Foster cash-claimed a quarter in 32, 3S 43W in 1889, and Gilford next to him in1890.

F. M. CHUTE, PROMINENT WATERVILLE GROWER PASSES

In the death of Foster M. Chute of Waterville, whose passing occurred at Western Kings Memorial hospital at 8.30 Saturday evening, the Annapolis Valley loses one of its most prominent fruit growers and Waterville one of its foremost and highly esteemed citizens. Mr. Chute was taken ill Wednesday noon and on Friday was removed to the hospital where a successful operation for appendicitis was performed, but complications developed and death followed.

The deceased was 79 years of age. He was born in Somerset, the son of Silas P. and Mahitable (Morse) Chute, and with the exception of 15 years spent in the United States he had always been a resident of this county.

He is survived by one son, C. Earl, a prominent grower and a partner with his father in business: three daughters, May, wife of Prof. W. A. Maw of the poultry department of MacDonald college, Ste. Anne de Belliveau, Quebec; Hettie, M. A., Ph.D., of the staff of Rutgers university, New Brunswick, N. J.; and Winnie, B.A., R.N., of the teaching staff of Toronto university; one brother, G. D., and one half brother, S. B., both of Berwick. His wife predeceased him 13 years ago.

Mr. Chute went to the United States about 50 years ago, where he spent some time in Florida teaching in schools of farming. Following the heavy frosts in that state in the spring of 1892 he settled in Massachusetts, where he stayed until 1901 when he returned to Nova Scotia. Taking up residence at Waterville he began in a small way and 19 years ago he took his son Earl into partnership, the original property gradually being developed and expanded until today it is one of the largest fruit growing properties in the Valley. Perhaps one of the greatest reasons for the splendid development was the business relations between father and son, which have been at all times most harmonious and always without rift or fracture.

The deceased was a strong believer in the co-operative action by the fruit growers and when the United Fruit Companies of Nova Scotia was in the making he was one of its most prominent supporters. He was one of the organizers of the Waterville Fruit Companies, today one of the largest co-operatives in the Valley. He held that post from 1911 to 1915. Later he with his son organized the F. M. Chute Fruit Company, which is one of the United Fruit subsidiaries.

Among his other and varied activities, he was a stipendiary magistrate and was noted for his fair-minded judgment on all occasions. He was a man of sterling worth, whose word was as good as his bond, and no community interest was too small for him to aid in his whole-hearted characteristic manner. He was a life long Liberal and he had a host of business acquaintances attracted to him by his fair and just business dealings.

The funeral service will be held from the Waterville Baptist church today at 2.30 p.m., Rev. B. Linton, Waterville, and Rev. Dr. Prince, Woodville, officiating. Interment will be in Berwick cemetery.

Foster M. Chute married Laura B. Balcom July 5, 1887 in Boston.  She was the daughter of Samuel and Phebe.

In 1895 Woburn, Massachusetts, Foster M. Chute is a farmer, living at 183 Lexington.

In 1900 Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Foster, September 1857 and Laura B. May 1860, both Nova Scotia, have Nettie October 1888 and Minnie M. March 1890 - both Nebraska, Clifford L. Jan 1892 Florida and Winnie L. April 1897 Massachusetts.

FORMER NOVA SCOTIA TEACHER DIES IN U.S.

WATERVILLE - Miss Hettie M. Chute, eldest daughter of the late Foster M. and Laura B. Chute of Waterville, died in hospital at New Brunswick, New Jersey, after a short illness. Miss Chute was born at North Platte, Nebraska, 74 years ago and came to Nova Scotia with her parents in 1901. After attending the
Provincial Normal College, Miss Chute taught school in Nova Scotia before graduating from Acadia University in 1916. She entered Cornell University and obtained her doctors degree in Botany in 1930. Since, she had been on the faculty of Douglas College of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey
until her retirement in 1954.

Surviving are two sisters, May (Mrs. W. S. Maw), St. Anne de Belleveau, Quebec, and Winnie of the faculty of the Univ. of Toronto School of Nursing, one brother, C. Earl, Waterville, N. S.

Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of Douglas College after which the remains were forwarded to Nova Scotia where funeral services will be conducted from the H. C. Lindsay Funeral Home, Kentville at three o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be at a later date in Berwick Cemetery.

As an instance of what can be done by  direct representation the Department has received news from Buenos Aires of a successful trip made by Mr. Foster M. Chute, a representative of the United Fruit Companies of Nova Scotia, Limited.

Last year the United Fruit Company made a trial shipment to Buenos .Aires with satisfactory results. This season Mr. Chute by his personal visit has been enabled to open up business relations with the principal cities of South America for Nova Scotia apples. He has done exceedingly well and has made connections which will be of lasting benefit to the apple trade of Nova Scotia. A shipment of 10,056 boxes, 65 half barrels and 4,683 barrels has been placed at remunerative figures.

This is published as a hint of the possibilities of the South .American market, and secondly as to the advisability of direct representation. Good stock, well assorted, well packed and preserved, commands good prices in South America for those who are enterprising enough to go after it
 
One tree says Guilford Dudley Chute was born January 31, 1861 in Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia, married Alice Elizabeth Croft November 13 1909 in Berwick, Nova Scotia, and died November 11, 1955 in Berwick.  Child:  Raymond Croft Chute, born February 14, 1912 in Berwick, married Esther Elizabeth Keddy, and died May 27, 1958 in Berwick.

 

Michael Earl Chute of? Kenora, Ontario and Vancouver, died unexpectedly October 7, 2007 in Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. Born in Kentville on October 14, 1947, he was the beloved son of the late Allison and Verna (Long) Chute. As part of an air force family, he attended schools in three provinces before graduating from West Kings District High in 1965. Michael studied photogrammetry at the Nova Scotia Land Survey Institute before earning his Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Acadia University. At the University of Manitoba, he obtained his Master of Science degree in geology and was a PhD. candidate. He was a well-known and respected geologist throughout Canada with a specialty in economic geology and geochemistry of ore deposits. His work took him to northern Canada as well as South America and Africa. Most recently, he was the exploration manager for Western Warrior Resources Inc., Calgary. Michael was the proud father of Alexander, Hamilton, Ont., Patrick, Kenora, Ont., and Nicholas (Stephanie), Peterborough, Ont. Delighted grandfather of Emily and Mark. He is dearly missed by his sisters; Marilyn (Don) Mosher, Kentville; Kimberley Chute, Seattle; and Andrea (Ted) Leyton, Kingston, Ont. Nephews: Richard (Sherry) Arbic and Peter Arbic. Grandniece Vienna. Aunt Shirley Chute, Berwick. Uncles: Byron (Verna) Long, Kelowna, B.C. and Robert (Myrna) Chute, Berwick. Former wife, Sharon Louise Campbell-McKnight, Peterborough. Eighteen first cousins. Many close friends including Darlin Radtke, Vancouver, and the Wenzels, Winnipeg. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his younger brother, Foster in 1951. His late grandparents were well-known Kings County residents: Rupert and Inez (Atwell) Long of Black River and Earl and Ida (Pineo) Chute of Waterville. A celebration of Michael's life will take place in 2008. Then his ashes will be scattered from a plane over the Bay of Fundy. Please consider making a donation to the C.N.I.B. in memory of Michael. Shirley B. Chute - 89, of Berwick, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.  Born in Waterville, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late C. Earle and Ida Mae (Pineo) (Whitman) Chute. She had been employed as a teacher and retired from Acadia University. She is survived by a brother, Robert (Myrna) Chute, Berwick; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Durno; a brother, Allison. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
