 Charles B. and Ellen (Porter) Sharp, Kirk


Charles is in Cleveland, Ohio in 1850, eighteen months old, with Clayton 34 a millwright, and Eliza 33. Jeptha is 15, Volney 4,.

Edwin Porter and Charlotte Hoadley had married in 1841 in Columbia, Ohio.

In 1850 Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin is 31, Charlott 32, Franklin 11, Sophia 8, Harriet 6, Samuel O. 3, and Sophronia A. newborn.

In 1860 Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin Porter is 43, Mary 43, Sophia Porter 19, Mary Porter nine months. Sophia Spindle is 8 (perhaps Mary's daughter?)
Catherine Poker is 62, born in Germany.

Ellen Porter's mother Charlotte died in 1856, and is buried in Olmsted Falls, Ohio # 29815910.

In 1870 Cuyahoga County, Edwin and Mary are both 53, Ella 16, and Amelia 9.


Clayton Sharp and Eliza Jane are in Cuyahoga County in 1870, with Charles 21 and Walter 16.

Jeannette Sharp was in the 1880 census of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, nine months old, with Charles 28, Ella 26, Lewis 8, Fanny 6, Clayton 3, all born in Ohio. Ella's father Edwin Porter is 64, born in Massachusetts.

Charles B. Sharp proved up two quarters in section 27, 5S 48W, in 1916.

Charles B. Sharp is in Yuma County in 1920, 71, with Ella S. 66. Simeon is 28, Nathan 25, all four born in Ohio.
Ella died in 1928, buried in Kirk # 114283427
"Mrs. Charles B. Sharp, long-time resident of Yuma County, died at the family home southeast of Joes, Wednesday of last week at the age of 74 years, eight months and 28 days. She was born in Olmstead, Ohio, October 3, 1853 and moved to Yuma County with her husband about 30 years ago. The couple celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage seven years back. The deceased leaves her husband and a number of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to mourn her departure.
Funeral Services were held at the family home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Rev. R.B. Courtner, pastor of the Mount Olivet Church, officiating and the interment was at the Kirk Cemetery."
Charles is widowed in 1930 Kit Carson County, 81 and Simeon 38 is with him.

One tree said Charles Burley Sharp died in October 1931, at Vona, Colorado.

CLAYTON

Clayton R. Sharp, 30, married Lyda Gertrude Andrews on January 30, 1908 in Yuma County.

Clayton R. Sharp, 53, married Martha Ritchem Bauder Allman in Cuyahoga County on July 16, 1930.

LEWIS

In 1900 York County, Nebraska Louis is 28, married five years to Alta Sept 1878 born in Nebraska.

Lewis is a barber in 1910 Cheyenne, Wyoming, 38, with Alta 32 and Beryl 7.

They're in Spink County, South Dakota in 1920, Louis C. 47, Alra R. 42, and Winona B. 16.
Alta's father Levi Bentenbaugh, 73, born in Pennsylvania, is widowed.

Levi is buried in Seward County, Nebraska 1846..

So is Alta Rose (Beuterbaugh) Sharp 1877-1927 # 175134990.

L.C. Sharp married Minnie Carlow on February 18, 1931 in Arapahoe County.

1920 Montrose, Colorado "Mrs. L. C. Sharp, sister of Matt Arch, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arch for a few days, left for her home at Paonia Friday afternoon."

1934 Eagle, Colorado

Lewis, born March 1, 1873 in Hocking County, Ohio, died in Kerrville Texas on Feb 15, 1936.
His body was to be removed to Eagle, Colorado.


FANNIE

Vernon E. Ryel proved up a quarter in section 23, 5S 48W in 1917.

Fannie Sharp Ryel is buried in Kirk # 103180142, with Vernon Eli Ryel 1872-1959 # 67354684.

"Mrs. V. Ryal died at a Denver hospital Tuesday, April 14, 1925 and was brought home for burial. The funeral was held Saturday, April 18. Mrs. Ryal had been quite ill for some time and was taken to Denver for an operation. She was thought to have stood the operation fine but soon took a decided change for the worse and died Tuesday evening. She was well known in this vicinity and will be greatly missed by her neighbors and friends."

"Graveside services for Vernon E. Ryel, 87, who died April 2, 1959 in Denver were held Monday at the Kirk cemetery. Rev. Anderson officiated at the service and a male quartet sang hymns. Pall bearers were Frank Huppert, Alton Young, Harry Hill, Ray Reynolds, Jesse Rogers and Wm. Rogers. Vernon E. Ryel was born January 3, 1872 at Berea, Ohio, and passed away April 2, 1959 in Denver. He was married to Fannie Sharp June 24, 1897. She preceded him in death, April 19, 1925 [s/b April 14, 1925]. They came to Colorado in 1906 and homesteaded near Kirk. Three sons were born to this union, Lloyd, Rollie and Nerva. Lloyd preceded him in death August 5, 1945. He is survived by two sons, Rollie R. Ryel of Geneva, Ohio, and Nerva E. Ryel of Denver; three sisters, Alice Richards of Cleveland, Ohio, Cordia Hudson of Conneant, Ohio, and Metta Moorman of Santa Barbara, California. There are also nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren who survive him."

"Relatives here from a distance for the Ryel funeral were as follows: Mry and Mrs. Nerva Ryel and son David of Denver, Mrs. Buelah Ryel and son Errol his wife and daughter Jeanne of Greeley, Mrs. Eam Mae Poage of LeGrande, Wyoming, Mrs. Carrie Helzer from Nebraska, and Mrs. Artie Sharp of Denver."


So is their son Nerva "Nerva Ryel, youngest son of Vern and Fanny Ryel, was born near Kirk October 31, 1912, and departed this life April 1, 1966, at the age of 53 years, five months and one day. Nerva received his education at Golden Gate grade school and Joes high school. He farmed with his father before going to Minturn, where he worked on a ranch and mined for Empire Zinc. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and has made his home in Denver since his discharge. He was an electrician for Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad for 21 years. He was a member of Highland Lodge No. 86, AF and AM; El Jebel, O.E.S., and Highlands Commandery No. 30, Knights Templar. Nerva suffered a stroke January 20 and was hospitalized six weeks and had since been cared for at Parkside Nursing Home in Denver. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Carl, and two brothers, Lloyd and Rollie. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sherri Jean Berlin of Seattle, Washington; a son, David, of Vancouver, Washington; a grandson, Jeff Berlin; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Ryel of Greeley and Clara Ryel of Geneva, Ohio; two aunts, Mrs. Artie Sharp of Aurora and Mrs. Carrie Helzer of Dakota City, Nebraska, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were held April 6 at Olinger Mortuary in Denver and burial was made that afternoon at Kirk with Highland Commandery No. 30, Knights Templar officiating. Burial was made that afternoon at Kirk with Masonic Committal.
CARRIE

Carrie Sharp Helzer 1888-1973 is buried in Burt County, Nebraska # 126955919
"Carrie was the daughter of Charles B. & Ellen (Porter) Sharp, Ohio natives. Her father was a carpenter and the family moved from Ohio to York county, NE in the late 1890's. Her parents moved to Yuma county, Colorado where her mother died in 1928, her father was still living in Kit Carson county, CO in 1930.
Carrie married John Helzer around 1907 (probably in York county, NE) They lived in York county for a few years and then moved to Milford, NE. Around 1919, they moved to a farm in Kit Carson county, CO, probably following her parents. John went back to work for the railroad in the 1920's and they lived in the Winnebago, NE area of Thurston county until the late 1930's when the railroad job moved them to Oakland, NE.
John and Carrie had children: Charles H., Howard, Irene A., Betty Jane, and John Wesley (died 2002, buried in Oakland Cemetery)."


SIMEON

1928 Kirk items "Floyd Ryel and Sim Sharp drove to Canon City in search of a load of apples. They returned saturday, but we failed o learn about the apples."

Simeon Sharp 1892-1946 is buried in Eagle County # 58573485.
"Funeral services were held in Eagle Thursday morning for Simeon Sharp, who died suddenly early Monday morning, following a heart attack in the Sharp Cafe in Eagle.
Mr. Sharp for the past 16 years a resident of Eagle, had apparently been in good health, and the attack struck him about 5:30 Monday morning. He was found ill in the back part of the cafe when George Carlow came in to open the cafe for the day. Shortly after Mr. Carlow came in, Mr. Sharp fell unconscious and died 20 minutes later, before a doctor could be summoned - there was, by the way, no doctor in town.
Born in Olmstead, Ohio, on April 19, he had resided in Colorado since early childhood, living on the eastern slope until 16 years ago, when he joined his brother L. C. Sharp, in Eagle, who preceded him in death. He has been associated in business with Mr. Carlow in the cafe and in Sharp's pool hall for a number of years, and has made a host of friends during his residence here. He was quiet, unassuming, attending strictly to his own affairs, and never had a bad word to say of any one.
Burial was in the Eagle cemetery Thursday morning.
Surviving are two sisters, Nettie Weaver of Idaho Springs and Carrie Helzer of Oakland, Neb.; and two brothers, Nathan of Denver, and Clayton of Detroit, Mich. Mrs. Weaver and Nathan Sharp came to Eagle to be present at the funeral."

NATHAN

1929 Eagle, Colorado "Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Sharp and Mr. Sim Sharp of Joes, Colo., were in Eagle over the week-end visiting the gentlemen's brother, L. C. Sharp. They are looking for a new location and viewed some property in this vicinity, but left Sunday without having made a decision to locate here."

April 1930 Joes items "The Nathan Sharp family were in Joes Monday, en route to their new home in Kentucky. This was formerly Mrs. Sharp's home and they expect to reside among her people."

Nathan E. Sharp is in Kit Carson County in 1940, a laborer for the WPA, with Artie M. 37 born in Kentucky, Hubert 19 in Kentucky, Burleigh 17 in Kentucky, and Zora E. 12 in Colorado.

June 1940 "Joes is to have a picture show on Friday night of each week. Nathan Sharp, of the Vona country, owns the machine. "Timber War" is the picture to be shown next Friday. It is a James Oliver Curweed story and should be interesting. The show may be held in the bus barn which has been rented from the school district by Joe White for the state highway patrol headquarters."

Burleigh D. Sharp is buried in Davenport, Iowa # 125718098 " Burleigh D. Sharp, of Davenport, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Genesis East Medical Center. Per his request, there will be no visitation or services. Cremation rites were accorded. Inurnment will be at a later date in Davenport Memorial Park. The Runge Mortuary is assisting his family with arrangements.
Burleigh was born February 3, 1923, in Holly Hill, Ky., the son of Nathan and Artie Mae (Perkins) Sharp. At age five, Burleigh's family moved to Eagle, Colo. He was raised in Vona, Colo., and graduated from Seibert High School in 1941. He then moved to Davenport. During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard aboard the U.S.S. Triton in the North Atlantic. He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict aboard the U.S.S. Alfred E. Cunningham. He was united in marriage to Inez Kroeger on April 15, 1943, in Kahoka, Mo. In his earlier years, Burleigh worked at Victor Animatograph. He retired from M.A. Ford Mfg. Co. after 32 years as a file cutter/tool grinder. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 64 years, Inez, Davenport; son, Terry (Lana) Sharp, Davenport; daughter, Judy (Jim) Walter, Halfway, Mo.; brother, Herbert (Alice) Sharp, Triadelphia, W.Va.; sister, Zona Clark, Aurora, Colo; grandchildren, Tracy Richards, Jennifer Shook, James Walter, Greg Walter and Kyle Sharp; and great-grandchildren, Jaron, Bella, Kaitlyn, Julia and Tommy. His parents preceded him in death."

JEANNETTE
Jeannettie Weaver 1879-1964 is buried in Wheat Ridge, Colorado # 117447019, with Thomas H. Weaver1874-1966 # 117446949.
