Roy and Jessie Werning

In 1910 Roy Werning is 20, in Pottawatomie, Kansas.

Roy Raymond Werning registered for WWI in Yuma County, saying he was born February 25, 1891 in P

In 1920 Laird are Roy R. 30 born Kansas, Jessie E. 26, Horld G. 8, Helen P. 5, Joseph G. 4, and Lila L. sixteen-months.

They're still in Laird in 1930, with Harold, Helen, Joseph, Lila, and have added Ruth V., 9.

Roy R. Werning is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, per FindAGrave, with a death date of April 15, 1983- but it has a birth date of February 25, 1890.

Jessie's FAG there says August 12, 1893 - April 25, 1991

Harold G. Werning enlisted in the army February 26, 1941 in Portland, Oregon, saying he was single, and worked in "architects."

Joseph G. Werning enlisted, also in Portland, April 10, 1941, saying he was single, and a chauffer/driver.

SSDI has him born September 28, 1912, dying June 1985 with last residence LaSalle, Colorado.

Joe G. Werning, 94, of Greeley died on April 16, 2010 at Bonell Good Samaritan Center.  He was born November 27, 1915 in Laird, CO to Roy Raymond and Jessie Edith (Green) Werning.

Joe was raised in Laird and graduated from Laird High School in 1935 and attended Colorado State Teacher’s College.  He moved to Oregon until he was drafted in to the US Army, serving during World War II.  After his discharge, he moved to the farm on the Godfrey Bottom west of LaSalle where he farmed with his brother and also took care of his parents.

Survivors include his sister Ruth Berkenkotter of Salida and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold and sisters Helen Shaffer and Lila Elliott.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  A reception will follow at the Werning’s Barn.

Lila L. Elliott

Homemaker, volunteer, 77 Lila L. Elliott of Denver, a homemaker and community volunteer, died March 7 in Denver. She was 77. Services were March 11 at Washington Park United Methodist Church. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery. She was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Laird . She married Howard S. Elliott. They were divorced. Mrs. Elliott was on the Colorado Board of Mental Health and the board of trustees of Bethesda Hospital. She was a mental health lobbyist at the state legislature. She is survived by two sons, Howard S., Denver, and Robert M., Portland, Ore.; a brother, Joseph Werning; two sisters, Helen Shaffer and Ruth Berkeukotter; and two granddaughters. Contributions may be made to the Colorado Alliance for the Mentally Ill, 1100 Fillmore St., Denver 80206-3334.

Jack Berkenkottr, 86, of Greeley, CO, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2007 at North Colorado Medical Center Hospice Inpatient Unit. He was born June 12, 1921 in Pueblo, CO to Gerard F. and Margaret (Cronin) Berkenkotter.Jack is survived by his wife, Ruth Berkenkotter of Greeley; son, Ken Berkenkotter and wife, Cindy, of Salida; daughter, Karen Ress of Littleton; and three granddaughters.He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and one grandson.Cremation will be completed. A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 7, 2007 at Allnutt Funeral Service/Macy Chapel.Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
