| Decatur County Journal December 19, 1906 John Piper, the subject of this sketch, was born October the 11, 1833 in Columbiana County, Ohio, and died at his home in Eden Township, December 5, 1906, aged 73 years, 1 month and 22 days. He had been in poor health for some time, but his death was sudden and peaceful due to complication of old age. John Piper was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Ward Piper on June 5, 1855 who still survives him. To this union twelve children were born, four of whom died in infancy. The living are Emmett, Jacob, Charles, Louella, Dora. Zora, John and Harvey, all of whom were present. He enlisted in Company H 140th Ohio Volunteers, on March 10, 1864, and received a certificate of thanks and an honorable discharge in September 1864. He, with his family, moved to Iowa the same year where he bought a farm in Eden Township, where they have since resided. He was a kind indulgent husband and father, a good and respected citizen and neighbor. Funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday, December 5, under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post, interment being in the Leon Cemetery. Two of the four children dying in infancy were named Bennie and Sarah L. Both are buried in the Manchester Cemetery, Eden Twp. Decatur County, Iowa Son Charles married Martha Ann Stephens Piper and both are buried in Bethel Cemetery, Eden Twp. Decatur County, Iowa. Zora May Piper married Henry Walter McNelly. Son Emmett Piper married Ida Bell Hatfield the daughter of James Wiley and Sarah Esther Stanley Hatfield. Harvey Piper and wife Imogene are buried in the Davis City, Decatur County, Iowa. |

Piper is 41 born in Missouri, married to Ethel 21, Missouri. They have Ivan 1 and Viola four months, both born in Oklahoma, and Vera Winfrey, Ethel's daughter, 5, born in Colorado. In 1930 Baca County, Colorado, John 51 and Ethel 31 have Ivan W. 12 and Viola 11. John is in Baca County in 1940, and Ethel 41 "widowed" is in Yamhll County Oregon, with Vivian, 9. Vivian Louise Piper, daughter of Ethel Ray and John S. Piper, was born about 1931, and married John Sexton in Los Angeles in 1951. Vera Lee Winfrey married Lloyd P. Higdon June 20, 1931, recorded in Kit Carson County. Vera Lucille (Winfrey) (Higdon) Gupton 1914-1993 is buried in Oretown, Oregon 90297012 Vivian Louise Piper, daughter of Ethel Ray and John S. Piper, was born about 1931, and married John Sexton in Los Angeles in 1951. John S. Piper 1878-1950 is buried in Walsh, Colorado.. So is Ivan W. Piper -1918-1997. |

Per 27161775, Emmett M. Piper -1861-1927, is buried in Walker Chapel, Howell County, as is Ida (Hatfield) Piper - 1868-1957. #27161787 says Ida Piper married William M. Poor October 20, 1935.
In 1930 Howell County, Missouri, Lewis E. and "Vina" are farming, with Alice M. 15, Ada I. 12 - both born in Colorado - and Emil E. 5, born in Missouri.
In 1940 Howell County, Lewis E. and "Nina" have only Edward, 15.
Lewis Edward Piper, per 62417538, is buried in Walker Chapel, Howell County, He was born March 28, 1891 at Leon Iowa, and died in Mountain View, Howell County.
| Vina Piper was born on August 17, 1891 in Gainesboro, Jackson
County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of John and Sallie Whitaker. Her
father John Whitaker passed away in 1899 and her mother Sallie passed
away in 1900. She and her brothers and sisters still living at home were
reared by her older sister Lear and her husband Louis Mayfield. They
moved from Tennessee in about 1905 and lived for a time in Lanton,
Howell County, Missouri she was around 14 years at this time, next they
moved to Dewey County Oklahoma Territory on a claim south of Lenora
where they lived in an area called the JV Flats. Between July 12, 1907
and April 25,1910 they moved to the South Fork Township in Howell County
Missouri. They were listed on the 1910 census in this County. They moved
to Wray, Yuma County, Colorado to homestead. Sometime in 1911 her uncle
and aunt Louis and Lear Mayfield moved to Oklahoma. Vina stayed in
Colorado and married Lewis Piper and they lived on a claim they
homesteaded. Sometime between March 9, 1910 and February 3, 1923 Lewis
and Vina Piper moved to Howell County Missouri where his parents lived
and farmed. To this union were born four children Alice, Inez (Inus),
Leara Agnes, Emmett. On December 9, 1950 Lewis passed away in Mountain
View Missouri. Vina later married Charles Ogle in 1953. On August 13,
1966 Vina passed away Mountain View Missouri. She was laid to rest at
Walker's Chapel Cemetery in Howell County, Missouri.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lear Mayfield was born on 27 August 1872 in Gainesboro, Jackson
county, Tennessee. She was the second child of eleven children born to
John and Sallie (Hunter) Whiteaker. She was united in marriage to Louis
Mayfield on 19 April 1893 in Gainesboro, Jackson county, Tennessee.
Louis Mayfield was the son of John and Lucinda Amanda (Walker) Mayfield.

| Funeral services for Emmett Edward Piper, 78 Mt. View will be held 1
p.m. Thursday June 5, 2003 at Yarber Chapel in Mt. View with the Rev.
Harold Smith officiating. Mr. Piper died Sunday June 1, 2003 at Mt. View Health Care. He was born March 21, 1925, at Trask, the son of Lewis and Vina Whiteaker Piper. Mr. Piper served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. On Jan 27, 1946, he was married to Mildred E. Smith, and to this union four children were born. He worked for the Mountain View Special Road District and was a farmer. He was a member of Little Zion Church for 60 years, and served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was a loving husband and father who cared deeply for his church family. He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. Survivors include his loving wife, Mildred Piper of the family home; three sons, Gene and wife Beverly, and Randy l. Piper, all of Springfield, and Rodney L. And wife Lexie, Mtn view; one daughter Pamela S. Rhodes and husband Daryl, Joplin; one sister Alice Rowlett, Granite City, Ill; and his grandchildren, Scott and Tracy Rhodes, Misty and Herbie Thorpe, Thom Rhodes, Timothy Piper, Amy Piper, Kyle and William Piper, Dustin and Tiffany Weaver and Sarah and Matt Draeger. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Inez Evins; and one grandchild, Jeffery E. Gentry. |
