Isabell J., Margaret and Julia Sargent

 

Isabell and Julia each cash-claimed a quarter in 1891 about eight miles northeast of Yuma, and Margaret homesteaded a quarter a mile west of Yuma in 1898 - so they probably all arrived about 1891.

In 1880 Fillmore County, Nebraska Isbella J. Sargent - 40, born in Kentucky, and Cornelius 52. also in Kentucky, have Maggie E, 20, school teacher born in Kentucky, Kate 17 Kentucky, Julia 15 Indiana, and Walter 8 Illinois.'

Maggie is also listed as a boarder - school teacher - with the William P. Laing family in Fillmore County.

Cornelius died February 9, 1886 and is buried in the Fairmont Nebraska cemetery.

Born in Louisville, KY to John and JulieAnn (Cosdon) Sargent.
Civil War Veteran, Company D; 4th Regiment; Indiana Cavalry.
Well known Fairmont druggist. '

Isabelle J. "Maggie" Smith Sargent 1840 -May 16, 1892 is also buried there "died in Yuma, Colorado"

Isabella Sargent was buried in the Yuma cemetery in 1893.

Julia V. Sargent Atherton is also buried in Fairmont.

Born in Evansville, IN to Dr. Cornelius C. and Isabelle J. "Maggie" Sargent.
Married Henry A. Atherton on October 23, 1890.  Henry, Julia, and their son Harold are all in Fairmont.

A letter written April 1888 says "My mother, sister Julia and Walter are in Colorado.  Mother and Julia went out there last March and each took up a pre-emption. Their land joins and their shanties, I think I won't call them houses, are about forty rods apart.  I spent last summer with them and had a real restful time, which means a great deal to one tired out.  I expect to spend the summer there and I may possibly get me some land if our fortune arrives. if not I presume I will still continue teaching the young ideas learn to school.."  M. B. Sargent

She might be the Margaret Sargent February 1860 Kentucky, cook in the Richard Gallagher home in Santa Clara, California.

The Yuma Pioneer of December 1903 "A letter from Miss Margaret Sargent of California, states that she expects to soon return to our little city."

In 1910 Margaret us a helper on a dairy farm near Santa Clara.  Sister-in-law of William and Katherine Wilson , whose family run the dairy.  Katherine is 47, born in Indiana.

Wray July 1906 "Mrs. Wm. Sargent arrived Wednesday from Chicago, to join her husband who is head clerk and bookkeeper in the C.F. Hentrie hardware store.  They will at once go to housekeeping in the Jacob Cox residence in the east part of town."

1908 "If Bill Sargent's wife don't return home pretty soon he will have to be kept under surveillance."

"Will Sargent, bookkeeper at the Hendrie hardware store, was unable to be at his work on account of the illness of Mrs. Sargent."

Wray June 1908 "The town board has appointed William Sargent clerk for the ensuing year."

Wray 1908 "Wilbur Sargent went to Denver Monday afternoon where he secured a residence to receive the household goods that were shipped Wednesday.  He will return the first of the week for his wife and baby."

In 1910 in Denver Wilber H. Sargent is a clerk in a supply house.  Josephine 25 and Marian G 2 all born in Illinois.

In 1920 Wilbur is a sales manager for a metal manufacturing plant in Denver.  He and Josephine have a daughter Josephine, 7 born in Colorado.

In 1930 Wilbur is a clerk at a plumbing company.  Josephine is with them, and they've added Joanne. 5.

In 1940 Wilbur is assistant manager at a plumbing company. Jeanne, Josephine S McDowell, and daughter Edith A. 2 are with them
