Photograph from the W.B. Coston collection.
Some family information below is from Jack Schafer's article about his
grandparents published in the 1989 Yuma County centennial book.
Henry A. Schafer was born in 1868 near Brock, Nebraska into the German immigrant family of Carl Andrew and Mary M. Schafer. Eliza Beuchler was born in 1867 at Wausean, Ohio to Peter and Amelia Beuchler. In 1890 she moved to Auburn, Nebraska to stay with an aunt, Julia Beigneur, and in January 1891 Eliza and Henry were married at Johnson, Nebraska.
In 1892 Henry and his brothers, Frank, Andrew and Louis, moved to the "Vernon Flats" area of Yuma County to establish homesteads. The brothers settled on adjoining quarters of land in sections 2, 3 and 11 of T1S R44W five miles northeast of the new town of Vernon.
Henry and Elza raised their seven children in the Vernon community. All attended the nearby Radnor school where Henry served on the school board. Eliza died in 1924 and Henry in 1936. They are buried in Vernon's Glendale Cemetery.
