Samuel and Matilda (Roberts) Gilbert


In 1850 Braxton County, Virginia, John Roberts is 37, Margaret 32, Benjamin F. 10, Catherine J. 8, Elizabeth S. 7. "Malinda Anne" 5, Johnson 3, and Ann 1.
In 1860 Olathe, Kansas, John Roberts is 47, Margaret 36, Ben F. 20, Catherine J. 18, Elisabeth S. 16, MATILDA A. 14, George W. (George Roberts and sister Elizabeth also moved to Laird) 10, Eliza A. 8, Madore E. 6, Amanda 4, and John 2.
Margaret Davis and John Roberts had married August 21, 1839 in Braxton County, Virginia.

In 1860 St. Clair County, Missouri, Samuel Gilbert is 56, born in Tennessee, Charlotte 43 born in North CArolina. Webster is 19, Tennessee, Samuel N. 14 Missouri, and Tillman 5 Missouri.
Samuel's niece, Tilman's daughter, Alice Cora Gilbert was born in Missouri, married Robert F. Jackson, and is buried in Otis, Colorado 1891-1982 # 92260682.
In 1920 Robert and Alice, with a lot of kids, are with Robert's brother George Jackson in Sheridan County, Kansas. George Jackson, 38, is in Eckley in 1930, farming, with Allie 33, both born in Missouri. Kenneth R. is 10 born in Kansas.



Robert Jackson 1882-1949 is on the same tombstone # 92260698.
March 17, 1949

ROZELLA (JACKSON) KUNTZ, 68, died Dec. 20, 2000, at a Colorado Springs hospital. She worked as a teller at Mountain Bell Phone Co. for 29 years. 
Mrs. Kuntz was born Oct. 14, 1932, in Eckley to Robert Franklin Jackson and Alice Cora Gilbert, who are deceased. She was married Dec. 9, 1952, to George W. Kuntz. 
She is survived by her husband; a son, Monte; a daughter, Marsha Dunkin; three sisters, Doralea Sauer, Sharlotte Smith and Francis Williams; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Jr., Jim and Jake; and three sisters, Violet, Geneva and Victoria. 
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 106 Sixth Ave., Otis. Burial will be at Otis Cemetery, Otis
Rozella 1932-2000, # 78709785 is buried in Otis with George W. 1928-2004.


Samuel 1804-1873 is buried in St. Clair County # 29025868.

Samuel Gilbert and Matilda Roberts married in Johnson County, Kansas.

Catherine Roberts married David Umphries in Johnson County, Kansas.
One tree said John Roberts married Anna Holmgren in 1864, and moved to Minnesota, dying at age 94 in June 1910, buried in Brainerd, Minneota # 100207421.

They're next to the Ben F. Roberts 34 family, with Jane 27, M.E. 66, Kathlene 4, Eleanora 3, and W. H. 1.

In 1885 Washington County, Samuel Gilbert is 39. a laborer, with Matilda 39. Juneietta is 15, John W. 9, and Samuel W. four months old.

In 1900 Laird precinct, Samuel is farming, born August 1842 in Kentucky, married 36 years to Matilda August 1843 West Virginia. Samuel was born November 1884 in Kansas.
Samuel died in 1909, buried in Wray # 62988780.
Because the Gilberts were at a wedding in 1901 Laird, Matilda must be related to the Rufus F. Roberts family - who were also in Washington County, Kansas in 1880, and Johnson Count i Kansas in 19900.

1909 Laird Mrs. Etta Gilbert, of Orleans, is visiting with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gilbert."
April 23, 1909 "We learn as we go to press this morning that Samuel Gilbert, well known by all our old settlers made the journey home to his Maker early this morning. The funeral will be held at the M. E. Church at Laird tomorrow (Saturday) at ten thirty in the morning. Interment will be made at Grand View cemetery."

In 1910 Yuma County, Samuel is farming 25, and mother Matilda is with him. She's had eight kids, two living.
May 27, 1916

They're farming in Kirk in 1920, no kids. On the same page are David Manley 53, Many 50, Henry 19, and Elsie 17.

April 20, 1922 "Erma Irene, the infant daughter of Sam and Mary (Manley)Gilbert, died at Stratton, Colorado, at the age of 1 year, 7 months and 21 days. She had been ill with stomach trouble and her parents stayed in the Collins Hotel with Erma the night before they were to travel to Denver for medical treatment for her. Erma died at the hotel. The remains were laid to rest at the Kirk Cemetery. "


In 1930 Kirk, Colorado, Samuel is a plasterer, 43, with Hannah M. 33, Delbert S. 7 and Carroll N. 5. They're next to physician Theodore M. Hotopp, so they must be in the town.
On the same page are David Manley 64, a trucker born in Illinois, with Isabelle 60 born in New Brunswick, Canada.

1933 "Mrs. Sam Gilbert sole her farm, 3 miles southeast of Kirk, to G. I. Idler, the deal being made during the past week. David Idler will farm the place again the coming year."

In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gilbert's nephew ?? Garcia visited. His parents Dr. and Mrs. James Garcia of Idalia and brother James David Garcia on his way to enter West Point.
In 1940, Samuel is a plasterer in Grand Junction, Colorado, 54, with Mary 47, Delbert 17, Carroll 15, and Jack 9. All were in Kirk Colorado in 1935.

In 1941, Delbert Gilbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gilbert of Grand Junction, was visiting at the George Idler home in Kirk. Delvert will be a high school senior this year."

Samuel Webster Gilbert registered for WWII in Grand Junction, born Nov 27, 1894 at Washington Kansas. His reference was Mrs. Maude Idelr of Kirk, Colorado.
Samuel died in 1943, buried in Grand Junction "Funeral services for Samuel Webster Gilbert were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Martin Chapel. The Reverend Lyle E. Prescott conducted the rites, and burial was in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction Colorado. Wanda Bailey, Melvin Bailey, Nyla Hall and Lyle Prescott sang My Home Sweet Home, When I Get to the End of the Way, and There will Be No Shadows. Pallbearers were Nelson Gibson, Neal Plaisted, John Cramer, Lawrence O’Neil, Gail Wilcox and C. A. Willers. Honorary pallbearers were Burman Wheeler, Charles F. Cole, John Pagett and Arthur Burgess.
Samuel Webster Gilbert, son of Samuel N. and Matilda Ann Gilbert, was born November 20, 1884, at Washington, Kansas. His father had enlisted in the army early in the Civil War and served until the end of the war. Mr. Gilbert spent his childhood at Washington, and graduated from the high school. When he was a young man, he moved with his parents to Laird, Colorado.
Mr. Gilbert married Hannah Mary Manley on April 27, 1916 in Wray, Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert and family moved to Grand Junction in 1936. Mr. Gilbert was a plasterer by trade. He was always fair and of a generous disposition and made friends easily. He was a good father.
Surviving besides his widow, Mary Gilbert, are three sons, Pfc. Delbert Samuel Gilbert, in the air force, Pvt. Carroll Nison Gilbert in the army, and John William Gilbert, 12, at home. A daughter Erma Irene, two sisters and six brothers, and his parents, preceded Mr. Gilbert in death. Samuel Webster Gilbert passed away on Nov. 28, 1943. "

Mary is buried in Grand Junction "Mrs. Mary Gilbert, 77, of 2939 Orchard Avenue, a resident of Grand Junction for 33 years, died at 12:50 a.m. today in Medicenter. She had been in ill health for five years.
Mrs. Gilbert was the widow of Samuel Gilbert, a construction worker, who died here on November 23, 1943. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gilbert was born Hannah Mary Manley, on November 18, 1892, at Kirk. She spent her early life there. The Gilberts were married at Wray on April 27, 1916, and lived in Kirk until they moved to Grand Junction.
She is predeceased by one daughter Erma Irene Gilbert who passed away as an infant on April 20, 1922 at Stratton Colorado at the age of 1 year, 7 months and 21 days.
She is survived by three sons, Delbert and Carroll, both of Grand Junction, and Jack of Tonopah, Nevada; three brothers including Ralph Manley of Fruita, Colorado, Robert Earl Manley of Nampa, Idaho and Arch Manley of Granby, Colorado; three sisters, including Mrs. Orpha Romkee of Grand Junction, Colorado, Berniece Griffin of Natoma, Kansas and Elsie Knudsen of Canon City Colorado.
Hannah Mary Gilbert was born in Kirk Colorado the second child of twelve children born to David Stephen Manley and Isabella Barbara McNair. Mary Gilbert beloved wife,mother and sister passed away on June 4, 1970 in Grand Junction Colorado."

John W. Gilbert is in Wray in 1900, a barber, boarding with the Alf Davenport hotel, born May 1874 in Kansas
In 1885 Jefferson County, Kansas, "Ellie" Steele is 2, with parents John 59 and Margaret 44. Walter is 20, Luella 18, Laura 17, Fannie 13, John 15, Eva 6, Annie 5, and Ellie 2.

April 1905 "Mrs. J. W. Gilbert, of Burlington, Colorado, arrived in Laird Thursday. She is visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gilbert, of this place. Her husband will be here soon."

February 18, 1910 Laird "Mrs. Etta Gilbert is visiting at Norton Kansas and on her return home will be accompanied by her mother Mrs. Steele."

In 1910 John is in Laird, a barber, 34, married seven years to Ettie 28, both born in Kansas. Ettie's mother maggie Steele 68 widowed, born in Ohio, is with them.

June 2, 1911 Laird " Mrs. Steele is very poorly at this report.
"Miss Steele, niece of Mrs. Etta Gilbert spent Friday evening with Miss Ina Crum ."
(This is Maggie O. Steele, born about 1894 to Walter W. and Effie M. Steele)

June 9, 1911 "After a long spell of sickness Mrs. Steele quietly passed away at 9 o'clock on Sunday morning. The remains were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Bois Gilbert to Norton, Kansas, the former home of the deceased."
June 16, 1911 "Miss Leona Alley of Norton, Kansas is here to spend her summer vavation with her aunt, Mrs. Bois Gilbert." )This is the daughter of Etta's sister Anne Al(Steele) Alley.
Anna (Steele) Alley 1880-1970 is buried in Los Angeles # 85843207.


Margaret Steele 1841-1911 is buried in Norton # 37819455, with John 1825-1906 # 37819450.

August 22, 1912 Laird "Mrs. Etta Gilbert and niece, Maggie Steele left for the latter's home in Norton, Kansas. Mrs. Gilbert will be gone a week while Maggie will remain at her home in Norton."
February 1915 Laird "Mr. and Mrs. Lone Rife have rented the C. E. Miller hotel and will take possession as soon as J. W. Gilbert vacates."
May 1914 " Bose Gilbert has moved his barber shop to the Laird hotel where the cleanest shaves to be had in Yuma county are on tap, as well as the best meal to be had in town for the price. Besides, the cheerful liar can repair a gas lamp to beat the manufacturer. Gasoline lamps surpass the sunlight when they come from his ingenious hands."

John was appointed administrator in 1919 of the estate of Matilda Ann Gilbert, deceased.

March 1919 Laird items - J. W. Gilbert is now located on the Jack Harrison farm.

January 23, 1936

"The entire community was shocked to learn of the tragic death of Jack Gilbert, Sr., Friday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert went up to Denver Sunday of last week and there purchased a car and were driving it home. When they were within a few miles of Flagler, for some reason unknown, the ar overturned a couple of times on the highway. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert were thrown out thru the top of the car and were seriously injured. They were taken to Flagler by passing motorists for medical aid, and where Mr. Gilbert passed away an hour and a half later. Mrs. Gilbert was brought on to Kirk in the Shaw ambulance, and Saturday morning was taken to a hospital at Norton Kansas, in the Morris ambulance, accompanied by her niece, Mrs. Thomas Ward, and Dr. Blanchard, and at this writing her condition is considered critical.
Funeral services for Mr. Gilbert were held from the Kirk school auditorium Sunday afternoon under the direction of the Morris Mortuary of Yuma. Rev. Starr of Vona officiated. A mixed quartet consisting of T.D. McLean, Mrs. John Wixon, Mrs. John Shively and Albert Pound, with Mrs. Edgar Davis at the piano, furninshed the music. The remains were laid to rest in the Kirk cemetery.

John William Gilbert was born at Washington, Kansss in 1874 and passed away January 17, 1936 at Flagler, being at the time of his death 61 years, 7 months and 28 days of age. He was the son of Samuel N. and Matilda Ann Gilbert. Jack came with his parents to Laird, Colorado from Washington, Kansas when a small boy and later in life operated a barber shop and meat market there. In September 1902 he was united in marriage to Etta Steele at Auburn, Nebraska. In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert came to Kirk where they opened a barber shop and restaurant, and which business they continued to operate at the time of his passing.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Etta Steele Gilbert, and one brother, Samuel W. and family of Kirk. His partent, three sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. More than 500 people attended the funeral services and followed the remains to the cemetery, attesting the high esteem in which the decesaseed was held. F.L. Williams, W.A. Thompson, Lloyd Amy, M.C. Higgason, H.D. Neikirk, and H.K. Clark acted as pallbearers. Among the floral contributions was a beautiful piece from the Kirk Community.
Among those from away to come here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ward of Norton, Kansas, the latter a niece of Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Eva Rhodus of Peru, Nebraska, a sister of Mrs. Gilbert, Walter Steele of Norton, Kansas, a brother of Mrs. Gilbert.... and many others.

On January 30, Mrs. Gilbert was in a hospital at Norton, Kansas.

February 6, 1936

Etta is buried in Kirk, 1882-1936 # 67354460, with J.W. 1874-1936 # 67354461.

March 1936 "Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ward were out from Norton Kansas last Thursday on business and spent the night at the Sam Gilbert home. Mr. Ward has been appointed administrator of the estate of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Gilbert and it is hoped the restaurant and barber shop will soon be opened."
