Eliza J. Hight, Jonathan Hiett
In 1860 Louisa County, Iowa, John A. "Hiatt" is a carpenter born 1832 in Vermont. He and John W. Hiatt 64 a farmer born in New Hampshire and James G. Hiatt, a teacher 26 born in Vermont, are living with Merrill and Nancy Peter, 68 born in Vermonth.
"Heirs of Jonathan Hiett" claimed a quarter in 1, 2N 44W in 1897.
He might be the Jonathan "Hiett" who cash-claimed a quarter in 15, 3N 44W in 1891.

Jhn. A. Hight, age 30, a sawyer born in Vermont, enlisted from Louisa County, Iowa in the 2nd Iowa Infantry.
John A. Hight married Eliza Jane Geiger in Louisa County December 8, 1863.
A.J. Hight wrote the Mills County portion for the Iowa Agricultural Society in 1873.
In 1880 Mills County, Iowa, A. J. Hight is farming 47, born in Vermont, Eliza 37 Indiana, have Freddie 7 and son A.C. 3, both born in Iowa.
A.J. Hight was a Past Grand of the Mills County I.O.O.F.
1886 Glenwood "A.J. Hight has sold his abstract books to Wickham & Woral. He will devote his entire attention to his interests in Colorado."

BUT the Mills county obituary index has "Capt. A. J. Hight" dying March 15, 1894.
January 1898 Mills County "Case entitled Eliza J. Hight
and I. R. Hight vs. Mills county, in which the county is sued for
$944 with interest at 6 per cent, from the time of the filing
of the petition. In the proceedings of the board of supervisors
published in the OPINION of Jan. 6, appears this entry among
the bills: A. J. Hight and S. C. Osborn, commission on swamp
lands sales, claimed $562.69, not allowed. The plaintiffs allege
that in 1884 the board of supervisors entered into a contract with
I. R. Hight, of Chicago, instructing him to collect from the
general government the money due the county on swamp
and overflowed lands, and agreed to pay him 50 percent of the
sums he secured. Hight in turn arranged with A. J. Hight to pay
him three-fifths of the commission if he would perform part of
work. They collected and turned over to the county $1,875,08
and received but $300.10 in commissions, when $937.81 should
have been paid them.
S. C. Osborn was county auditor at the time the contract
was made and Mr. Hight was his deputy. Mr. Osborn has
recently placed upon record 'power of attorney" from Hight,
enabling him to proceed to the collection of the claim in
company with Mrs. Hight, the widow of A. J. Hight,
who was concerned in the collections.
At the last meeting of the board the claim presented by
Mr. Osborn and Mrs. Hight was denied and the suit
is the result. It is a matter which has long been in
dispute and its termination is eagerly looked forward
to by the plaintiffs, who hope to receive the judgment."

and Jonathan 13. (wonder if he went by "Don" to distinguish himself from his father._

November 1898 Wray "Some relatives of L. D. Hiett, from West Virginia are new arrivals. They occupy one of Col. Hitchongs houses."
In 1900 Laird, Lorenzo D. Hiett is a farm laborer, 42, born in West Virginia, living alone.
So is L. Dow Hiett 1854-1933 # 119872699, with Eleanor G. 1873-1955 # 119872649.
Eleanor was living alone in Allegany County, Maryland, widowed, in 1940.
September 1909 "Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hiett and Myron Cowgill
left for their respective homes in Springfield, West Va., and Washington D. C.
Mr. Cowgill will stop in Ohio to visit a brother. Mr. Hiett and Mr. Cowgill
are nephews of Dow Hiett south of town."
In 1910 Morgan County, West Virginia, Lorenzo Dow Hiett is 56,
farming, married one year to Eleanor G. 7 (her second marriage) She was born in Virginia, and had one childing dyiing.
In 1920 Morgan County, Lorenzo is farming, 64, with Eleanor 47. With them is Earl R. Horrill 17 born in West Virginia.
In 1930 Morgan County, Lorenzo is still farming, age 76, with Eleanor 58.
In the same cemetery as his father is L. Dow Hiett 1854-1933 # 119872699, with Eleanor G. 1873-1955 # 119872649.
Eleanor was living alone in Allegany County, Maryland, widowed, in 1940.

Ellen Montague married Samuel Nisley in Knox County, Illinois

Jennie Nisley is in York County, Nebraska in 1885, age 16, with Samuel 48 and Ellen 40. Frank is 23k , Minnie 20, Emma 19, Jennie 16, Kae 13, Millie 11, John 9, Laura 6, and Bessie 4.
Samuel 1837-1899 is buried in Spokane # 68070360. So is Ellen (Montague) 1845-1923
"PERKINS, Ellen A.- Passed away, November 23 at W403 Knox avenue, at the age of 78 years. She had been a resident of Spokane for the last 32 years, and is survived by three sons. Frank Nisley, Portland: William Nisley, Hi?lard, and John Nisley of Los Angeles, also five daughters, Alta Olson, Illinois: Minnie Bower, N.D., Kate Jefferson, San Francisco, Laura Horr, Spokane, Bessie English, St. Joe, Idaho."
Jonathan Hiett, 29, born in West Virginia to Jonathan and Margaret Hiett, married Jennie Nisley on September 3, 1887 in Arborville, Nebraska.
Jennie was 18, born in Illinois to Samuel and Ellen A. Nisley.
FindaGrave # 168640999 has Jennie with a burial unknown.
Earl Heitt is with his grandmother Ellen Nisley in 1900 Spokane, Washingon, born Sept 1888 in Colorado.
Their son, Jesse Earl Hiett, born about 1888, married Edna Blanche McMilen in Platt County, Illinois on July 29, 1915.
Jesse was born September 12, 1888 at Wray Colorado, and registered for WWI in Green Valley, Illinois, teaching school, married.

was held in the county court. The deceased was one of the old settlers in our county."

Jesse was a pedestrian hit by a motorist, dying December 19, 1931 in Indianapolis, to be buried in Platt County # 8322851.
" Earl hated his first name and from an early age went by 'Earl', his middle name.
His early life is a little unclear, but we know he was orphaned at age 2 in Wray CO.
He then was sent to his maternal grandparents (Nisley) in Spokane WA until age 12.
He was then sent back to Illinois when his grandfather died to live with an uncle.
The uncle refused to let him go on to school past 8th grade, so the story is he
ran away from home.
A high school principal took him in, and he not only finished
high school, but also went on to Illinois State Normal College in Normal, IL
where he graduated around 1910. He met his future wife Edna McMillen at a
'taffy pull' there. he became a schoolteacher, and he and Edna married in 1915.
In 1916, he is listed as the principal of Moweaqua High School,
just south of Dekatur, IL. He was also principal of Green Valley High School
when he was drafted into the Navy in WWI.
When he got out of the Navy, his father in law Tom McMillen talked him into returing to Deland IL to become an insurance agent and work in the local bank. Son Max was born in 1921, daughter Martha in 1923. Towards the end of the 1920's he became an agent for Home Insurance Co. of New York, with a norhern Indiana territory. He did so well that he was promoted to director for the state of Colorado.
Tragically, after a meeting at Indianapolis on Dec. 18, 1931, Jesse Earl Hiett was killed while crossing street by car driven by 16-year old Leo Louck in the evening fog. Newspapers indicated he stepped out from between or behind a parked car. The young driver was found not a fault.
His death sent a shock through Piatt county. Earl was so well known and respected. Of course his family was devastated, and their lives all forever changed from that moment on.

Fred A. Haight married Ella Bailey in 1895 Mason City, Iowa, saying his parents were S.C. Haight and Jane McKersen.
John A. Hight received an invalid pension in 1891 for service in H, 2nd Iowa Infantry from Colorado, and then Eliza J. Hight received a widow's pension in 1894 from Iowa.
"Hight, John A. Residence Columbus City, nativity Vermont. Mustered May 27, 1861 in the 2nd Iowa Infantry Co. H. Discharged for disability April 2, 1862. Buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Mills County, Iowa"
Sept 1890 "secured for this district the United States Marshalship and Supevisorship of the Census. Both of them went to old Soldiers, Capt Hight and Dave Miller." Judge Reed.
"Capt. A.J. Hight" obituary is in the Mills County newspaper of March 15, 1894.
But the application for a headstone says he died December 11, 1898, with the stone placed in Glenwood, Iowa. That's the date on the FindaGrave listing # 119791425.
Eliza "widow of Alfred J. Hight, deceased " proved up a quarter in 29, 2N 45W in 1895. This bordered the railroad tracks for a mile.

July 1898 "Mrs. E. J. Hight of Glenwood has just donated her private library consisting
of 50 volumes to the Glenwood public library. They are carefully selected books and are
first class in point of binding and subject matter.
Our book reading public should extend a vote of thanks to Mrs. Hight for her generosity."
August 1899 "Mrs. Eliza J. Hight now of Chicago has sold her residence on Chestnut street to Mr.s. Carrie F. Milard for $1800. The poperty comprises a lot and a half in block 63 and is located in one of the choicest residence potions of the city."
May 17, 1900 "Mrs. E.J. Hight is here from Chicago, for a visit with friends."
In 1910 Los Angeles, Eliza J. Hight is a roomer, widowed, 66, wtih Ira and Mildred Cochrane.
Eliza's pension ceased upon her death in July 1913.
