Most of what you say is true; however, in working with a gal from Friend, Saline County ,Nebraska...I was told that there is no record of James dying in Nebraska, but instead in Friend, Arapahoe [now Yuma] County, Colorado...unfortunately, there is no Friend in Colorado now. James and 3 friends apparently stopped in Friend, NE, as James' parents lived there in 1880,and died there in Friend, Turkey Creek Twp,
Saline County, Nebraska...he may have lived there for a period of time, but by 1886 these four men went to Colorado and named a town, Friend, CO, commemorating the town that they had come from in Nebraska...Friend, CO was a "Boom Town"
for awhile, anticipating the railroad coming through!! Among other jobs, James was a Deputy Sheriff...it has been reported that he died," Per oral family history told by Belle's daughters, death due to gunshots in apprehension of an outlaw." There is no written statement to that effect!
But it was indeed the wild wild west back then!! The town itself closed down in a hurry, when word that the railroad would NOT be coming through!....The city fathers sold off ALL the buildings and by 1901-1904, Friend, CO became a 'Ghost town'!! I worked closely with gals from Yuma County, Colorado and the 'finds' that I now have, have shown through from paperwork that they have helped me find...there would be no reason for them to have info. on James in Colorado, if he'd died in Nebraska!!

I am not a relative of James W. Dudgeon, but have an interest because of an old Marlin-Ballard single shot rifle (circa mid 1880's) that is said to have belonged to him. I was told that his great-great grandson brought the rifle into a gun shop in Greenville, North Carolina for sale (I believe the original poster of this thread was from that shop). I purchased the rifle from that shop and have the same information as the original poster.

The rifle came in a beaded Plains Indian scabbard of brain-tanned leather. The rifle is a very heavy barrel long range affair that would have served well in Nebraska or Colorado. I would like to communicate with anyone related to James W. Dudgeon, the great-great grandson being a plus of course. Anyone with information or history is also welcome and I am willing to share pictures, etc. of this grand old rifle if interested. I am a collector of these old rifles (or the current caretaker for future generations as some would say) and would love to leave some history with this oldie.
