, living on South Albany in Yuma.  Rose 26, born in Nebraska, is a clerk at J.C. Penney's.  Daughter Emma McClung, 32, also Nebraska, and her son Louis 9, Colorado are also with them.  Henry immigrated in 1883, Dorothy in 1886, and both naturalized 1902.

Jens June 8, 1865 - May 1926 and is buried in Yuma, in the same block as Margaret D. July 25, 1893 - September 8, 1917, Rose H - July 30, 1903 - April 7, 1970, Henry  September 20, 1862 - January 5, 1940,  and Catherine D.  Nov 1863 - March 1938

Anna L. Maggs, 30 is teaching in Yuma, living on South Albany, married. and Lee is teaching in Arboles, Archuleta County, boarding with the John Udell family.

Lee must be back in Yuma in 1934 - the directory has him teaching, living in the town of Yuma.

In 1940 Cortez, Colorado Lee D. Maggs 50 born in Kansas doesn't have an occupation.  Anna 40, born in Nebraska is a laundress at a tourist camp.  They have Joanne, 7 born in Colorado, and were in Yuma in 1935.

Anna L. Maggs, 1899-1943 is buried in the Cortez Cemetery.  The Onita J. Maggs 1932-1932 also buried there is most likely a daughter.  OR MAYBE A MISTAKE

Joanne Maggs was at CU in Boulder in 1954, rooming at the Velte lodging house.
