James Henry Brooks and Drusilla E. (Walters) Brooks, Steffens

James and Drusilla married August 11, 1881 in Menard County, Illinois.

In 1900 Menard County, Illinois, James H., January 1845, a carpenter, and Drusilla March 1861 have Anna L. April 1882, Alva L. March 1884, Arch Sep 1886, and Mary C. July 1890.  All six born in Illinois.  Drusilla has five children living.

1910 Dundy County, Nebraska, James H. Brooks 66, farmer, Iowa has been married 24 years to Druvilla E. 49, Illinois.  They have Archibald L. 24, son Jean 8, Etta B. 24 daughter-in-law- (Etta Benson Brooks)

June 1912 "Preston Stephens this week sold his residence property, in the west part of town, to a Mr. Brooks from near Benkelman, Nebr.  Mr. Stephens will continue to occupy the property until the first of next March."

1912 "H.C. Hoch last week sold his residence property to J.H. Brooks, from Nebraska.   Mr. Brooks moved in this week.  Mr. Hoch will soon commence the erection of a fine new home."

October 1912 "J.H. Brooks, solicitor dealer in real estate and homestead locator, Yuma, Colorado.  The man who treats you white.  You do your own trading - the seller pays the commission.  Also agent for Flanders automobiles and Huber threshing machines and engines."

February 1913 "J.H. Brooks and family moved the first of the week to their homestead south of town."

1913 the Yuma County commissioners paid Hurbert Work $21.00 for care of J.H. Brooks.

September 1913 "J.H. Brooks was tried at Wray last night on a charge of insanity and ordered committed to the asylum at Pueblo, to which place he was taken this morning by Sheriff Bullard."

James proved up two quarters in 33 and 34, 1S 48W in 1914.

February 1914 the commissioners paid Woodcroft Hospital $30.80 for care of James H. Brooks.

  Woodcroft Sanitarium, a private mental hospital in Pueblo since 1896.. The Woodcroft property of 70 acres was located in a rather precarious site, in between the Fountain River and a two-track railroad, just outside the city limits of northeast Pueblo. The only access to the buildings was through a hazardous road that crossed the railroad tracks. In fact, two patients and a nurse were killed at that crossing.

On June 30, 1914 J.B. Campbell, Conservator of the estate of James H. Brooks, insane, gave notice that he would appear before the Yuma County Court for final settlement.

In 1920 James Henry Brooks is an inmate at the Jacksonville State Hospital, Morgan County, Illinois.

James H. -Jan 1, 1844 - Nov 27 1928 and Drusilla E. Mar 20, 1881 - January 18, 1918 are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Menard County, Illinois.
