Frank C. and Helen D. (Shoppe) Hoar, Steffens



Frank was the son of John D. Hoar 1826-1902 buried in Holly Colorado. John was a Methodist preacher. In 1849, before John's marriage to Hannah ( March 3rd, 1859, Mt. Carroll, Illinois by Rev. F. C. Winslow) he went to California to test his luck in the gold rush. He drove an ox team on a covered wagon to California. Sold them and walked back. In 1853, John David Hoar lived in Grant County, Wisconsin. John David Hoar and Hannah Maria Pyle were married 3 March 1853 in Mount Carroll, Carroll County, Illinois. They were married by Reverend F. C. Winslow, Minister of M. E. Church. John David served in the military during the Civil War in Company B, 30th Wisconsin Infantry from 15 August 1862 to 20 September 1865. He appeared in the 1870 census in Dayton, Richland County, Wisconsin. John and Hannah moved to Monona County, Iowa in 1881. In 1883 they moved to Charles Mix County, South Dakota. He died 24 November 1902 in Holly, Prowers, Colorado (# 36778913). Hannah died 21 March 1904 in Holly, Prowers, Colorado # 36778835. Both are buried in Holly, Prowers, Colorado.
Frank Carver Hoar, son of John David and Hannah Marie, was born on June 12, 1872 near Boaz, Wisconsin. In the days of his youth, he was a surveyor of the Black Hills in South Dakota.

In 1880 Monona County, Iowa, John Hoar is 52, Hannah 46, George E. 22, David 20, Minnie 16, Emma 13, Dessie 11, Frnak 9, Morris 6, and Eva 3.

On February 14, 1903, Frank married Helen Dorothy Olive Schoppe. Helen was the daughter of Ferdinand J. and Louise Gesche Schoppe of Ferney, Brown County, South Dakota. Helen was born on April 28, 1885 in Ferney, Brown County, South Dakota.


In 1910 Red Willow County, Nebraska, Frank is 38, Helen 24, Virgil M.6, Frank C. Jr. 4, Louise B. 2, and Rollin R. two months.

In 1920 Yuma County, Frank is 47, Helen 35, Virgil Merle 16, Frank Jr. 13, Louise F. 11, Robert Roland 9, and Everett Earl 7.

In 1930 Yuma County, Frank is 57, Helen 18, Everett 17, and Morris D. 5.

Frank died on February 15, 1934 in Yuma, Colorado. Helen died on December 2, 1962, in Yuma. In 1935, Helen changed the spelling of the Hoar surname to Harr.

Frank and Helen had six sons and one daughter.

July 1911 "Frank Hoar met with quite an accident Tuesday.  While fixing a screen door a portion of the sod walls fell in , covering him almost to his neck and completely burying his 16 month's old baby.  They escaped injury with the exception of a few scratches on the baby's face and head."

Frank claimed 320 acres in 6, 1 S 48W in 1914.

In 1920 Yuma County Frank Carter Hoar is 47, Wisconsin, Helen Dorothy 35 South Dakota.  They have Virgil Merle 16, Frank Jr. 13, and Louise Freda 11, Robert Roland 9, all four born in Nebraska, and Everett Earl 7, Colorado.

In 1930 Frank is 57, Helen D. 45, Evert E. 17, and Morris D. 5. are in Yuma County.

Helen is living on South Buffalo Street in 1940 Yuma, with Morris.

The tombstone in Yuma has Frank C. Harr, June 12, 1872- Feb 15, 1934 and Helen D. April 28, 1885-Dec 2, 1962.  Another marker has Frank Carver Harr - June 12, 1872 - Feb 15, 1934


Frank C. Hoar died last Thursday at the family home, twelve miles southwest of Yuma, after an illness of only a few hours. Hr. Hoar had been in failing health during the past years complaining at times with pains in the head and dizziness. During the past several weeks he had been feeling unusually well. He arose on the morning of his death in very good spirits, joking wiwth his wife and small son in his usual jovial manner. He went about his morning chores, and while at work he was stricken very violently with his old malady. So intense was the pain in his head that he sent his son to the house to call Mrs. Hoar out to assist him to the house. A physician was summoned from Yuma, but he case was beyond medical aid, and he breathed his last shortly before the noon hour. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the local Methodist church, Pastor H. C. Alley officiating, and the interment was the Yuma Cemetery.

Frank Carver Hoar was born in Wisconsin June 12, 1872, and died at his home 12 miles southwest of Yuma, February 15, 1934, at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 2 days. The family moved from the place of his birth when he was nine years old to Monona county, Iowa. In 1883 they moved to Charles Mix county, South Dakota. They lived two years in Prowers county, Colorado. In 1910 he homesteaded 12 miles southwest of Yuma, where the family have resided ever since.
To this union five boys and one girl was born: Virgil M. of DeNova, Colorado, Frank C. of Platner, Colorado; Louise Gaines of Sterling, and Roland, Everett, and Morris of Yuma. He leaves also two sisters, Mrs. Emma Pierce of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Mrs. Eva Covey of Hastings, Nebraska, and one brother, Morris G. Hoar of Alexandria, Minnesota.

He was a very devoted husband and father and a good neighbor. He had a wide circle of friends, who were attracted to him his genial, jovial nature, and who will greatly miss his passing.

The relatives present besides family were two nieces, Mrs. Evelyn Bradley and Miss Fern Covey, who reside in this city, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pansegrau of Aberdeen, South Dakota.


Helen D. (Schoppe) Harr 1885-1962 is buried in Yuma # 11447724.

December 29, 1960 "The Frank Harrs entertained with a Christmas dinner on Monday for the following relatives: Mr. and Mrs. Orin Gaines, Mr. and Mrs. Jr. Gaines and Dennis, Mr and Mrs. Edward Harr and sons, all of Sterling; Mr. and Mrs. Roland Harr and Carroll of Lone Star; Everett Harr and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Harr and family, of Albia, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harr and Julia of Peoria, Illinois, and Mrs. and Mrs. Leonard Forbes and family of Fort Morgan. Those attending the dinner from Yuma were Mrs. Helen Harr, mother of Frank Harr, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Harr, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Wilkins and family. This is the first time all the brothers and sisters have been together in fifteen years."

FRANK

Frank Carver Harr, 92, of Hallsville Missouri, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Centralia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Fenton Funeral Chapel in Centralia with the Rev. Darrell Kirk officiating. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Harr was born April 10, 1906, in McCook, Neb., to Frank Carver and Helen Dorothy Schoppe Harr Sr.
He married Dorothy Pearl Gilliland on June 15, 1932, in St. Francis, Kan., and she survives.
He was a member of Church of God Holiness in Hallsville and was a retired farmer.
Other survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Alice Forbes of Hallsville; a brother, Morris Harr of Yuma, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.


LOUISE

Louise F. Gaines, 86, of Sterling, Colorado, died Dec. 30, 1996, in Sterling. Visitation and viewing will begin at noon Thursday at the Chaney-Walters Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Riverside Cemetery with Father Terence Keefe officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in her name.
Mrs. Gaines was born July 24, 1908, to Frank and Helen Harr in McCook, Neb. She moved to Sterling in 1928.
She married Oren Gaines on April 16, 1928, in Sterling. They operated the Gaines Iron and Metal Salvage Yard from 1935 until Mr.Gaines death in 1968. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.
Mrs. Gaines is survived by a son, Ira "JR" Gaines and wife Pauline of Sterling; a close friend, Ralph Lindsay of Sterling; two brothers, Morris Harr of Yuma and Frank Harr of Hallsville, Mo.; one granddaughter; one step-grand daughter and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson Dennis Gaines in 1990 and three brothers.

VIRGIL


Virgil M. Harr 1903-1975 and V. Esther 1905-1983 # 11447719 are buried in Yuma.

Virgil's daughter Velma married Dale Stetson.

ROLAND

In 1940 Roland is 30, in Washington County, Colorado, with Hazel 28.  They have Edward 10 and Merle 8.
