John Hackworth
In 1870 Green County, Wisconsin, John Hackworth is 19, a farm laborer for his brother Alexander 27. Mother Elizabeth 59 Kentucky and sister Melissa 22 Wisconsin are with them.
(Alex married Catharine Morton - on the same page in 1870 - and in 1880 they're in Seward County, Nebraska. Some of Catherine's Morton kin also came to Yuma County. )
In 1880 Green County, Elizabeth is 69, widowed, Melissa 29, and John 28.
Elizabeth's brother Urias Morton had moved to Yuma County, so John probably came because of his uncle.
November 1908 "John Hackworth came up from Benkcelman last night to mingle with the boys. "
In 1910 Wray, on Railway Street, John Hackworth is a poultry salesman, 50 born in Wisconsin, single, boarding wtih the Oscar Shields hotel.
September 1910 "Simon Dow is a liar himself even if he is the editor of the Wray Gazette.
He made the statement that John Hackworth, Shields old bartender was in jail at Akron.
Now thoro wasn't anything to it only a big lie."
January 8, 1914 "The home of Charley Yenter was the scene of a pleasant gathering
on New Years day. When the guests had assembled a liberal supply of peanuts and candy
were served, after which John Hackworth entertained the company with choice violin
selections, including Leather Breeches. Dinner was served at 1:30 and ranged from
chicken to duck and turkey and back again, with all the trimmings. Mrs. Yenter,
herself an excellent cook, was assisted by her daughter, Minnie,
and Mrs. Margaret VanHorn, After dinner Mr. Yenter and his sons provided such
entertainment in the way of games that the day passed all too quickly.
Sorry you weren't there, for there's nothing like a Sand Hill dinner.
John proved up a quarter in 28, and another in 33, 2N 45W in 1916. The railroad went throught he middle of the section 28 quarter.
March 1917 "John Hackworth, our old Eckley friend, was down Tuesday and made the
Rattler a pleasant call. John says he has been residing on a farm for several years,
but that he now resides in the metropolis of Eckley."
John 1851-1922 is buried in Eckley # 53005852.
March 2, 1922 "On account of a well-developed case of blood-poisoning in his right leg,
John Hackworth was taken to a Denver hospital Tuesday in hope that with good care
and medical treatment his leg may not have to be amputated.
Mr. Hackworth has been bothered quite badly for several years with varicose veins
and those have gradually but surely been enlarging and getting worse until now he has a bad cbbo of blood-poison, Tito Tribune aincoroly hopos that Mr. Mnclnvorth may bo permanently benefited nnd that ho will noon be
able to return to his duties as janitor at the grade school building. — Eckley Tribune,
March 9, 1922 "John Hackworth, a former longtime resident of this city,
but more recently a citizen of Eckley, died at a hospital in Denver Sunday,
the direct result of blood-poison superinduced by varicose veins.
The body was brought back to Eckley on Monday, and Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock
funeral services were held. A number of Wray men drove to Eckley to attend the funeral.
Mr. Hackworth had attended to his duties as usual as custodian of the public school
building at Eckley until about a week ago, when his condition became so serious that
he was obliged to go to Denver for hospital treatment.
He lived only a few days after reaching the hospital. Mr. Hackworth was a man of 60
odd years, perhaps. He was a likeable gentleman and his many friends all over Yuma
county will learn with regret that ho has crossed the bar."
