In 1834 John Kirkland, 30, a shoemaker, Sarah 29, with Henry 7, John 6, William 5, Edmund 3, and Sarah 1, arrived in New York.
In 1900 Lansing precinct, Edmund Kirkland, born Sept 1831 in England, married 42 years to Amelia Feb 1829 Canada, is farming.
Amelia proved up a quarter in 5, 4S 42W in 1903.
Charles cash-claimed a quarter in 6, 4S 42W in 1891, and then proved up another quarter in 1894.
In 1900 Charles born April 1861 in Canada, married 14 years to Martha Oct 1861, Indiana, have Robert E. Jan 1890 and Nellie M. March 1895, both in Colorado.
All four are still there in 1910.
Robert E. Kirkland married Lennia M. Gilbert Dec 23, 1916, recorded in Kit Carson County. She's probably the Malinda Gilbert in Linn County Kansas in 1900, born July 1898 in Kansas, with parents William Feb 1859 Illinois and Lydia L. July 1860 Indiana. Siblings are Nettie June 1886, Nancy April 1888, Howard Sept 1890, Sidney Nov 1892, Sarah Jan 1895, and Mary July 1898.
Nana Gilbert married Harley Garrett in 1908 in Ponca City.
Lydia Luella (Horner) Gilbert 1860-1907 is buried in Lincoln County, per 132570800. William E. is in Grand Junction Colorado in 1920, 60, with daughter Sarah L. Carroll, 25, her husband Charles F. Carroll, and their three kids.
In 1910 Ponca City, Oklahoma, William 57 is widowed, with Nana A. 22 Garett, Howard D. Gilbert 19, Sidney S. 17, Sadie S. 15, Mary O. 11 and Malinda O. 11.
In 1920, all on the same census page, Robert E. is married to Malina O. 21, born in Kansas, with Robert E. Jr. 2. Nellie is with Charles and Martha, teaching school, and Charles has a hired man, Carl E. Busby, 23 (the Busby family were long-time neighbors). Carl Elliot Busby was born Dec 23, 1896 in Armel, father J. Busby.
Nellie Kirkland married Carl "Bushby" Sept 5, 1920, recorded in Kit Carson County.
Martha and Charles are in Cheyenne County Kansas in 1925.
In 1930 Carl E. 33 and Nellie M. 35 Busby are farming, with Mervin 8 and Raymond 6.
In 1940 Armel precinct, Carl is 43, Nellie 45, with Mervin 18, Raymond 16, Lois 9, and Carol 7. Two school teachers are lodging with them.
| Charles C. Kirkland -
Has Grown Large and Profitable Crops in Yuma County. The above gentleman is another of the many pioneers who have made farming and the cattle business a huge success in Yuma county. Mr. Kirkland is a native of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, where he was born in 1861. When five years of age he moved with his parents to Illinois, where he received his education and grew to manhood. In 1879 the young man went to Nebraska, where he engaged in farming for eight years. Then he came to Colorado and located in that portion of Arapahoe county that is now a part of Yuma county. He entered homestead and pre- emption claims thirty miles south-east of Wray and proceeded to improve his 320 acres of raw, prairie land. Mr. Kirkland was in very moderate circumstances, but he faced his new responsibilities with a courage and untiring industry that soon commenced to achieve gratifying results. He engaged in general farming, as well as cattle and hogs, and fortune smiled upon his efforts until the drought, when he endured two years of trials and discouragements. Since then, however, his progress has been most cheering. He has 200 acres under cultivation and grows fine crops of wheat, corn, oats, cane and vegetables. He has garnered twenty bushels of wheat per acre, thirty bushels of corn and three tons of cane per acre. In 1902 he threshed 2,200 bushels of wheat, and had a bountiful yield of other crops. At present he owns sixteen horses, thirty cattle and a herd of thirty hogs. Last year Mr. Kirkland erected a handsome residence, which would be a credit to farm life in any state. The main building is 18x28 feet in size, with a wing 16x18 feet, and it is furnished with every comfort requisite in a contented and happy home. In 1886 Mr. Kirkland married Miss Martha McCulloch, an estimable Nebraska lady, who has cheered and assisted him with signal devotion in fighting the battle of life. They have two interesting children. Fraternally Mr. Kirkland is a member of the A.O.U.W. He is a genial, honorable gentleman, who is public spirited and generous hearted and he well merits the general esteem in which he is held, as well as the pronounced popularity he has achieved. |

2014 Raymond Roy Busby - Survived by children Connie McLain, Randy Busby and Carla Busby, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren (with one on the way) and sister Carol (Richard) Shaver. Preceded in death by wife Gladys, his brother, sister and parents. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels for 30 years, was a member of the ELKS and the Forest Service Retiree Group "The Amigos". He enjoyed playing senior softball and bowling. He will be lovingly remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Volunteers... Buried in Crown Hill # 133557153.
