1890 San Luis Graphic "George Grist and L. Smith have just sunk a three-inch artesian well on Mr. Smith's farm, which has a most remarkable flow. It is down 617 feet and flow by actual measurement 47 statutory inches of water per second. They are now sinking a six-inch well on the adjoining farm."
George's quarter was to be auctioned in 1906 - it reads as though George had borrowed $300 with the land as collateral and didn't pay anything.
