Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Ephraim Lester Sheets and May Bell Sheets and daughter Annie B Fail,  Sarah E. Sheets and son William C. Sheets, Steffens   If anyone knows how these two families are related, please let us know.

In 1860 Seneca County, Ohio George Sheets 24 and Amanda 22 have Ephraim 5 and Ann, 2.

In 1870 Seneca County they have Ephriam 15, Anna V. 12, Edwin 9, Etta 7, William 6,  James 3, and Sally two months.

In 1880 Smith County Kansas Ephram 25 and Maybell 17 have Anna, ten months.

In 1900 Ephram and May are in Smith County, Kansas, with Amy I., Sep 1882, Russell J. Sep 1884, Ward F, Mar 1888, Mary S. Sep 1892, Eva Dec 1893, Bessie A. Nov 1896, and Esther Sep 1899 - all kids born in Kansas.

Anna, born July 1879 in Kansas, has married John H. Fail born Dec 1875 in Kansas, and they have Zella M. born Nov 1897.

In 1910 they're in Yuma, where John is a real estate agent.  Zella is 12, and they have Harold F. 7, Forest 3, and Chester B. eleven months, all three born in Kansas.  Zella M. Hoch -1897-1

Amy married William E. Whittier and is buried in Sterling Colorado 40803820

In 1910 Ephriam and May are with her parents John and Mary E. Barrick in Santa Barbara, California.  Bessie A. 13 and Esther 10 , both born in Kansas,  are with them.

1915 "Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Sheets, accompanied by their daughter, Miss Esther of Franklin, Nebr., arrived Saturday and are visiting at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John H. Fail.  Mr. Fail's mother, Mrs. R.J. Fail, of Reamsville, Kansas, came on the same train."

In 1920 Ephriam and May are with daughter Bessie A. Byrum in Santa Barbara, California.

In 1930, now widowed, May is 66, with widowed Bessie in Franklin County, Nebraska.  Bessie's father-in-law Albert H. Byrum, widowed, 71 is also with them.

Ephraim 1854-December 31, 1925 and May Bell (Barrick) 1864-1930 are buried in the Yuma cemetery.  Ephraim was the son of George W and Amanda Susan (Beck) Sheets.  George 1833-1885 and Amanda 1837-1912 are buried in Smith County, Kansas.

May is buried in block 20.  - 

Ephriam is buried in block 29 - where John H. Fail was buried in 1918

In 1880 Republic County Kansas, William C. Sheets and Sarah, both 29, have Ira P., 10, Cary E. 8, Leander F. 4, and William C. 2.  All four kids born in Iowa,.

Probably Sarah E. Francis, in 1856 Wapello County Iowa is 5, with George W and Matilda Francis.

In 1900 Red Willow County, Nebraska, Sarah - October 1851 and William C. January 1878 are farming.

One tree said William married Stella May Peake June 4, 1902 in Red Willow County, - she died Oct 18, 1906 in  Red Willow County,  then William married Willmina Hester Richey March 9, 1909

In 1910 Red Willow County, Nebraska, William Sheets is 32, Iowa, Mina 30 Illinois, Francis 7, Wilber 5, Margaret, 5, and Floyd 3, all four in Nebraska.  Sarah, 58, Ohio, widowed, is with them.

1910 "William Sheets has been experiencing all kinds of trouble drilling a well on the Ed Adair homestead.  He lost the drill at a depth of about 60 feet and had to dig it out."

1911 "Mr. Sheets is fixing a well for H.R. Crenshaw."

September 1911 "Russel Sheets and family, of Reamsville, Kansas, left Sunday for their home after a two weeks' visit with his brother-in-law, J.H. Fail, and family."

1911 "Mrs. Ralph White and children arrived last week from Oklahoma for an extended visit with her mother, Mrs. Sheets."

1912 "Mrs. Sarah Sheets left Monday afternoon for Beaver City, Nebr., to spend the winter with her son."  (has to be Ira - his bio is at the bottom of this page)

1913

1913

December 12, 1913 "Dr. Cavey reports the arrival of a baby girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Sheets, some ten miles southwest of Yuma."

Wm. proved up two quarters in 34, 1S 48W and 3, 2S 48W in 1916, - witnesses Edward G. Ingraham, John Husted, Frank Morrifield, and Jesse Snyder, all of Yuma.

Sarah's heirs proved up two quarters in 33, 1S 48W in 1920.

In 1913 Sarah E. Sheets contested the claim of Margaret Plummer for the southeast of 33, 1 S 48W "wholly abandoned her homestead - has not erected any buildings and has not cultivated any portion."

1914

December 1914 "Will Sheets is drilling a well for the Yuma Creamery Company."

1914 "Mrs. Sarah Sheets, living southwest of town, left Tuesday afternoon for Iowa, in response to a message announcing that her mother was very low and not expected to live but a short time."

This probably is Kansas, where Matilda Jane (Stevens) Francis was living in 1910 with son Jacob and is buried there.

1915 "W.C. Sheets received word last week from Stockville, Nebr., where Mrs. Sheets has been with her parents for several weeks, of the arrival of a baby girl on February 12th"  This must be Agnes

Sarah E. Sheets, 1850-1914 is buried in Indianola, Nebraska.

In 1920 William is a well driller, living in Morgan County, Colorado.  Frances 16, Margret 14, Walter 14, Floyd 13, Lydia (This must be the one born in Yuma County), 6, and Agnes 4.

Willmina H. Sheets, 1884-1925, is buried in Potter, Cheyenne County, Nebraska

William C. Sheets married Mrs. Albena Chapman Dec 28, 1925 in Colorado - one tree said in Sterling, and that her name was Albena Gunderson, born in Potter Nebraska Nov 29, 1883.

In 1930 William, 52, still a well driller, is in Cheyenne County, Nebraska.  He's married to Albena, 46, born in Nebraska.  Agnes 15, Howard 8, William A. seven months - all three born in Nebraska.  Also with them are the Chapman stepkids - Mae 19, John 16, and Walter 12 - all three born in Nebraska.

In 1940 Cheyenne County William and Albina have just Howard 18 and Billy 10.  William, at 62 does "well work on farm"

William C. Jan 19, 1878 - Sept 13, 1947 and Albena Nov 29,1883 - July 10, 1957 are buried in Potter, Cheyenne County, Nebraska.
