Ernest Ettel

Ernest Ettel had proved up a quarter in 23, 2N 47W in 1894, so he was there at least in 1887.  The Denver Land office on-line list has a Bernart (sic) Ettel filing in 2N 47W, and a Bernarh (sic) for a Timber Culture  in 4N 48W but the BLM records don't show them.

Artilda J. Bruner of Yuma married Bernard Ettel of Yuma July 24, 1888 - minister J.B. Burr of Yuma.  Witnesses were Hans Bruner and Earnest Ettel, M.A. White and Alex Gilson. (Yuma was in Washington County at that time)     John D. Burr 1892 homestead touched both Daniel Knisley and the Ettel quarters. 

One Ancestry tree has a Nellie Ettel dying in 1890, and Family Search has Robert Bernard Ettel birth record in Farnhamville, Calhoun County, Iowa, December 27, 1892 parents Bernard Ettel and Artilda "Burner."  So Artilda must have left Yuma County right after Bernard's death.

Margaret is likely the Margaret A. White in 1880 Smith County, Kansas.  She's 7, born in England.  Parents are James 37 Scotland and Hannah 32 England White.  Alexander is 11, Daniel 9, James 4, and George 1.  All kids born in England, except George in Kansas.

Maybe Bernard is Martin Bernhard Ettel, born 1856 per one tree, brother of Ernest.

THE YUMA CEMETERY HAS A "BERNARD  ETTEL 1892" record #49486650

Reuben Barnard Bruner registered for WWI in Sac City Iowa, saying he was married with children, and was born January 16, 1888 at "Uma" Colorado

1841 the Atlantic had Heinrich Ettelt 49, Eva 40, Caroline 17, Matiltie 16, Bernhard 14, Helene 12, Sophia 10, Catherine 8.

In 1850 New York City Henry and Eve Ettelt have Benjamine 23, Sophia 19, Mary 17,and Eliza 14.

The First German Presbyterian Church in New York City has a christening of Ernst Ettelt born September 28, 1858 - parents Bernhard Ettelt and Christine Haendel.

Ettelt, William born March 12, 1868 parents: Bernahrd and Christinia Ettelt.  Living in Union district.


In 1870 Grant County, West Virginia Bernard 43 Saxony, Christina 38 Bavaria have Ernest  12  Henry 16, Benjamin 9, Martin 5, and William 2..  But this says Henry was born in New York, Ernest and Benjamin in Virginia, and Martin and William in West Virginia.

In 1880 Bernerd "Etlet" and Christine only have Martin and William.

Burnhart Ettel, born April 7, 1827 in Maysville ? died March 31, 1900 in Grant County - married to Christina, father Henry.

William, born  in Grant County, died there March 25, 1889 aged 21 years 13 days.

Ernest Ettel married Margaret A. White January 4, 1889. "near Yuma"  at the home of the bride's parents (that would be James and Hannah White) by A.J. Andres, pastor of the M.E. Church at Yuma.  Bernard and Artilda J. Ettel were witnesses.

In 1900 York, Nebraska Ernest Ettel is a farm laborer, September 1858 in New York.  He's been married 11 years (meaning 1889), Margaret July 1872 in England has had four children.

James Oct 1889 in Colorado , Ernest June 1891 in Colorado, Martin May 1895 in Nebraska, and Henretta February 1900 in Nebraska.

Margaret has had four children four living -   So Margaret was in Colorado in 1889 and 1891, but not in 1895.

In 1908 York Ernest is a janitor, Ernest A. and James B. students.

In 1930 Omaha Margaret 57 is widowed, living with daughter Annetta Moore 30 and her husband Clair.

Metz Funeral Home in York, Nebraska has a record of Ettel, Ernest, born September 28, 1858, Dying March 7, 1924  - "Smith is another name listed"


Ernest Ettel 1858-1924 is buried in York County, per # 115651421.

Margaret is in the 1935 Denver directory as "wid Earnest" living at 1042 Lipan.  Clare Moore (Annetta) a salesman for Hall Baking Co., also lives there.


Margaret is listed in the 1940 Denver census as Margaret MOORE, with Clarie 39 and Annette N. 40. Robert Lee is 19, a Fuller Brush salesman., and Claire works at a bakery.

Margaret Ann Ettel's 1958 probate record in Denver is "missing" in the Colorado archive location.    But there's a Larimer County probate of Mrs. M.A. Ettel August 24, 1960. 

The tombstone in Grandview Cemetery, Larimer County has "Margaret Ettel - 1872 -1959" and the FindAGrave # 55984565 note says Margaret Ann Ettel - July 4, 1872 - May 25, 1959.

James Bernhardt Ettel registered for WWI in York, Nebraska, saying he was born October 26, 1889 in Yuma.  He was working in a retail grocery.


James, age 31, married Flora Menken in Polk County, Iowa Apil 15, 1920.
She was 25, daughter of John H. Menken and Lydia Copeland.

1931 Greeley Colorado "Miss Rachael Winter spent several days of last week in Fort Collins, and accompanied Mr. and Mrs. James Ettel, Mr. Mankin and son Jimmy here Sunday. The Fort Collins visitors spent Sunday with the David Winter family. Rachael also attended the Eaton high school senior class play Tuesday night."

1932 Greeley Colorado "Mr. and Mrs. James Ettel and son and his young friends from Fort Collins spent Sunday at the David Winter home."

In 1940 Fort Collins, James B. is 50, a retail store proprietor, with Flora 47 born in Nebraska, and James V. 14 born in Colorado.
James registered for WWII in Fort Collins, living at 1100 N. Mountain with referenct Flor A. Ettel of 926 N. 7th.
In 1966 San Diego, James B. (Flora A.) are retired, living at 7212 Blackton Dr. ((LM). James V. (Melba I.) is a driver for R.E. Hazard, and they live in LM. So does Martin W. (Edna A. ( retired.
He died October 21, 1967 in San Diego County, California.
Flora has two entries in the 1969 San Diego directory - one as widow of James on Broadmoor, and another with James on Blackson. James V. (Melba( is a fireman at the NAS, living at the 6040 Broadmoor address.
James B. Ettel and Flora A. Ettel 1891-1986 are in a masoleum in Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego.
( Annetta married Claire Moore. Claire, born Feb 12, 1901 at Holbrook Nebraska to Henry Moore and Henrietta Cowman, was killed in an auto accident March 6, 1975 west of Fort Stockton, Texas. He was to be buried at Kerrville, Texas.
Annetta 1900-1987 is buried in Kerrville # 67896852. "Clare" A. Moore 1901-1975 is buried with her # 67896853.)
Their son Robert Lee Moore 1920-1981 died in Denver, per # 28205243.

Ernest Alexander Ettel is in the California death index, saying he was born June 30, 1891 in Colorado, and died February 18, 1984 in San Diego, mother's maiden name White.  Ernest Ettl, Jr. was a bugler, and Martin W. Ettel was a private.in the WWI militia Company M of York, Nebraska.

Martin Ettel age 27 married Fannie S. Hanlin age 26 on September 13, 1893 by Rev. Jno T. Cosner.

While doing research into the Ettel (Ettelt) family we discovered a small Notebook that belonged to my grandfather Ernest Ettel (dated 1876. In it were notes on where he worked in Maysville, Grant Co. and how much he earned. Also in it were several hand written songs i.e. "Grant County Girls", "Goodby to our Darling", "The Allegahny Girls". Does anyone know if these songs are still in use, and if so what is the music? James Victor Ettel, 78, of Cheyenne died Nov. 28 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Fort Collins, Colo., and had lived here for four years with prior residence in Fort Collins.

Mr. Ettel was a fire fighter for the U.S. Government for 35 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elks, VFW, Moose and American Legion.

Mr. Ettel is survived by his wife, Melba I. Ettel of Cheyenne whom he married Dec. 31, 1948; a son, James Martin Ettel of Denver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Flora Ettel.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the VA Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Carol Carr officiating.

Will of Martin Ettel

I, Martin Ettel, of near Maysville, in Grant County, West Virginia, do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills made by me, and direct the payment of my just debts, and funeral expenses.

First – I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.

Second – I bequeath to my brother, Ernest Ettel the sum of Five Dollars to be paid out of my estate.

Third – I give, devise, and bequeath unto my wife, Fannie Ettel, in fee and absolutely all of my property that I may have at the time of my death, real, personal, and mixed, that may remain after my just debts and funeral expenses, and said bequest of Five Dollars be paid.

Fourth – I appoint my brother-in-law, Martin L. Hanlin, my Executor of this, my last will and testament.

Witness my signature this the 10th day of June, 1922.
