Jacob and Eunice Sechrist

Jacob was  born July 12, 1829 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, dying 1924 , marrying Eunice Ellen Warner Sechrist 1830-1919.  

1905 "E.L. Sechrist has sold three quarters of land belonging to his father, Jacob Sechrist, to parties from Missouri."


In 1870 Keokuk County, Iowa Jacob, 41 and Eunice 39 have "Alego" 14, M.S. 13, Emmitt 10, Eva 7, Edgar 5, and Myrtie two months.

In 1880, still in Keokuk, they have Alonzo 24, Emmet 19, Nettie 17, Edgar 14, Myrtle 10, and Gertrude 8.

Jacob Sechrist claimed 240 acres in 1902 just north of Robb, by a Timber claim

Jacob and Eunice are buried in Inglewood Park, Los Angeles.

Eva Lunette "Nettie" was born January 6, 1863 in Ohio, married Thomas Elmore DeArmond,



Eva L. Dearmond proved up a quazrter in 22, 2N 45W in 1896, and timber-claimed one in section 23 in 1895.

In 1900 Yuma County Thomas and Eva  have Zella E. Aug 1889 and Zolla R. June 1894, both born in Colorado.

In 1910 Yuma County Thomas Dearmond, 48, Eva L. 47, Zella E. 20, Zola 16 have Edgar's two - Lloyd and Sadie with them.


In 1920 Los Angeles County Thomas is farming in Los Angeles County, and Jacob Sechrist is living with them.

Eva died March 22, 1958 in San Diego County -

Thomas, born June 26, 1861 in Iowa,  died November 11, 1950 in Los Angeles. - Mother's maiden name Bebb. Both are buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Los Angeles County.

Mertie

In 1900 Keokuk County Fountain, born July 1870 and Myrtle L, April 1870 have Dean A, June 1896.

In 1910 Keokuk County Fountain O Bottorf, 39, Iowa, has been married 17 years to Mertie L, 39.  They have Deane A., 13.

In 1915 Keokuk County Mertie is 44, married, a Methodist.

Dean registered for WWI in Long Beach, California, saying he ws born June 18, 1891, single.

In 1920 they're in Long Beach, where Fountain is a carpenter.

In 1927 they're in Long Beach, living at 35 Sicilian.  Deane A. (May) is a teacher at John Dewey School.

Mertie L. Bottorff, born April 1870 in Iowa, died September 9, 1940 in Orange County, California.  Father's surname Sechrist, mother's maiden name Warner.

Alonzo was admitted to the bar March 3, 1887 in Washington County - when Wray was in Washington County.

He cash-claimed a quarter in 34, 2N 45W - just southwest of Robb - in 1890, and a Timber quarter in 1895

Alonzo G. Sechrist of Wray and Mrs. Mattie E. Taylor of Maryville, Nodaway County, Missouri married September 28, 1897 in Wray in presence of Jacob Sechrist and Barnett E. Ridgeway - Pastor Louis J. Hole of the M.E. Church.

A.G. Sechrist was one attorney in a 1900 court case in Wray.

He might be the 1900 "Editor Sechrist of the Wray Times was a Yuma business visitor two days this week."

1901 "The Wray Times closed shop at Wray last Friday.  Mr. Sechrist and family will launch in the new town of Lawton, Oklahoma.  Success to them."

In 1907 Lawton Alonzo G. Sechrist (Mattie E.) is manager of Lawton Real Estate & Mining Exchange, Lawyer 604 D. ave, r. same.

The 1910 Lawton census has A.G. 55, Ohio, married 12 years to Mattie E. 39, Missouri.  They have Bessie 15, Missouri, sister-in-law? Nona Conway 25, Missouri, milliner, and two roomers.

In 1920 Lawton Alonzo and Mattie are alone.

In 1930 Lawton Alonzo is with Charles and Hattie B. Betz,  saying he's married, but no spouse.  In 1940 he's alone, still saying he's married, but no spouse.

In 1930 and 1940 Los Angeles Mattie E. is living with daughter Bess E. and her husband Warren B. Bayless.

Mattie E. Sechrist, born July 28, 1870 in Missouri, died Nov 3, 1947 in Los Angeles, mother's maiden name Albertson, father's name Conway.

A.G. Sechrist - 1855- Oct 18, 1947 is buried in Highland Cemetery, Lawton

Mattie E. Conway Sechrist - July 28, 1870 - Nov 3, 1947 is buried in Forest Lawn, Glendale, California

Emmet proved up a homestead quarter in section 33, 2N 45W in 1894, and a cash-claim quarter next to it in 1890

1899

In 1902 Emmett sold his Wray flour mills to Wray Mills, N.D. Beaver, Prop, B.R. Stickley, Miller

1905 :Emmett Sechrist of Vernon, has sold his mercantile business, Jesse Stevens and A.J. Wakefield being the purchasers.  The Gazette has not learned Mr. Sechrist's future intentions."

1912 "Emmett Sechrist, of Arleta, Washington, is visiting relatives and friends in Wray and vicinity."

1918 letter from Simon Dow in Newberg, Oregon "Emmett Sechrist and son, Orlo, are in the grain business at Ballston, just across the line in Polk County (Oregon).  They are doing well I think.  I have met Emmett a number of times in Good Roads meetings, a movement he takes a great deal of interest in.  He seems to be one of the leaders in his section and generally represents them in all public gatherings for the promotion of community interests."

In 1920 Polk County, Oregon Jacob O. is 31,  managing a warehouse,with Mary E. 29, born in Canada, and they have Mary Elizabeth 3.

In 1930 Yamhill County Jacob and Mary have Mary E., 13, Marjorie A.  and Jacob A. 5.

Jacob Orlo Sehrist of Sheridan Yamhill County, Oregon registered for WWII saying he worked for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission in Portland.  He died Septemer 18, 1958 in Multnomah County, Oregon.

Emmet L. Sechrist , born Aug 10,1860, died July 4, 1947, and Sarah A. Sechrist Jul 2, 1863 - Jan 28, 1942 are both  buried in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

Daughter Essie Feb 12, 1887 - Nov 25, 1942 is also in Evergreen.

Morris Simpson Sechrist

Morris was born Dec 1, 1856 in Iowa, and married Sarah, who died in 1938, and is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Los Angeles.

-   Morris married Maggie Braden Sechrist, and both are buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Keokuk County, Iowa.

Morris cash-claimed a quarter next to Alonzo in 1891

Edgar married Ida Heninger, and son Floyd died August 3, 1891 at age one.  Floyd is buried in Mount Zion cemetery, Keokuk County, Iowa.

Edgar cash-claimed a quarter in 1N 45W, section 2, in 1890, and a quarter by Timber in 1895.



In 1900 Yuma County "Edger" H. is 34, "Idia" 29, and they have Loyd 7, Ray H. 5, and Sadie E. 1.

1903

November 1916

Edgar H. Sechrist and Miss Rena Shaver were married yesterday afternoon at 5:30 at the courthouse by Judge J.S. Hendrie - June 6, 1906.

Edgar H Sechrist divorced Irene Sechrist in 1908 in Yuma County.

Maybe the Irene Sechrist, a nurse in Stevens County, Washington, married three years but no spouse, 46, born in Iowa is the one.  She rooms with the Andrew Dorhring family.

And in 1930 Irene Sechrist is a "patient" in the W. H. Phillips  home in Azusa California.  She's 68, retired, divorced.

In 1910 Wray Lloyd. E. 17 and Sadie E. 11 Sechrist are with their uncle Thomas and Eva L. Dearmond. and their two daughters.

Lloyd's life was spent exploring the west. He was born in Iowa August 3, 1892, and by the time of the 1900 census, his family owned property in Yuma, Colorado. In 1918, he served in WWI.

At the end of his life September 3, 1920. he was employed as U.S. Surveyor, dying when he fell off a bluff at Defiance Canyon, Apache, Arizona.

He was buried in Inglewood, where his Grandmother Eunice Ellen Warner Sechrist was already buried, and his Grandfather Jacob Sechrist and other relatives followed.
 

In 1910 Stratton, Colorado "Moud" Coad is a "servant"  in the Joseph Collins family - all from Wisconsin.

Maud was born November 16, 1890,  and married Ray Sechrist. 

She's probably the daughter of John and Luella Coad, who were farming in Stratton in 1910, and in Wray in 1920 - John worked at Smith Hardware).  John and Luella are buried in the Wray cemetery.

Merna Fern Sechrist Staples Clayton was born October 28, 1914 in Burlington CO and went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 13, 2011 in Selah WA at 96 'going on 97'. She was the youngest daughter of Ray and Maud Sechrist of Wray CO.  Her early years of education were in a one room country school, graduating from Wray High School in 1932. After graduation she became interested in chiropractic care and started classes at Palmer School of Chiropractic.

It was during this time that she met and married the first love of her life, Francis J. 'Fran' Staples.They were married on May 29, 1937 in Denver.  To this union, three daughters and one son were born.  In 1940 Denver Francis and Fern have Lorilu and Mary Frances, both age one.

In 1943 the Staples family moved to Wray CO where they resided until 1957. In June of 1957 the family moved to Seattle WA. Fran passed away that December 26.  Fern went to work at Cabrini Hospital where she loved her time spent with the nuns and, in particular, Mother Josephine. She bought an apartment house on Capital Hill where she and the children lived for several years.

Through that apartment house Fern met the final love of her life, Gordon W. 'Gordy' Clayton. They were married March 1, 1963 and shared over 47 years together. With this marriage came three more children, two daughters and a son. For many years they ran The Hilltop Motel and Restaurant in Eastgate WA. Fern was famous for her 'home cooking' and wonderful soups. In 1973 they moved to Selah WA where they owned and operated Don's Furniture with their son-in-law, Don Storseth. Fern worked well into her 70s and loved the people she came into contact with in the furniture business. She loved the Mariners and the Seahawks; she never gave up on 'her guys'. Fern and Gordy spent many hours rooting for their teams. Gordon passed away September 26, 2010. His death left a huge hole in her life.

Fern was a woman of great faith and she lived her life so that it was evidenced every day. She believed in the power of prayer and read from her bible daily.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Maud Sechrist; two sisters, Marguerite Sprague, Luella 'Sunny' Harper; a daughter, Patricia Sample; and a grand-daughter, Christina Chrisman. Both husbands, Francis J. 'Fran' Staples and Gordon W. 'Gordy' Clayton also preceded her. Left behind to celebrate her life are her children: Lorilee Staples Glaser (Rowland), Mary Frances Staples Storseth, James Richard 'Dick' Staples (Melanie), Gayle Muree Lagman Creswick (Ken), Gwen Rynveld, Claudia Isham (Gary), James 'Jim' Clayton (Wendy). She was blessed with eighteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

A funeral mass will be said at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 1112 W. Fremont Avenue, Selah WA on May 28, 2011 at 2:30 PM with a memorial and time of sharing to take place between 4 and 6 PM at the Yakima Valley Museum, 2105 Tieton Drive, Yakima WA.

Rowland competed in the Colorado 1949 state spelling contest, placing second.
 

In 1917 Luella Sechrist was a student in the Wray Primary school. - so she was probably born about 1911.

Henry Ray Sechrist registered in Wray, saying he was born March 24, 1895, and was single.

1918

In 1920 Yuma County Henry R. Sechrist is 23, born in Colorado, Maud is 28, Wisconsin, Emma L., 7, Wyoming, Merna T. 4, Colorado, and father ? Edgar H. 54, Iowa.

In 1940 Yuma County Ray and Maude are farming.

Henry Ray Sechrist - Mar 24, 1895 - Mar 2, 1964 and Maud 1890-1967 are buried in the Wray cemetery.

 

 

That might be Joseph A. Boyles in Buffalo County, Nebraska in 1920. He's married to Vera, 26, born in Wisconsin, and they have Andrew J. 4, born in Colorado and Esther L., in Nebraska.

Vera Coad Boyles  August 4, 1892 - Jan 30, 1986 and Joseph Andrew Boyles - Jul 14, 1892 -September 2, 1962 are buried in the Burlington, Colorado cemetery.

1919 "Word has been received in Wray that Ray Sechrist arrived Saturday and expects to be on his way home in a few days."

Sadie K. Sechrist is listed as "Custodian" of the Santa Ynez School Dist Branch, Ventura Co Free Library. in 1919

Sadie E. Sechrist, 21, born in Colorado, is in Imperial County, California in 1920.  She's a grammar school teacher, rooming with the Maurice Avery family

In 1940 Seal Beach, California she's married to Eddy L. Kuferle, manager of a beach resort.

Sadie Eunice Kupferle, born Nov 9, 1898 in Colorado, died July 8, 1996 in San Diego.  Mother's maiden name Heninger, father's surname Sechrist.

“Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heninger received the sad news yesterday, stating that their oldest grandson, Lloyd E. Sechrist, was killed by a fall at Hauck, Arizona. At the time of his death he was 29 years old. He was in Uncle Sam’s service about a year. His occupation was that of a civil engineer. He is survived by his father Ed Sechrist and one brother Ray who is in Wray, Colorado and one sister Sadie E. Sechrist of Los Angeles, Cali.” (Keokuk County News, 9 Sep 1920)
