Yuma County Pioneers

Madison Stubbs



One tree said his parents were Zimri Stubbs 1828-1968 buried in Preble County, Ohio # 25003865.

In 1860 Lucas County, Iowa, Zimri is 35, farming, Rosanna 25, with William 6, Edgar 4, Madison 2, and Zelda six months.

In 1870 Marion County, Iowa, Zemie is 47, R. 45, Wm. 17, M. 15, H. 13, E. 11, C. 9, and A. 7.

In 1880 Daviess County, Missouri, Madison is 22, born in Iowa, a farm laborer, single.
In 1885 Gage County, Nebraska, Madison is a laborer, 29, now married to Susan 29 born in Missouri, with May 2 born in Nebraska.

Fort Morgan Colorado June 21, 1895 "Sheriff Haff left this morning with Madison Stubbs for Pueblo, where the latter will be taken into the insane asylum for treatment."

October 1895 "It is reported that the Stubbs family living in the house near the brick yard, are in almost a destitute condition, and the attention of the charitable are called to them. The county commissioners will meet on Monday, and no doubt will look after them. The head of the family, as will be remembered, is now at the insane asylum, and some time since was reported so far improved that it was thought he would be sent home soon."

March 1896 "Sheriff-Gordon yesterday morning took four of the children of Mrs. Stubbs to the Orphans' Home, at Denver, where they will be the charge of the state for some time. The father, it will be remembered, is in the insane asylum, and the family been a county charge all winter."


Madison proved up a quarter in 31, 2N 45W in 1903 - two miles east of Eckley.

Marie Stubbs owned that land in 1920.

In 1900, 1910, and 1930 Madison is widowed, in the state hospital in Pueblo.

Madison Marion Stubbs 1856-1939 is buried in Burlington # 127744063, with wife Susan (Williams) Stubbs 1854=1897 buried in Denver # 55614294.

Alonzo Glenwood Stubbs registered for WWI in Englewood, Colorado, bon May 17, 1887 at Yuma. He had been in the army artillery service for six years.

Alonzo 1887-1958 is buried in Burlington # 89681095 - a mechanic in WWI army.

GEORGE

In 1900 Denver, Goerge is an inmate at the state home for dependent children, born July 1893, Jerome March 1891, and Alonzo March 1888, all born in Colorado.

In 1910 Goodland, Kansas, George Stubbs is 16, born in Colorado, living with half-brother George William 24, born in Kansas, father in MIssouri, mother in Iowa.

George Irving Stubbs registered for WWI at Shakan, Alaska, bon July 18, 1893 at Eckley. He was a cannery laborer, single. He had been a Navy fireman for four years.
He had married Bessie Klooz of Burlington, daughter of Fred and Flora Klooz.
George 1893-1978 # 89681178 and Bessie 1902-1986 # 89681139 ae buried in Burlington.

"Mr. Stubbs was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Burlington, to George and Bessie (Klooz) Stubbs. He served as a corporal during World War II in France with the 242nd Infantry. "

Glenn George Stubbs 1923-2007 is buried in Clifton, Colorado, # 149817818.

Madison (Mattie) Stubbs departed from this life May 22, 2007, at the age of 85 years. He was the first of five children born of George I. and Bessie (Klooz) Stubbs on May 29, 1921. He attended the Burlington school system from the age of 7 years until graduating with the class of 1940. He was active in all school sports. During his high school summers he worked for local farmers, Safeway and the city light plant.

Mattie Joined the Colorado National Guard, Company I at the age of 16. In 1942 he was drafted into the US Army and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He was honorably discharged from service in December of 1945. He worked for the city of Burlington as a policeman and an electrical linesman, and for Kit Carson County in road maintenance until his retirement.

Mattie and Dorothy Seelhoff were married in Goodland, KS, Jan. 25, 1942. To this union three children were born: Marion Madison and twins Elise Ann and Ellis Van. He was an active baptized, confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burlington and was a member of the VFW Post 6491. Mattie was an avid Bronco and Rockies fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, scouting, vacations, playing cards, dominoes and checkers with his family and friends. After retirement he was active in RSVP, McArthur Senior Center activities and the Share Program.

Preceding him in death are his father George, mother Bessie and one sister, Marie.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; 2 sons, Marion and wife Tink of Golden, CO; and Ellis and wife Jane of Louisville, CO; a daughter, Elise and husband Duane Gile of Scandia, KS; a brother, Glenn Stubbs of Clifton, CO, 2 sisters Delores Bishop of LaJunta, CO and Bonita Oldham of Brighton, CO; 10 grandchildren, Tracey Ritchie, Kelly Perna, Chad Gray, Kade Gile, Jared “Pete� Gile, Luke Gile, Shan Brunel, Kim Szecsi, David Stubbs and Wayne Topliss; and 14 great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Mattie were held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 10:30 am at the 1st St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Hanson officiating. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery with military honors provided by Burlington VFW Post 6491.


Marie Drake died in Snohomish County, Washington October 1, 1943, age 60.
