Catharine proved up a quarter in 20, 2N 47W in 1892, meaning she settled
around 1885. her claim was next to Eliza J. Hain (Heirs of) also in 1892,
so they might have been related.
The 1885 Falls City Nebraska census has a Catharine Garrard, age 55, born in
Ohio. That matches the 1880 St Joseph County Indiana listing of Catharine,
living with son John J. 25 and his wife Elizabeth.
That almost certainly is the John J. Garrard that in 1890 cash-claimed a
quarter in 14, 5N 49W - far northeast Washington County, about fifteen miles wnw
of Catharine's. In 1895 he cash-claimed another quarter in 15 -next to his
first claim.

September 1903 "J.N. Rupel of Indiana, who has been visiting on the
Pacific coast for a few weeks, came in from the west on 14, Saturday evening, and was the guest of his
nephews J. H. Grannis and J.J. Garrard until Monday night, when he left on 6 for the east.
A friend Oliver Fulmer accompanied him."

California to reside."

In 1910 Fresno John is working for a railroad. and he and Elizabeth are
both 56. Daughter Margaret A is 21, an assistant in a doctor's office, and
Catherina 80, is with them.
If John was working for a railroad in the 1880's, he very well could have
obtained rail passage cheaply.
November 2, 1946 "Pacific Grove, California - John J. Garrard, 91, one of the oldest
Masons in California, died here last night after a brief illness.
He was a member of the Fresno Masonic Lodge 247 and had been affiliated with the
order for 70 years. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Edna Dobson,
and Miss Margaret Garrard, both of Pacific Grove, and Mrs. Kathryn Scott, San Bernardino. Funeral services will be held here Sunday. "
