James proved up a quarter in 15, 4S 43W in 1893, Wm. V. next to him in 1894, and Frank F. proved up a quarter in 14, next to James, in 1920.  Frank's witnesses were Austin I. Rowley, Earl R. Moberly, Wilber Welch, and Charles E. Welch, all of Armel..

George was single in 1900 Scott County, Iowa born November 1874, with his parents.  Next household is James Fletcher, April 1845 and Martha Nov 1856, both born in Ireland.  There's another Fletcher family a few lines before - Alexander Jan 1856 and Margaret Aug 1851, both Ireland.  Maybe the neighbors aren't the same James Fletcher....

George Watt McConnell, per one tree, was born Nov 25, 1874, married Mary Martha "Minnie" Fletcher January 10, 1901 and died March 1963 in Wray.

In 1910 Vernon precinct George and Mary McConnell, both 35 born in Iowa, have Violet 6 and Ethel 4, also born in Iowa..  Ethel McConnell married Fred A. Williams June 3, 1914.

They're in Yuma County in 1920, 1930 and 1940.    In 1922 Geo W. was paid $100 salary as under sheriff in Yuma County.

In 1940 Wray they're running a flower shop.  The Iowa birth records show a Violet I McConnell born October 3, 1903 in Princeton Township, Scott County, Iowa, to Geo W. McConnell and Minnie M. Fletcher.  George 1874-1963 and Mary M, 1874-1965 McConnell are buried in Wray.  The tree said Violet married Otto Hanry Renzelmann June 10, 1964, and Ethel married Allen Curitz December 27, 1930.

In 1900 Decatur County, Kansas Frank, born Aug 1859, is married seven years to Ora, February 1877 Illinois.  Ether was born Nov 1896 in Missouri, Raymond Jan 1899 in Kansas.

In 1910 Decatur County, Kansas Frank Fletcher, 54, married 17 years but no spouse, has Ethel 13, Raymond 10, and Frank 6 all kids born in Kansas.

1919 "Frank Fletcher who makes his home with Charles Goodman, returned Saturday from Denver where he had been visiting his mother for the last two weeks."

In 1920 Yuma County Frank Fletcher 64, Pennsylvania, divorced, a building carpenter,  has son Frank A. 16, Kansas

Ethel has married Lloyd Moberly and - and Lola and Raymond are living with them in Hale.  In 1922 Yuma County R.M. Fletcher, F.J. Fletcher, and L.M. Fletcher were all working on the county roads - L.M. was paid royalty, too - maybe he had a gravel pit.

In 1930 Raymond is in Grand Island, Nebraska, a lineman for the telegraph company.  He's married four years to Helen, 28, Missouri

William V. FLETCHER

William was born in 1866 in Missouri. His middle name may be Vardaman. The 1870 US Census of Big Creek Twp., Cass Co., MO, shows him as a 4-year-old, living with his family. He is shown as a 13-year-old living with his father in the 1880 Federal Census of Hardin Twp., Ottawa Co., IA. Apparently, he moved to Colorado where he married a woman named Jesse and sired two children, Clinton and Myrtle. By the time of the 1895 Iowa State Census, William had relocated in Page County, Iowa. He is enumerated there, along with his family, his widowed father and widowed older brother: William [28, IL (sic)]; Jessie [24, CO]; Clinton [7, CO]; Myrtle [1, CO]; James [75, IN, widower]; and John W. [32, NE, widower]. The family appears in the 1900 and 1910 US Census records of Nodaway Twp., Page Co., IA, including a son, Wilber, born about 1907. The 1920 Federal Enumeration shows they had moved to Mason Twp., Taylor Co., IA, but Myrtle was no longer living with them. The 1925 Iowa State Census includes the family, still in Mason Township. By the time of the 1930 US Census of Mason Township, Clinton had died and the other two children had left home. William and Jesse are shown with adopted two children: 10-year-old Wilma Fletcher and 8-year-old Joseph Fletcher. According to cemetery records, William and Jesse both died in Page Co., KS, in 1941.

The FindAGrave entry in Clarinda Iowa cemetery for Clinton Clarence Fletcher says he was born Mar 31, 1888 in Arapahoe County, and died January 11, 1928 in Iowa, son of William Fletcher (Logan was in Arapahoe County in 1888)

In the Clarinda cemetery is William V. Fletcher, born Jan 31, 1866 in Buchanan County Missouri, dying Nov 1941 in Page County. 

The FAG entry for Jessie E. Arthur Fletcher says she was born Sep 16, 1870 in Mercer County, married William Nov 11, 1886 in Wahoo Nebraska, and died Jan 23, 1941 in Page County.

Wilbur R [aymond] Fletcher, 66, of rural Clarinda died Friday afternoon August 1973 after being stricken at his farm home southeast of Clarinda. He was born Sept 12, 1906, at Clarinda the son of William and Jessie Arthur Fletcher. On Feb 21, 1929 he was married to Eathell [Nevella] Fleming who survives.

Mr Fletcher was just planning to retire and move to Clarinda in the near future, having bought a home at 823 South 16th. They were to hold a closing out farm sale Aug 18, which plans will be carried out.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Lewis Hunter officiating. Nick Roberts was soloist and Grace Perry organist. Casket bearers were Emory Hardee, Estes Hardee, Will Morrow, Dale Crawford, George Stanley, Marvin Brown, Harold Fine and Emory Hardee Jr. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by four children, Carl Fletcher of Clarinda, Mrs. Max (Wyleen) [Ona] Thompson of Mt Home, Ark, Mrs. James (Barbara) Moses, and Bill Fletcher of Shambaugh. There are six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

James was born on 2 April 1817 to Vardaman and Elizabeth Fletcher in Washington County, Indiana, after his parents had moved from Virginia. He is likely one of the unnamed sons of Vardaman in the 1820 US Census of Washington County. When the family moved north to Morgan County, about three years later, he would have gone with them. There is no record of James purchasing any land in Indiana, so he may have lived with his parents or older brothers until his marriage to Melinda (or Belinda) Mills in 1840, a native of Indiana or Kentucky. As no record of the marriage appears in the Indiana Marriage Index, perhaps James married in Illinois--see below.

About the same year, his father died, and James' older brother, Abraham, became the new leader of the family. Abraham, along with several of his siblings, moved their families to Missouri. James, however, seems to have gone to Illinois where his first child, Margaret, was born in 1842. Later, James decided to join his siblings in Missouri. His first son, James K., was born in 1845 in Nodaway County, Missouri: this is where Abraham's family was living. A total of four children were born in Missouri to James and Melinda. The family is enumerated in the 1850 US Census of District 64, Nodaway Co., MO. James is listed as a 37-year-old farmer (should be 33) with no real estate. His wife is given as Melinda [28], a native of Indiana. Their children are enumerated as: Margar P. [7, IL]; James K. P. [4, MO]; Martha J. [3, MO]; Francis M. [1, MO]; and Thomas B. [1/12, MO].

By the time his daughter, Louisa, was born in 1851, James had moved the family to Fremont County, Iowa, coinciding with Abrham's move to the same location. Another daughter, Amanda, was born there in about 1854. The family is included in the 1856 Iowa State Census, living in Sidney Township: James [39, IN, farmer]; Malinda [34, IN]; Margaret [14, IL]; James K. P. [10, MO]; Martha [10, MO]; Francis [8, MO]; Thomas [6, MO]; Louisa [5, IA]; and M.J. [2, IA]. However, the family was soon to move again. When James' son, John, was born in 1857, the family was living just across the Missouri River in the Territory of Nebraska. They are enumerated in the 1860 US Census of Plattsmouth, Cass Co., Nebraska Territory: James [39, IN, farmer, $1000/$700]; Marinda [46 (sic), IN]; Margaret [18, IL]; James K. [15, MO]; Martha J. [12, MO]; Francis M. [11, MO]; Thomas [9, MO]; Louisa J. [8, IA]; Amanda [6, IA]; and John W. [3, NE]. Oldest daughter, Margaret, was married in 1862 in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., NE. Also found in the 1860 Census of Cass Co., NE, is the family of James' older brother, Richard.

James apparently could not remain long in one location. When his last son, William, was born in 1866, he was back in Missouri. The family is included in the 1870 US Census of Big Creek Twp., Cass Co., MO: James [54, IN, farmer]; Belinda [49, KY]; Frances [21, MO]; Thomas [19, MO]; Manda [16, IA]; John W. [16, NE]; Henrietta [9, NE]; Joseph [5, NE]; and William [4, MO]. It appears the move to Cass Co., Missouri, may have been made to join Melinda's kin. As shown in the same 1870 Census, living nearby were the families of Benjamin F. Mills and Charles E. Mills, natives of Wayne Co., Kentucky. Living with Benjamin was his 73-year-old mother, Elizabeth Mills, widow of Charles Ewing Mills, and 44-year-old Elizabeth Mills, his sister. The 1870 Federal Census shows James' oldest daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Thomas Fimple, stayed behind in Cass Co., NE. Melinda/Belinda, died sometime before 1880. And, again, James, moved on. He is found in the 1880 US Census as a 65-year-old widowed farmer, Jas. Fletcher, living with his sons, Joseph [16, NE] and William [13, MO], in Hardin Twp., Pottawattamie Co., IA. Hardin Township is the same location where his sons, Francis and John, are enumerated. His children, Margaret, Martha, and Thomas, have also been located in Iowa.

The 1895 Iowa State Census shows James as a 75-year-old widower, living with the family of his son, William, in Page Co., IA. According to his death certificate, James died of old age on 29 January 1897 in Clarinda, Page Co., IA. From his 1898 Obituary: "James Fletcher was born in Indiana, April 2, 1894 (sic). In early years came to Iowa and bought a farm near Siam. In young manhood joined the M.E. church and later the United Brothren (sic), last fall coming to Clarinda and made his home with his son W. V. Fletcher, when he died Jan. 28th. He was the father of thirteen children, seven boys and six girls. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. White at the family home Sunday at 12, noon."
