Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Charles E. Merritt, Sherwood Seely Merritt,  Cora E. Merritt

Sherwood was born July 16, 1838 in New York, and died in Marshall County, Illinois May 5, 1920.  Annas Susan Kimber was born August 30, 1844 in Putnam County, Illinois and died in Marshall County Illinois Feb 7, 1926

January 2, 1879  Born in Henry township, Dec. 22, a daughter to Sherwood Merritt

 

In 1880 Marshall County, Illinois Sherwood "Meritt" is 42, married to Anna,S. 36.  They have Charles E. 16, Cora E. 14, Rogers S. 12, William M. 9,  and Julia M. 1

Charles proved up a quarter in 26, 4N 48W in 1894, and Sherwood did a timber claim south of that in 1901.  Cora had cash-claimed a quarter in 1891 in section 11, and in 1912 "Cora E. (Merritt) Kough" a timber claim next to it.

In 1900 Marshall County S.S. is 61, A.S. is 55, and they have daughter Matilda J. Hatcher 21 and her husband R.J. and son Robert F. .

In 1920 Marshall County "Shermwood" is 81, and Anna is 75.

Charles E. Merritt is in Henry County, Illinois in 1900..  He was born Jun 1863, Grace Oct 1869, both in Illinois.  They have Pearl, July 1890, Anna F. Nov 1891, Charles S. Dec 1893 (these three born in Colorado), Mary Dec 1895 Illinois, and Grace July 1898 Illinois.

In 1910 they're in Carroll County, Illinois, with Anna, Charles, Mary, Grace - and have added Edson 8, John 5, and Willard 2.

Charles 1864 - 1955 and Grace Elizabeth Boda 1869 - October 7, 1945- Merritt are buried in Mendota, LaSalle County

Charles Sherwood Merritt, when registering, said he was born December 14, 1893 at Yuma Colo, and was a bookkeeper in Chicago.

When registering for WWII, he also said Yuma - and he was working for the Fuller Brush Company in Rockford, Winn County. Illinois.

Pearl C. Hepner, age 77, died December 1967 - obituary printed in Valparaiso newspaper Dec 23, 1967.

Cora E. Merritt married W.J. Kough October 11, 1896. 

J.S. Kough was a member of the 1895 Yuma G.A.R. Post, for service as a private in the 125th Pennsylvania Infantry.
This would likely be W.J.'s father John Spanaugle Kough 18421920.

John is buried in Cambria County, Pennsylvania # 61002431.

Mary J. Kough 1844-1917 # 61002436 woulbe be his mother.

February 1900 Brush items "W.J. Kough received the sad news of the death of hisonly brother in Philadelphia.

In 1900 Morgan County William, September 1870 in Pennsylvania is a farm laborer, Cora M. Feb 1866 (age 24?) in Illinois, has had one child, one living - but none listed.


That must be the Arthur W., 11, in the 1910 Morgan County census.  William J. and Cora M. have him, Opal A., 9, and Nellie E., 5.

Wm. J. 1870 - 1935 and Cora M. 1866-1960 Kough are buried in Fort Morgan
