Squire F. and Prudence Snyder and the Murdocks

SQUIRE FELIX SNIDER was born June 1808 in Kentucky, and died after 1900 in Yuma County, Colorado. He married (1) NANCY BLAND May 31, 1827 in Hardin County, Kentucky, daughter of DANIEL BLAND and ELIZABETH HUGHES. She was born Abt. 1810 in Kentucky. He married (2) PRUDENCE L. Aft. 1860 in Kansas. She was born Abt. 1822 in Pennsylvania.
Squire Snyder settled on section 28 in Jackson township, Montgomery County, Iowa, but afterward moved to Kansas.

One descendant wrote "Actually he stayed in Iowa for a quite awhile before moving to Kansas. From 1846 on he is living in Iowa. He moved to Kansas around 1859 and settled in Washington County, KS. "

In 1856 Page County, Iowa, S. F. Snider is 48, Nancy 52, Jonathan 18, Edward G. 14, and Mary S. Briles 10.

After Squire’s wife (Nancy A. Bland) died, he married Prudence L. Smith Murdock.
In 1880 Washington County, Kansas, Squire is 72, Prudence 59, with Alberta Murdock 27 and Duella 25.

In 1885 Jefferson County, Nebraska, S. F. Snyder is 76, a hotel proprietor, with Purdence 66. Daughter Dually Murdock is with them, and son David Murdock 22.

Squire F. Snider cash-claimed 160 acres in 1 and 12, 1N 43W in 1891, and proved up a quarter in section 12 in 1893.

October 28, 1898 "Mrs. A. D. Murdock and Mrs. T. F. Snyder were the guests of Mrs. McGrew one day last week."

February 25, 1899 "Mrs. P. L. Snyder died very suddenly at her home at Laird last Saturday about 1 o'clock p.m. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure. Although she had been ailing for some weeks past, she was able to be up and about the house and no fears were felt by her family concerning her condition.
On Sunday services were held at the family residence, being quiet and unostentatious in character. H. A. Bradford made a prayer and delivered an address suitable to the occasion. Several beautiful and appropriate hymns were sung. Mrs. J. D. Jordan presided at the organ.
At the close of the service friends were permitted to take a last look at the face from which life had departed. The remains were taken to Wymore, Neb., for interment, where a family monument was erected some years ago after the death of her son, Bashford, who was buried there.
Prudence Louisa Smith was born in Green County, Pennsylvania in December 1820. She was married to Rev. D. A. Murdock in Green county and moved west, in early life. Rev. Murdock was a pioneer minister in Kansas, being first a missionary to the Otoe Indians. He died in the spring of 1863. About two years later she became the wife of Judge S. F. Snyder who survives her. She came to Colorado in 1886, and was among the pioneers of this country. By her first marrlnge there were nine children, five of whom are now living, Mr. Charles Murdock of Wymore, Neb., Alonzo D., Daniel A. and Dualla R. Murdock and Mrs. Alfretta Hays, all of Laird. Many friends sympathize with the husband and children in their loss.
She united with the Presbyterian church at the agee of 10, since which time she has lived consistent to the rules of that organization and in accordance with the duties of an upright Christian.
Mrs, Snyder was a woman of remarkable strength of character and bright intellectual powers. Although she was approaching her 80th birthday, up to within the past few weeks she has always taken an active part in the management of her household and business affairs, and her mental faculties remained unimpaired up to the last moments of her life. There are few women who have led more active and useful lives than Mrs. Snyder."

June 16, 1899 "The home of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Murdock's was the scene of a very pleasant gathering one day this week, the occasion of which was the 91st birthday of their step-father, T. F. Snider. At noon an excellent dinner was served. The day will be long remembered by those attended. At a late hour the guests departed for their homes wishing Grandpa Snider many more birthdays. Those present were : Mr. and Mrs. Shumaker, J. D. Jordon and family, Mrs. Fisk, Mrs. W. E. McGinnis, Mrs. McGrue, Mr. and Mrs. Rife, Judge and Mrs. J. S. Hendrie and J. N. Counter and wife of Wray."

In 1900 Laird precinct, Squire is single, born June 1808 in Kentucky,
June 15, 1900 "S. F. Snider, who was 92 years old June 10, started for Villisca, Iowa, Tuesday, where he will spend the summer with his grandson, James Tice."

October 6, 1900 "S. T. Snider left on No. 12 Sunday for Iowa.

September 13, 1901 Laird "S.F. Snider is here looking after his real estate."

St. Louis city death records have Squire dying May 4, 1903, born in Kentucky June 9, 1805, a farmer, widowed.
His last residence was 3737 Kossuth Avenue, where he died. He had been in St. Louis one year. To be buried in "Fredens" cemetery.

June 12, 1903 Wray Rattler "Squire Snyder, step-father of Lon Murdock died several weeks ago at the age if 95. Squire Snyder was for some fifteen years located at Laird on a large ranch and is well known to all the old settlers here. At the time of his death he was living at St. Louis."

January 11, 1907 " A letter from Charley Snider, of St. Louis, was received here a few days ago, stating that his father, J. B. Snider, who is known to many of our old settlors, died in that city last week and was buried. Thursday."

(A descendant corrected this "Joel Snider is not part of this family. I have done extensive research lately and am convinced that he isn’t a son of Squire. Someone posted his name once and now it gets attached in error. Joel lived in Washington County, KS very near to Squire. > ")

iii. EDWARD G. SNIDER, b. January 1841, Kentucky; d. Bet. 1900 - 1910, Kansas.

JONATHAN B. SNIDER (SQUIRE F.) was born November 1836 in Kentucky, and died Bet. 1900 - 1907 in St Louis, Missouri. He married (1) ELBRA ANN BAKER September 25, 1856 in Page Co., Iowa, daughter of GEORGE BAKER and ELIZABETH HOLLIS. She was born November 1839 in Shelby County, Indiana, and died 1916 in Rice County, Kansas. They divorced about 1862. He married (2) SABINA B. ROBERTS June 30, 1863 in Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas, daughter of BENJAMAN ROBERTS and REBECCA GIVENS. She was born December 1847 in Brayton County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1900.

In 1868, he was Washington County Treasurer.

Jonathan lived in Washington county, Kansas in 1873 per the Page Co., Iowa newspaper.

In the summer of 1872, J. B. Snider erected a hotel on the west side of the square. It was opened in September of that year, and is now known as the Commercial House, a popular resort for travelers. The building is 52x40 feet, two stories, and will accommodate some sixty guests. The property is valued at $6,000. G. W. Sharp, the present landlord, has been in possession nearly four years.

Elizabeth Haynes Tice, daughter of Squire F. and Nancy Snider, was born February 25, 1830 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and died July 6, 1919. Her childhood days were spent in Louisville, Ky. When about six years of age she moved with her parents to Marietta, Ohio, and afterwards moved to Nodaway County Mo., where she was married to Alexander M. Tice December 3, 1846.

They began housekeeping near Braddyville, and a few years later moved to the old homestead six miles south of Villisca where they remained until after her husband's death which occurred June l5, 1887. To this union were born eight children, of which five survive, Johnathan S. Tice, Portland, Ore. Sarah F. Roulett, Kanas City, Mo., Ada A. Orme, Clarinda, la., Alice J. Robb, Omaha, Nebr., Emma E. Bearden, Bloomfield, la. Funeral services were held at her home in Villisca, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Baker, pastor of the Christian church.

She was laid to rest (# 106734427) beside her husband in the Villisca Cemetery. The pall bearers were her three sons in-law and three grandsons. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Jul 10, 1919

In 1870, Elbra is living in Page Co., IA, working at a hotel owned by John Bean (same hotel that her father George had owned?) She is listed as Elva Snyder. Her two boys are in Johnson Co., MO with George and Eliza. She was divorced.

Elbra Ann, divorced, and her two sons, lived with George and Eliza Baker in Kingsville in 1880.

Elbra still single and was living near Sedalia MO in Dresden in 1900. She is listed on the 1900 census as Alba, but indexed as Alia Snider. Her brother, James H. Baker lived in Sedalia.

One tree said Sabina's brother Enoch David Roberts died in 1924, buried in Wray # 63199707.

Jonathan, living at 3737 Kossuth Avenue in St. Louis, born Nov 13, 1835 in Kentucky, died December 28, 1906, to be buried in Friedens Cemetery.
He was the son of Squire F. Snider born in Kentucky and Nancy A. Bland born in West Virginia.

Sabina B. (Roberts) Snider 1846-1926 is buried in Seattle # 64598981. He mother was Re\becca J. Givens, father B.L. Roberts.

EDWARD G. SNIDER was born January 1841 in Kentucky, and died Bet. 1900 - 1910 in Kansas. He married EMMARANTY C.. She was born January 1844 in West Virginia.
