Two oldest, John and Andrew, died on the same day when Andrew went down in a well they were digging and was overcome by fumes. John went in to save him and was also overcome by the fumes. "

Mildred Schinkel was born Feb 11, 1904 in Pope County, Minnesota to father Schinkel and mothr Baker.
In 1910 Pope County, Henry Schinkel is 40, Elizabeth 25, Mildred E. 6.
Mildred was in Washington County, Colorado in 1920, 15, born in Minnesota, with mother Elizabeth 35 born in Illinois.

Elizabeth's parents George and Anna Baker were farming in WSashington COunty in 1920.
They were in Washington County in 1940, too, George 92, Anna 82, and Ella 53.

In 1939 "News from Aberdeen, Maryland that little Wanda Mae Young, daughter of Mrs Mildred Young" was suffering from rheumatic fever.
May 17, 1962 "Mrs. Mildred Young had recently suffered a heart attack at her presnet home in Alabama. She is recovering but still unable to work. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Scinkel of Denver, is at present with her."

1965 "Mrs. Mildred Young of Houston, Texas, visited friends here (Joes) on Thursday and at the Young Brothers home until Friday."

Dorothy June Young was born April 12, 1923 at eibert, dying December q14, 1999 as Dorothy Weatherford.
She died at Roseville, California.

Melvin Eugene Young was born at Seibert Colorado October 30, 1921 to John D. Young and Louise G. Sorensen, dying May 16, 1994.

Elizabeth Louise Young was born May 14, 1926 at Denver, dying as Elizabeth Northcott March 2, 1989.
She died in Sacramento County, California.

In 1930 Wray, John is managing a chain store, 31, born in California. Louise G. is 30 born in Iowa, Robert Lee 9, Melvin E. 8, Dorothy 7, and Elizabeth 3., all kids born in Colorado.

In 1940 Pampa, Texas, Erfil V. Ward is 30, born in Oklahoma, with Bernice M. 27 born in Nebraska. Both were in Yuma in 1935.

May 25, 1977 Pampa Texas A one-room schoolhouse on the prairie is more than a bit of Americana to Pampa's Bernice Ward-it's reality. Mrs. Ward, who retires this week as mathematics teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School, began her teaching career on the Colorado plains in the '30's. "My family has a ranch near Joes, and I taught a one-room school just a mile away. I walked back and forth," she recalls. Morning chores at the school for the II - year - old teacher included building a coal fire in the stove. She and the children brought sack lunches, and during dust storms found home going a bit of a problem. "Most of the parents came for their children in wagons, and I sometimes followed a fence to get home, "she said. She taught grades one through eight; supplies and books were scarce. School terms lasted eight months. Between sessions she'd go to Greeley to study toward her degree in elementary education at the University of Northern Colorado. After two years of teaching in the little school, she married the late E. V. Ward, also a teacher. The following year they moved to Pampa, and Mr. Ward was principal at Miami for more than two years. After her husband decided to open a cabinet shop here (Ward's Cabinet Shop, now Cray's Decorating Center), she limited her teaching duties to working as a substitute, allowing herself time to serve as bookkeeper for the family business. It was after Mr. Ward's death 13 years ago that she resumed her teaching career on a full-time basis. She's been at Horace Mann for 11 years. She has definite ideas about her chosen field, mathematics. "I think students need basic math — we've never gone entirely to modern math here." Her eyes twinkle as she speaks of retirement plans — she's going back to the Colorado ranch. "My son. Robert, and two of my brothers, Alton and Clifford Young, still operate the family ranch. My brothers are bachelors, and I'll keep house for them and have time for crafts. Right now I'm interested in copper enameling." The 24-section ranch is well known to residents of the area, she said, because of its big red barn complete with storybook cupolas. "It's a landmark." she said. But the move north is met with mixed emotions. "I've been in Pampa since 1938." she said. "All my roots and my friends are here. Certainly I'll be coming and going back and forth — I'll be here a good part of the time." A member of First United Methodist Church and Gamma conclave. Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority, she is a former member of the Paint, Pot and Fiddlers’ Club and Pampa Art Club. In addition to her son, Robert, she has two grandchildren. Mrs. Ward was honored recently by Horace Mann PTA and staff members at a tea in the Hospitality Room of Citizens Bank and trust Co. Sam Begert, Horace Mann principal, spoke warmly of Mrs. Ward's years as a teacher. "Anything 1 could say about her would be good," he said. She feels ready for retirement. "I want to relax and enjoy life — work at crafts, have it good time. "But I've often thought of all those years when I was keeping books at the cabinet shop - I continued to teach as a substitute. It seemed to me I was intended to be a teacher. "God must have planned it that way." June 12, 1932 May 28, 1934 Greeley "Mrs. Ida J. Bowman, 51 years old, well-known rural school teacher of Weld county, died Sunday following a two weeks illness. Mrs. Bowman had just completed seven years as principal of the Hazolton school, five miles west of Greeley, and had accepted a contract for next year at the same school. Prior to that she had served as principal of tho grade and high schools at Carr and at Orout, in Weld county. Coming to Greeley in 1910, Mrs. Bowman, with her husband and family, settled on a small tract and raised her children. When all but the youngest had completed: school, she herself enrolled and graduated from Teachers college. Mrs. Bowman, then Ida Belle Jordan, prepared for a teaching career. She was married, August 7, 1901, to Edgar A. Bowman, who died six? years ago as the result of an automobile accident. Her scholastic records were burned in a fire which razed the academy some years after her graduation and she was required to enter the preparatory school at the college, from which she was almost immediately sent into the higher institution as the result of mental and achievement test scores of high rank. Mr. and Mra. Bowman celebrated their silver wedding anniversary just a few mouths before his death. They had five children, one boy dying In Infancy. The other four survive. Jane Marian, the youngest, who graduates from Junior high this year, was living at home. Charles J. and Goorge B. Bowman live in Greeley and Mrs. Ethel Nikkel is a resident of Abarr. Three sisters are living, Mrs. Emma Bhema and Mrs. Janr, W?egel of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. Margaret Wadsworth of Los Angeles. Mrs. Bowman was born at Washington, Pa., December 2, 1882. Her first home was a house which was partially built of logs. Whilo her condition was regarded as serious but not critical she died suddenly at 1 o'clock Sunday morning. She was suffering from bronchial' pneumonia and complications. Baptized in the Christian church Mrs. Bowman joined the United Presbyterian church upon her arrival here. She was a teacher of children's and adult classes for many years in the Bible school. She served as president of the Aid group at the church and filled various other offices in the church organizations. " January 11, 2000 "J. Leonard Nikkel of Denver, a certified life underwriter, died Jan. 11. He was 91. Services were Monday at Fairmount's Little Ivy Chapel. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery. He was born June 9, 1908, in Joes. On June 12, 1932, he married Ethel Elizabeth Bowman. She preceded him in death. He then married Bernice Marion Ward on Oct. 3, 1982. He was a certified life underwriter for Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York. He was a building representative for Windsor Gardens building No. 26, and president of Windsor Gardens Newcomer Club, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the George Washington Lodge and the El Jebel Shrine. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Laurel Ann Walters, Colorado Springs; a son, William Howard, Boulder; a brother, William G., Yuma; a sister, Martha Milsap, El Cajon, Calf.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren." One SSDI record has Bernice M. Nikkel born July 11, 1912, dying November 4, 2006. Laurel (Laurie) Walters, age 74, of Colorado Springs and a native of Colorado, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Laurel Ann Nikkel, the first of two children, was born on March 27, 1939, in Yuma, Colorado to the late J. Leonard and Ethel Bowman Nikkel. Her family moved to Denver when she was 2 and she attended Denver South HS where she was Student Council Vice President and Section Leader of Concert Choir. A Boettcher scholar, Laurie attended the University of Colorado, Boulder where she was a Distributed Studies major in Math, Physics and Chemistry. While at CU Laurie was active in her Delta Gamma sorority and she met her husband, Jack, who was a Sigma Chi. They were married on December 30, 1958 at University Park Methodist Church. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in 1961. Laurie worked for the United States Census Bureau from 1974-2000. She retired following her service as a Field Operations Supervisor for the 2000 census. She received promotions and achievement awards for superior performance, and was recognized for 20 years of service in June, 1995. Laurie actively volunteered in many organizations, including St. Paul's United Methodist Church (Board of Trustees, Reception Committee, Choirs, Bible Studies and Sunday school), Delta Gamma Alumni and Girl Scouts of America. Singing and performing was her passion, but she also enjoyed travelling the world with family and close friends, sharing life and special events with her family (especially the grandkids), gardening, interior decorating, sewing, watching and caring for birds, playing bridge and doing crafts. Laurie had a strong will and lived each day to its fullest. She battled and beat cancer in 1989, and then fought it again from 2011-13. She always smiled and had few complaints. When asked how she maintained such a positive outlook she would respond "what other choice is there?" Laurie is survived by her husband of 54 years, John "Jack" Walters; two children: Jay Walters of Denver and Lisa Walther (husband Jim) of Broomfield. She has six grandchildren: John "Billy" Walters (wife Danielle) of Tucson, AZ, Ashley Walters and Tiffany Walters of Phoenix, AZ, and Jack Walther, Juliana Walther and Karinne Walther all of Broomfield, CO. She is also survived by her brother, Bill Nikkel, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, John Walters (wife Dawn), of Phoenix, AZ. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
