| April 12, 1905 (sic) A Happy Marriage – At the residence of the bride, on Sunday morning, at 11:00 o’clock, Irvan G. Stephen (maybe a transcription error ?) was married to Miss Ida Green, Geo. Patterson, officiating Justice. After the ceremony the justice lead the way to the dining room, where the guests put their feet under tales which were groaning under a load of good things edible, where good nature reigned supreme, and enjoyed themselves as old timers but could do. Sixty-four partook of the excellent dinner served by the mother of the bride, with the corps of assistants composed of friends and neighbors. After dinner the guests enjoyed instrumental and vocal music, jokes, conundrums, talks on good roads, politics and religion. The bride is the eldest daughter of J.W. and S.J. Green, who furnished a good part of the instrumental music. Miss Goldie Rickey also added thereto. The groom is a young man to the manor born of sterling qualities, and the son of Ira Stephenson, a farmer. After enjoying themselves to the full the guests quietly dispersed, but not before wishing the happy pair a "bon voyage" o’er life’s tempestuous seas. |

| Earl Raymond Stephenson, 88, Springfield, died April 7, 2009. He was born November 17, 1920, in rural Willow Springs, Mo., to Irvan G. and Ida Belle Green Stephenson. He attended Burnham and Willow Springs schools before graduating in May, 1942, from Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar. Earl began his military career immediately following graduation in the Engineer Center, Camp Clairborne, La., and continued in Engineer construction, first in Iran for two years, then in Germany and France before he was discharged from active service. Earl was active in the Engineer Reserves in Kansas City before he became an assistant instructor and chief clerk of the Kansas City Army Reserve headquarters. Upon his appointment as warrant officer in March, 1952, he was transferred to Hq, No. Dakota National Guard in Bismarck. In May, 1952, he was transferred to the 28th Inf. Div., Goeppingen, Germany, and was assigned to the G-1 Section. He handled all receipts and disbursements of funds for the division's athletic teams and then moved to the Inspector General office as an investigator before his transfer back to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he was assigned the secretary to the Chief of Staff, Louisiana Maneuvers. At the conclusion of the Louisiana maneuvers in 1958, Earl attended the Intelligence School in Baltimore and upon his graduation, moved to Kansas City, Mo., for his first assignment as a special agent. Later, he held assignments in Seoul, Korea; Lincoln, N.E.; Heidelberg, Germany; and Little Rock, Ark. In Heidelberg, he was assigned to the Intelligence Division and appointed the case review officer of loyalty and suitability cases. He was appointed the commander of his unit in Little Rock and was awarded the US Army Commendation Medal for his work at USAREUR and Commendation Medal with cluster for his leadership as an agent/commander in Little Rock upon retirement in September, 1969. Earl took time during his military career to assist Army chaplains. If his assignments were near a Baptist church, he would join with the group and take on leadership responsibilities associated with Sunday School, Training Union and Missions. In Seoul, Korea, he was the educational director for Memorial Baptist Church. He was an ordained Baptist deacon for 60 years. Earl was much loved by his relatives because of his genealogical research. In 1978, he became active in the Ozarks Genealogical Society and in December, 2008, he retired from an active role of leadership. He was the library's building manager when he retired. Earl was avid bowler while in the military and when he retired to Springfield, he was active with a number of teams in the Springfield Men's Bowling Association, carrying a 183 book average and from 1975-1995, he was the bowling coordinator for First Baptist Church, where he had over 300 adult bowlers organized into teams and bowling on the church's lanes. In December, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., Earl married Geneve Childress, a college sweetheart, and they were parents of two children, Janie Eileen and Robert (Bob) Earl. In December, 1999, they observed their 54th wedding anniversary. Earl was preceded in death by his wife; father and mother; two brothers, Clyde and Leonard; five sisters, Grace (Lowe), Hazel (Frazee), Alice (Medley), Bertha (Cobbs) and Pearl. He is survived by his brother Wayne and his wife, Helen, of Willow Springs; a daughter Janie McKown; a son Bob and wife, Jamie; five grandchildren, Tonya, Kayla and her husband, Mark Page, and Jill and her husband, Matthew Crowley. Earl was a great-grandfather to Jc and Luke Page. Visitation will be held in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, April 13, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on April 14, 2009, at 10 a.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, with burial to follow at 1 p.m., in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. |
| Mr. Wayne Stephenson of Willow Springs, passed away on Thursday,
January 3, 2013 while at the Willow Care Nursing Home in Willow Springs.
Born on April 27, 1926 in Hutton Valley, Missouri to Irvan and Ida
(Green) Stephenson, he was 86 years old. Mr. Stephenson proudly served
his country in the US Army during World War II where he served in the
Philippines and Korea. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for
meritorious service. On January 17, 1945, he married Helen Boyer in
Salem, Arkansas. He later worked for the Missouri State Highway
Department retiring in 1987 after thirty-five years of dedicated
service. He was a member of the Ingomar Lodge No. 536 A.F. & M. in
Willow Springs where he was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the
Scottish Rite, and the Shriners. Wayne was an avid St. Louis Cardinals
fan and was an honorary dugout coach alongside Tony La Russa during the
St. Louis Cardinals game with the Springfield Cardinals on April 2,
2005. He loved to fish and hunt and spent many hours enjoying the
outdoors while teaching his sons how to be safe, successful hunters and
fisherman. Wayne will be missed by his family and friends. He was
preceded in death by Helen, his loving wife of 66 years, three brothers;
Clyde, Earl and Leonard; five sisters; Lillian Stephenson, Grace Lowe,
Hazel Frazee, Alice Medley and Berta Cobbs.
Mr. Stephenson is survived by his three sons, Mike Stephenson and his wife Clara of Jefferson City; Greg Stephenson and his wife Vicky of Springfield; and Terry Stephenson and his wife Jeanine of Effingham, IL. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Julie Gugel, Caleb Stephenson, Tony Stephenson, Veronica Aichele, Wayne Stephenson, Lauren Stephenson, and Lindsey Stephenson; four great grandchildren; Michaela Gugel, Eliana Aichele, Alex Aichele, and Gaddie Stephenson. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM with the funeral service starting at 12:00 PM at the Willow Funeral Home, located at 106 E. Third Street in Willow Springs. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Willow Springs City Cemetery. |
