William Gurein Fitzgerald
William Fitzgerald and Margaret P. Carl married January 19, 1869 in Fremont County, Iowa.

From a newspaper clipping with no attribution or date, the obverse of the clipping has some news about coal mining and wages and a pending conference on the 20th of miners and mine owners from Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico to be held in Pueblo:
"A telegram on last Saturday from Wray to the G.A.R. Post at Yuma announced the death of our esteemed Comrade, William Fitzgerald of heart and lung trouble at his home south of Robb. The deceased has resided in Yuma county a number of years and was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place at Wray on Sunday and interment in the Wray cemetery."
As with most genealogy, there is always more to learn about one's ancestors. What I know about William G. Fitzgerald so far is that he is found in an 1880 book of Fremont County, Iowa pioneers who farmed around Percival, Iowa. This Bio states that he was a Union soldier who participated in the Sioux wars and was wounded twice by arrow and that he was a Union soldier during the Civil War serving with Company F of the 15th Iowa Volunteers. I have been unable to confirm his Indian War service, but there is considerable information about his Civil War service. He was wounded at the Battle of Corinth and the Battle of Atlanta.
Less certain are the circumstances of his coming to the United States. The Iowa Pioneer Bio says he came from Limerick, Ireland with his parents when he was 12, but some relatives say his father died in Ireland and his mother, brother and sister came from Ireland in 1848 and settled in New York.
William G. Fitzgerald married Margaret Pauline Carl (1852-1902) in Percival, Iowa in 1867. They had ten children:

In 1910 Richardson County, Nebraska, "Robe" G. Fitzgerald is 40, "Minie" L. 27, and they have Ruth E., 4.

In 1920 Richardson County, Ruth Fitzgerald is 13, stepdaughter to Walter Orr 43 and Minnie Orr 37. Minnie L. Orr is widowed in 1930 Richardson County, no occupation, living on Wilson Street in Falls City.
In 1930 Camarillo, California, Robert E. Fitzgerald is a cook, living with David D. Hurt. Both are widowed, 60 years old. In 1940 Modesto, California, Robert is 70, widowed, living with brother William 52 and his wife Clara, 54.
Robert Emmet Fitzgerald, born Dec 4, 1869 in Iowa, died Jan 15, 1952 in Santa Clara County California, mother's maiden name Carl.
About Robert E. (Bob) Fitzgerald, I find a note that he was born 1869 died
1952 and then "Ruth Lenth-San Jose". Another note from Gene Fitzgerald's wife,
Clara (1966) says "Bob married Minnie Reed in Falls City and that they had one
child, Ruth who is married to Verlis Taylor - (now) - Her 4th marriage. She had
one daughter by husband 1 (Betty) and another daughter by husband 3 by the name
of Leuth (Nancy). Now married and (divorced) from Jerry DeVale - 2 children a
boy and a girl. Lives in San Jose." So I guess Bob Fitzgerald married Minnie
Reed in Falls City and had a daughter Ruth who was married several times and had
several children.

3. Mary Elizabeth (1871-1939) married George Walter Snell (the Colorado marriage records have George W. SUELL, 26, marrying Mary E. Fitzgerald, 21, September 11, 1892, the ceremony performed by Austin Faher, Catholic priest of Brighton, at Wray.) George and Mary 71053026 are buried in Whitley County, Indiana.
4. Nora Agatha (1873-1939) married Joshua Albert Meek
5. Nelley ____ (1878-1909) married Jim Hurt (In 1900 they're in Falls City. James a day laborer born Sep 1874 in Nebraska, and Nellie E. born Feb 1878 in Iowa. Nellie died in Falls City November 22, 1909, and is buried in the Steele Cemetery there. In 1910 Falls City James said he was widowed, 35, born in Kansas. With him are Alma 9 and Alfred 7. James 51 and Alfred 17 are in Oxnard, Ventura County, California in 1920 )
| November 14, 1931 Oxnard - David Hurt, of Somis received word that
his brother James Hurt of Portland, Oregon had died. His only
daughter, Mrs. Ed Scholle left Friday afternoon for the north where
funeral arrangements await her and her husband. The deceased, 59
years of age, a widower for twenty years, passed away in his sleep.
He leaves three brother, besides Mr. Hurt. They are J.H.
Hurt also of Portland, Chas. X. Hurt of Santa Barbara, Wm. Hurt of
Oklahoma. In 1880 Andrew County Missouri, Thomas 55 and Maria 34 Hurt have Stephen R. 16, Charles E. 13, David S. 10, James F. 8, John 6, Louis 4, and William six months. =========================== Oregon death records have James Hurt dying November 12, 1931, spouse Nellie. |

Edward H. Scholle Jr.,
life-long county resident died early Sunday afternoon at
a local hospital following a long illness. He was born
Jan. 26, 1900 on the family ranch in the Springville
area, and has operated the Scholle Ranch for many years.
He was the son of Edward Scholle, believed to be the
last of the Ventura County pioneers who came from
Germany in the early 1880's to settle in the Springville
ranching area. Mr. Scholle is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alma Scholle of Camarillo; two daughters, Mrs. Robert E. Pearson of Oxnard and Mrs. Dale James of Camarillo; a sister, Mrs. Peter Connelly of Oxnard, and five grandchildren. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Oxnard Council 750. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the James A. Reardon Mortuary. Requiem Mass will be said at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of Magdalene Church, Camarillo, and entombment will be in the Santa Clara Mausoleum. - SOURCE: Press-Courier (Oxnard, California) Monday, August 15, 1960 Edward Henry Scholle married Alma Mae Hurt in Ventra County September 27, 1922. | OXNARD COURIER, FRIDAY, MAY 24, 1918, ACCIDENT ARE FATAL Joseph Hurt, son of D. D. Hurt, of Camarillo, passed away last evening at about 9:40 o'clock at the Santa Paula sanitarium, death resulting from injuries received in an automobile accident in Santa Paula last Sunday afternoon. The young man would have been 18 years of age in August. He is survived by his father, one sister, Miss Hazel Hurt, and one brother, Donald Hurt. Two uncles, Charles Hurt of Santa Barbara and James Hurt of Oxnard, and two cousins, Alma Hurt and Alfred Hurt, children of James Hurt, also survive.. The accident in which young Hurt received fatal injuries, took place last Sunday when the stripped Ford car in which he and Raymond Rolls of Santa Paula were riding was hit by a Ford car driven by a young man named Martin. The accident occurred at a blind corner. Hurt's car was rolled over twice. Mr. Hurt was seriously affected by the death of his son and twice had fainting spells. |
7. John J. (Joseph?) (1882-1952) never married. John J. Fitzgerald was also a navy commander in WW2 finishing out his career commanding an Oil Supply ship in the Pacific.
8. Lois Olivia ((1885-1931) my grandmother (April 21, 1905 Wray Gazette "Miss Lois Fitzgerald, from west of town about fourteen miles, was in the city Wednesday, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. McKean.") Also in 1905 "A number of our teachers went up to Akron Sunday to attend the District Normal to be held there for two weeks. Those going from here were R.W. Thorn, Anna Lawrence, Lois Fitzgerald, Miss McClure, Lulu Goodwin, Beryl Lepper, Irene Chapin, Miss Dorman, Ora Elliot, Carrie Staininger and S.S. Dow."
1906 "Miss Fitzgerald, who has been teaching school near Wray for the past year, departed for the west last Saturday."
Lois Fitzgerald married J. H. Fetters May 5, 1906, recorded in Morgan County. The ceremony was performed by Reverend J. A. Dean of Brush, Colorado.

Wiggins, Colorado which is where my father was born and they had a farm. L to R Glen,

William Eugene ((1888-1952) – Gene Fitzgerald son of William and Margaret had a son John Allison Fitzgerald who was a very decorated submarine commander during WW2- he became a Japanese POW and later the subject of the current book "Unbroken". Fitzgerald graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1931. In World War II he was the Commanding Officer of the Submarine U.S.S. Gar during her first war patrol starting February 2, 1942. While on this patrol over 10,000 tons of enemy shipping was sunk. His next command was the Submarine U.S.S. Grenadier, and on it's fifth war patrol on April 23, 1943, the Grenadier while in a dive was struck by an enemy bomb which struck and crippled the vessel. The Grenadier settled on the bottom of the ocean at 267 feet. Fitzgerald and crew fought courageously for twenty two hours to save his fatally damaged ship. He had to surface due to ongoing fires, and after surfacing he mustered all the remaining fire power for the possibility of an air attack and probable destruction of his ship. As the Japanese ships moved in Fitzgerald ordered his crew to abandon ship. He and his crew became prisoners of war and served almost two and a half years in prisoner of war camps before being released on September 2, 1945. He would win the Navy Cross for his conduct in resisting capture and the scuttling of his ship prior to the Japanese capturing it. In addition to his Navy Cross Fitzgerald was awarded the Silver Star and the Prisoner of War Medal. Fitzgerald retired as a Rear Admiral.
Modesto Bee - September 22, 1966- Services for William Eugene Fitzgerald of Lodi and formerly of Modesto, who died Tuesday in Lodi, were held at 2 o'clock today in the chapel of the Gierhart Wells Funeral Home in Lodi. Entombment followed in the Cherokee Mausoleum there. Fitzgerald operated a motel in Modesto for many years, retiring in 1946. He was a past noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Wildey Chapter, in Modesto. Survivors are his widow. Clara: a son. Rear Adm. John A. Fitzgerald, USN ret., of Chevy Chase, Md.; three daughters, Mrs. E. J. Mulqueeney of Livermore. Mrs. Eugenia Wit-hers of Stockton and Mrs. Francis Wilson of Lodi; eight grand children and three great grand- children

It appears the Fitzgerald family moved to the Robb area around 1888/9 where some of the daughters found and married their husbands. The Snell’s moved to Mound City, MO. in 1893 while the Meek’s stayed in the area (Eckley) birthing 6 children. I would assume Kathy would have been born in or around Eckley, but I have not found any record yet. After William died, Margaret and Kathy both moved to Falls City, Nebraska to be near a married daughter (Susan).
I just obtained a photo of the family taken I think shortly after he died.

I am trying to figure out more about the family's time in the area, but it
appears two of his daughters married while there. George Snell and Mary
Fitzgerald left before William died, but I can't find much about the Meek that
married his other daughter. I think they remained in the area. I will get
something together when I flesh this out a little better.
I assume Napoleon Meek was related to Al Meek. I notice that there were a
couple of Snell parcels and the Meek parcel close by, so another assumption
would be that the Fitzgerald's were somewhere close by. I also notice a Hicks
parcel in the same area and in the Kit Carson marriages there is a Mary Fetters
marriage record to a Hicks as well as a remarriage of Caspar Fetters to Anna
Haines. Caspar Francis Fetters was my GGfather, Mary was his daughter and sister
to my Gfather Joseph Henry Fetters. I just read a family letter that said Lois
Olivia Fitzgerald left Falls City and returned to Wray to teach school, which is
how she met Joseph Henry Fetters. They married in Brush, CO. and I was always
told he was working as a
cowboy and she was a school marm.
So many loose ends to put together!
Wray March 8, 1902 "Mrs. Fitzgerald of Falls City, Nebraska, who resided west of Wray for a number of years, died at her home February 23, 1902."
Steele Cemetery, Falls City, Nebraska records have Robert Fitzgerald purchasing the lot, and Margaret Fitzgerald, born in Arkansas April 1, 1852, died February 21, 1902, and was buried from the Baptist Church February 23, 1902.

W. A. Carl is a son of William and Margaret (Chashman) Carl, who were of Scotch
and English descent, respectively, and born in New York State, the former in the
year 1822, and the latter in 1831. The father was engaged in farming for a
number of years after his marriage, and moved to Iowa in 1857, where he entered
land and resided until 1865, at which
time he moved to Gentry County, Mo. In 1873 he again made a change of residence,
this time moving to Kansas, where he remained until 1884, and from that time up
to the time of his death, November 7, 1884, resided in Barton County on a farm
of 160 acres he had purchased near Milford. His marriage was blessed with eight
children, seven of whom are living; W. A., Charles H.; Adelia, the deceased wife
of John M. Kennedy; Julia, wife of Pierce Smith; J. T. a farmer of Kansas;
George L.; Mary E., wife of Joseph Brodist; and Edward, residing in Kansas City,
Mo. Mr. Carl was a Democrat in politics. His wife, who is yet living, and
resides with her son Charles, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Because one Ancestry tree says Margaret Adelia Carl was William Carl's daughter, and the history confirms Adelia died, this is probably not the Margaret Pauline Carl that married William Fitzgerald

In 1880 Fremont County, Iowa, William Fitzgerald is 48, born in Ireland, farming. He's married to "M." 28, born Arkansas. They have Robert 10, Mary 8, Nora 6, and Nellie 2, all born in Iowa.
In 1885 Fremont County, Iowa - 69 44, section 26, the northeast forty acres, Wm. Fitzgerald is 53, married to Margaret 32. They have Robt. Emmit 15, Mary E. 13, Norah 11, Lillie 7, Susan B. 4, John James 2 and Lois O. newborn.
In 1900 Falls City, Richardson County, Nebraska, Margaret born April 1852 in Arkansas, is widowed. She's had ten kids, eight living. Robert born Dec 1869, John Oct 1882, Louis Feb 1885, and Eugene January 1888, all kids born in Iowa, are with her.
William Eugene Fitzgerald, born January 19, 1887 in Percival Iowa, was in Craig, Holt County Missouri for registration, with a wife and four children.

| That Catherine is the youngest daughter of William and Margaret
Fitzgerald. She was about 6 when she died from T.B. She was born about a
year before William died. I assumed she was born in Robb, but have not found a record yet. The family left Percival 1888/1889 and arrived in Robb. Catherine is born 1893? I have found some letters from 1962 and 1966 when my aunt Mildred was working on the family tree. One is from Almond Rouse Meek and there are several from Gene Fitzgerald and his wife Clara. They indicate that a year before William died, the family moved to Mound City, MO to be near Mary and the Snell family. My sense is they went as a group with the Snell's. There are notes in the margins that say that "Father and Bro. Bob stayed on the 'homestead' ". After William died, Margaret and the Family moved to Falls City, Neb. It could be Catherine was born in Mound City, MO. Saying the family moved with Margaret must mean the remaining family as there is reference from Almon Meek that his mother Nora could not attend her mother's funeral because she was birthing his brother Joe. He also says he and the rest of his family (J.A. Meek's) moved to Indiana in 1907 and spent some time with his grandparents there, went briefly to Ohio and then wound up in Wisconsin where he remained until he retired to Florida. He refers to Catherine as Cassie and I have seen it Cathy and Kathy and Katherine as well as Catherine in all of these notes I am wading through. Another note indicates Cassie and Kathy are different children and that Cassie died as a baby (perhaps that is the first born Margaret that died as an infant). I think Lois, Gene and Cathy would have been the remaining family moving with Margaret and then possibly the eldest adult son Robert joined her after William died. Robert wound up getting William's pension after Margaret died and I assume that was to look after Lois and Gene after Catherine and Margaret died. I do have a photo of I think John Allison Fitzgerald and his mother Clara Fitzgerald and (for sure) Margaret Virginia Meek standing on what I think is the Fitzgerald's porch in California taken in 1928 by I think Gene Fitzgerald. This Meek was not born in Robb, but probably in Wisconsin in 1911. |
