" "I was born in Franktown, Colorado November 3, 1898. [John stated in the above transcription of his WWI draft registration card that he was born November 3, 1899.] In 1903, I moved to father's tree claim southwest of Vernon to the sod house where he died in 1905. After his death, my mother paid the mortgage and we held on to the place.
"In August 1915 I left Manitou and walked up the cog road to the top of Pikes Peak, slept there, watched the sunrise, ate breakfast, and walked back to Manitou. that October I lost parts of two fingers while pulling a pump.
"My first job away from home paid me 50 cents a day to cut locoweed. After that I worked for several neighbors, George Hadlock, Ralph Wall, and John Foreman. Then I rented land from my mother, my step-father, John Foreman, Frank Scherrup, Joe Wingfield, and Fredrick Engel.
"I registered for World War I, September 12, 1918 and was to leave Wray in November, but the Armistice was signed November 11, 1918. Then, during World War II, I went to Denver and took my examination. I was 45 years old and was farming, so they sent me home in class 4F.
"On February 23, 1944, I married Doshia R. Foltmer who was born in Missouri on April 14, 1895 and came to Colorado in 1911. When we celebrated our 25th anniversary, on hundred fifty relatives and friends came and we received 155 cards.
"In 1945 we bought John Kier's land, 160 acres and in 1951, after mother's death in the preceding November, I bought father's tree claim and we have lived here. I farm and raised cattle. Doshia helped milk and raised chickens and a garden. We got a Federal loan and paid the mortgage, then we worked and paid the Federal loan. I saw high prices and low prices, hailstorms, dust storms and drought.
"In October 1947, I bought a little Allis-Chalmers tractor the only tractor I have ever owned. It cost $1,372.
"I milked cows for twenty-five years and then after Doshia and I married, we milked for twenty-five years more. We sold cream and eggs to buy groceries. In 1954, Doshia received an inheritance from her mother's estate and had the house remodeled. In 1963, we got television and in 1971, a stereo.
"On February 17, 1973, I bought my first new car, a Ford Maverick, from Gene Palmrose Ford in Wray.
"In October, 1975, we took our first plane ride, to California. While we were there we saw many sights: Knotts, Disneyland, Wax Museum, Buck Owens Recording studio, Ex-president Nixon's estate, the big steamships, the Pacific Ocean, and Lawrence Welk, and he played the 'Missouri Waltz' for Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Greene from Vernon, California.
"On April 14, 1978, Doshia will be 83 and on November 3, I will be 80. We hope the Good Lord will let us spend a few more good years together." By John K. Greene."
