Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Melvin Raymond and Ella C. Sprout. Ernest William and Grace Sprout, Lee Alexander and Mae Sprout, Steffens

In 1880 DuPage County, Illinois Melvin is 1, with William 36 and Francis E. 32 Sprout.  Sister Jessie M. is 10, Ernest W. 7, Grace 5, and Alexander 3.

In 1900 Fillmore County, Nebraska William born Aug 1846 in Illinois, is married to Ida, April 1862 Iowa - she's had four kids, three living.  They must be Edna Friend May 1884 Iowa, John Friend Nov 1887, and Verna Friend Mar 1900, both Nebraska.  Melvin is a farm laborer.

In 1910 William and "Ada L. " are in Franklin County, with son Verne 10 and daughter Mary 7.

They're still there in 1920, with Vern C. 19, Mary E. 16, and Ada's mother Harriet Lott, 82, North Carolina.

William F. Sprout Aug 29, 1840 -Sep 24, 1937 and Frances Jun 29, 1847 - Apr 1 1894 are buried in Geneva, Fillmore County.

In 1910 Melvin is in Franklin County, Nebraska, married to Ella E. 22, and they have Harold W. eight months old.

Melvin proved up two quarters in 1, 1S 48W in 1913.  

1915 "Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Ewing, of Franklin, Nebr., who had been visiting their daughter, Mrs. M.R. Sprout and family, left Tuesday on a pleasure trip to California."

Melvin registered in Yuma County, saying he was born November 27, 1878, and nearest relative was Ella C. Sprout of Yuma.

In 1920 Yuma County they have Harold, Anna L. 5, Paul 3, and Melva 1.

They're back in Franklin County in 1930 with Harold, Anna Lee, Paul L., Melva I, Charles E. 8, Phoebe J. 6, and Betty Jo 2.  Melvin is a plumber.  The last three kids were born in Nebraska, so they must have left Yuma soon after 1920.

In 1940 Franklin County Mel and Charles are plumbers, and Phoebe 16 and Betty 2 are with them.

Melvin Raymond Sprout 1878-1960 is in the Franklin County Nebraska genweb listing, as is Ella (Ewing) Sprout 1885-1956.   So is Melvin Jr. 1911-1919. Charles 1922-2002, Harold dying 1995, Paul LeRoy 1916-1943

In 1900 Earnest Feb 1874 and Lee - July 1876 are farming in Franklin County, Nebraska - both single.

1911 "E.W. Sprout is a new member of the Pioneer family.... recently came in from Franklin, Nebr., and located on the Brewer farm south of town."

1912 "Attention, Cream Sellers - We are now ready to buy your cream at the Home Store, two doors north of the post office.  Highest market price paid at all times.  Weighing and testing by a man of your own choice - E.W. Sprout."

1913 "L.A. Sprout, who lives near Portland, Oregon, arrived Sunday for a visit with his brother, E.W. Sprout."

Ernest W.  proved up two quarters in 27 in 1N 48W in 1915 - witnesses Warren G. Giberson, Wesley W. Kindred, Carl E. Sauer, and Dallas L. Grove, all of Yuma.

1915 "E.W. Sprout will have a public sale at his farm, six miles south of Yuma, on Wednesday March 17th, at which will be sold 25 head of cattle, 5 head of horses, and some poultry, commencing at  1 o'clock."
Ernest William Sprout registered in Yuma, saying he was born February 20, 1873, and his nearest relative was Grace E. Sprout of Yuma.

Ernest W - 1873-1951 and Grace E. 1880-1959 are buried in Brush.

In 1910 Lee is a bookkeeper for a creamery in Franklin County, Nebraska, married three years to Mae - They have George W 3 and Thelma 13 months.

Lee A. proved up 320 acres in 28, 32, and 33 in 1N 48W in 1916

Lee registered in Yuma, saying he was born July 4, 1876

Lee A. 43 Sprout- - a livestock dealer -  and Mae 35 - Indiana are in  Vulcan Street, Yuma , in 1920, with George A. 12, Velma H. 11 both Nebraska, and Margaret Brantis 1 born in Colorado.   Ruth M. Baldwin 26 Michigan, a grade school teacher, rooms with them.

In 1930 Lamar, Colorado, Lee is running a cleaning shop, Mae is a seamstress there, George works there, and Thelma 21 and Margaret 12 don't have occupations.

Memorial services for longtime Lamar resident Miriam "Sis" Sprout was held at 11 a.m. Mon. Jan. 30, 2012 at the Lamar United Methodist Church.
Pastors Kathy Leathers and Ramon Robledo co-officiated. A private family burial took place at Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar, Colo. Visitation for Mrs. Sprout was held from noon to 7 p.m. on Sun. Jan. 29, 2012 at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in Lamar Colo. Sis was born Aug. 10, 1917 to Ray D. Gilbert and Hazel Gay Logan-Gilbert at Milton, Kan. She departed this life on Fri. Jan. 27, 2012 at Juniper Village in Lamar at the age of 94.
Mrs. Sprout was preceded in death by her Husband George W. Sprout of Lamar, Colo. on Oct. 21, 1983; by her parents Ray and Gay Gilbert of Lamar, Colo.; and by two brothers and their spouses Phillip (Martha) Gilbert of Lamar, Colo. and Robert (Evie) Gilbert , also of Lamar, Colo.
She is survived by two sons Gilbert L. "Gib" (Sherry) Sprout, D.D.S. of Lamar, Colo. and James P. "Jim" (Sonya) Sprout, C.F.P. of Ft. Collins, Colo.; by four grandchildren Jeffrey (Beverly) Sprout, D.D.S. of Evergreen, Colo., Christopher Sprout, D.D.S. of Denver, Colo., Rachael (Brian) Kelly of Madison, Ala., and Jana (Sean) Zaudke of Kansas City, Kan.; by great grandchildren Cole and Avery Sprout, Madelaine, Isabella, Joshua, and Jacob McLay, and Soren Zaudke; by step grandchildren Denai (Perry) Thornton, Kristi (Steve) Wolley, and Michael Marshall; and step great grandchildren Nicole and Patrick Thornton, Heather and Kara Wolley, and Courtney and Shawn Marshall. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many many friends.
