John Lund
John Lund proved up a quarter in 6, 5N 47W, Yuma County, in 1917.
July 29, 1942 "John Lund had the misfortune to hurt his hand very severely last week while working on his windmill. ONne of his fingers had to be amputated as a result.
In January 1946 he contributed his pension bonus check to the Haxtun hospital project.
John Lund 1874-1946 is buried in Haxtun # 58673629.
John Lund, a resident of the Haxtun community for almost fifty years, passed away at the Good Samaritan hospital in Sterling Friday evening, March 29, at the age of 72 years. Mr. Lund was born in Denmark, February 22, 1874, and at the age of 21 years he came to America, locating in Soldier, Iowa. Two years later he came to Colorado and took up a homestead 15 miles south and one mile west of Haxtun where he lived the greater part of his life. A year and a half ago, he moved to Haxtun when failing health compelled him to give up his farming operations. About a week before his death he was taken to the Sterling hospital for care and treatment where death claimed him. Mr. Lund was a kindly gentleman, a good neighbor and a solid citizen. He was interested in the welfare and growth of the little community that he had watched grow from the early 1900s. When the hospital movement was begun in Haxtun, Mr. Lund at once saw the need for such a project and gave it his full support. When he received his bonus pension check the first of the year he donated the full amount to the hospital fund. He was the oldest of a family of 13 children and the last survivor. He is mourned by a cousin and four nephews in South Dakota, a nephew and a niece in Iowa, one nephew in Washington and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Radford Funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Otto Laursen officiating. Interment was at the Haxtun cemetery. Following is the obituary: John Lund, son of John and Johanna Lund, was born in Hjorring, Denmark, February 22, 1874 and passed away March 29, 1946 at the Good Samaritan hospital in Sterling at the age of 72 years and five weeks. He lived in Denmark until 21 years of age when he came to America, locating in Soldier, Iowa. He lived there two years and then took up a homestead 15 miles south and one mile west of Haxtun and lived on that homestead the remainder of his life, excepting one and one-half years which was spent in Haxtun. He was a good neighbor, and loved to mingle with people. He was the oldest and last of a family of thirteen, 11 boys and two girls. Four brothers came to America. He leaves to mourn his departure, one cousin and four nephews in South Dakota, one nephew in Iowa, a niece and a nephew in Iowa and a nephew in Washington state. *NOTE - From John's nephew, Frank Lund: "I was with John when he died in Sterling. The obit is wrong. It should be born 21 Feb 1876. He was not the oldest [more like in the middle]. He was the son of Jens K. & Mette Marie Lund - born in Bjerghby, Hjorring County, Denmark. I made all the funeral arrangements for him. Just a kid guessing dates, etc." |
