In 1900 Norton County, Kansas, P.L. Shirley born Sept 1846 in Indiana, married 31 years to Lottie July 1851, Ohio - no occupation. They have sons Wm. July 1875 Indiana, J. A. Sep 1877 Indiana, O.D. May 1882 Indiana, F.E. April 1888 Kansas, and daughter M.A. Nov 1890 Nebraska.

In 1910 Hale precinct, Philemon L. Shirley is 63, born in Indiana, widowed, a farm laborer. In 1910 Hale precinct, Owen is 27, born in Indiana, married two years to Pearl 22, born in Kansas. Next household is William 34 born in Indiana, married eight years to Zilpha 31 Kansas, with Nil L. 7 Kansas, Luella P. 4 Kansas, and William V. 1 Colorado.

  William proved up a quarter in 30, 4S 42W in 1912, and Owen two in 29 and 30 in 1913. Philemon proved up one in 30 in 1913, witnesses Clinton Browning of Armel, Edward Browning, H.P. Wileya nd Harvey R. Sheldon all of Jaqua, Kansas.

1910 "School is now in progress in the district south of Armel with Mrs. O. Shirley as teacher.

 

1914 "Mrs. Owen Shirley closed a very successful term of school in the Browning district Friday."

In 1920 Lydia Shirley is 68, born in Ohio, living with son Fred in Norton County, Kansas. She's with them in 1925, too. She must be the Lydia Shirley in the Norton cemetery 1851-1928 # 49993057.

In 1920 William and Zilpha are in McDonald County, Missouri, with Nil 17, Luella 13, Vergil 11, and Lydia 8.

William 1875-1942 and Zilpha Violet (Mittan) Shirely 1878-1968 are buried in Barry County Missouri # 103174299


Virgil William Shirley, 92, of Monett, died at 2 a.m. today, November 16, 2000 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, following a brief illness. Mr. Shirley was born July 9, 1908, in Yuma, Colorado, the son of William M. and Violett Mittan Shirley. He was retired from the Ford Agency in Monett and was a Methodist. He married Ruby Faye Highbarger on August 25, 1933, in Butterfield. Survivors include three sons,of Phoenix, Arizona, of Monett, and Jeral Shirley of Neosho - (died 2001); 14 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, and two great grand grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Leoma Michael; one brother, Nial Shirley; and two sisters, Luella Russell and Lydia Highbarger. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 19, at Bennett-Wormington Chapel in Monett with Rev. Billy Gentry officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Butterfield under the direction of Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home of Monett.

One tree said that Owen Delbert Shirley born 1882 in Phillips County Kansas, died July 1965 in Coffey County, Kansas.
