Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Wilson (William) S.  and Rachel Amanda (Vanderslice) Lightle,  son Andrew Joab and Emily Lula Josephine (Stewart) Lightle, son Samuel C. Lightle, daughter Sarah Elizabeth Lightle (Ernest Mewhinney), Landsman. 

In 1870 William Lightle 25 and Rachel A. 18, Indiana in Miami County Kansas have Samuel C. , 1.  (would appreciate a scan of the Vanderslice article on page 289 of the Miami County history).

In 1880 Osage County Kansas Wilson is 35, Rachel A. 28, with Samuel C, 11, Mary C. 9, Andrew J. 6, Freddie W. 4, and Amanda E. four months.

They're still in Osage County in 1885, with Sarah E. 1, but no Amanda.

In 1900 Osage County Wilson Apr 1845 Ohio has been married 32 years to Rachel Jan 1852 Indiana.  Nine kids, six living.  Samuel Apr 1869 Missouri, Sarah E Aug 1883 Kansas, and Nellie A. Feb 1890 Kansas.

Sarah married Earnest C. Mewhinney in Osage County August 14, 1900.

In 1900 Osage Andrew Dec 1873 Kansas, has just married Emily S. June 1884 Missouri.  Francis Newhinney, 18 , is boarding with them.

In 1910 Idalia William S. Lightle is 65, Ohio, married to Mandy 59, Missouri

Bert Mewhinney proved up a quarter in 18, 5S 44W in 1911, and another parcel is 13, 5S 45W in 1914 - joining the Lightle claim.  the Ancestry trees say he was Earnest Sinclair "Bert" Mewhinney, son of James and Sarah (Sharpless) Mewhinney.

1910 "Sale of horses, cattle, implements, grain and feed of Lightle and Mewhinney will occur at their place southwest of Idalia Friday, December 30.  Frank Nash, auctioneer, L.R. Scott; Clerk."

Bert Mewhinney is listed as a photographer in Idalia in the 1911 business gazeteer.

1912 Kit Carson County Record  "The real estate firm of McCracken & Mewhinney have desolved (sic) partnership.  Mr. Mewhinney will conduct an auto livery."

Samuel C. Lightle proved up a quarter in 12, 5S 45W in 1913.

Andrew and Emily in Idalia have Lottie 8, Andrew 6, Curtis 5, Walter 4, all Kansas, Francis 2, Colorado, and newborn son Shalva.  On the same page are Ernest, Lizzie, and brother Milton Mewhinney.  Sarah E. had married Ernest. 

Ottawa Herald (Kansas) August 15, 1959

 Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mewhinney of Crestview nursing home,  celebrated the 59th anniversary of their marriage yesterday with a party for friends. It was also the occasion of Mrs. Mewhinney's 76th birthday. Mr. Mewhinney is 102. Sarah Lightle and Mr. Mewhinney were married at the bride's farm home. During the first years of their marriage they lived 2 miles northeast of Melvern. Both were born in this area and have lived here, particularly around Pomona and Ottawa, most of their lives. They were in Colorado about five years after homesteading near Burlington. "Plenty of work Is good for people if they don't over-do," maintains Mr. Mewhinney. He has farmed some, worked as a blacksmith and as a carpenter. He served as caretaker at Country Club two years during World War II, and has operated a filling station. "I like carpenter work best," Mr. Mewhinney recalls. "It was cash work. Sometimes when farmers came in for plowshare sharpening or horseshoeing they didn't have the money to pay at the time." Early day life wasn't all work, the Mewhinneys say. He often played the fiddle for country dances, getting from $1.50 to $3.50 according to the number of couples present. Sometimes there were three a week. "You could do a lot of things with that much money in those days. If we didn't have a better way to go several couples would load up in a lumber wagon and go several miles to a dance" With a bit of prompting from a son, the elder Mewhinney admitted laughingly that at the firs dance he played for, he fiddled all night for a quarter. Mrs. Mewhinney, with a bit of prompting from the same son, admitted that she made pan after pan of biscuits for breakfast, to say nothing of loaves of home made bread. "I'd like to do it yet," she sighed. Both she and her husband remarked however, that the bakery which bakes the bread for their present home does a good job.

Ernest died in September 1959 - survivors were widow, five sons - Derian. William and Emery, Denver, Edward, Quenemo, and Cecil, Topeka, one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Setty, Wichita. Burial will be at Delevan.

William (Wilson) proved up quarters in section 8, 5S 44W in 1913.

In 1915 the commissioners paid $10 for provisions for W.S. Lightle, so he must have been indigent.

Rachel died February 1917

In 1920 Wilson, 74 is widowed, living with Samuel C and his wife Viola, 42 in Yuma County. and Viola's sons' Jess Phillips 18, Robert 16, and John 11,

Wilson S. is buried in the Lucas cemetery.

In 1930 Idalia Samuel C. and Viola Y have only Edward, 9.

Samuel, Viola, and Edward are in Monterey County, California in 1940.

Samuel 1869 -1945 and E. Viola Lightle July 8, 1877 - April 3, 1954 are buried in Salinas, California.

Andrew J. Lightle filed in 1913 for a quarter in 11, 5S 45W,.

In 1920 Idalia Andy and Emily have Lottie 19, Andrew 17, Curtis 15, Walter 13, Shelba 10, Harry 8, Jessie 5, and Floyd eight months.

Andrew - December 18, 1873 - December 23, 1921 is buried in the Lucas cemetery.

In 1930 Lake County, Oregon, Emily, 45 is married to Riggs W. Odle, 40, and Harry, Jessie, and Floyd Lightle are with her.

Eca Curtis  Eugene Lightle 1904  -1983 married Edith Andrews 1904-1983 - they're buried in Lucas cemetery, too

DIGHTON  Kansas— Margaret M. "Sissy" Patten, 69, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born Dec. 17, 1943, to Eca Curtis and Edith Frances Andrews Lightle in Yuma County, Colo.

Margaret is also survived by her sisters: Eve (Sis) Davisson of Oregon, Linda (Bob) Heinze of Greeley, Tudy (Keith) Toland of Oxford, Kan., by her brothers: Bill (Freda) Lightle of Burlington, Dale Lightle of Idalia, David (Wilma) Lightle of Clinton, Mo., Carl (Carole) Lightle of New Mexico, Elmer (Sharon) Lightle of Goodland, Kan. and Larry (Kathy) Lightle of Kearney, Neb. -
