Smart, Pleasant Valley



1892 Camillus, New York, are George M. Smart, 32, Mary M. 33, Elsie 8, Ernest 7, Ethel 5, Marion 3.

Also on the page is Margaret Smart 33.
1905 Camillus precinct, Onondaga County. Mary is 45, Ernest H. 20, Marion A. 16, George S. 15, and Elmer S. 10. Her father William H. Hudson 73 is with them.

1910 Yuma County, next to Henry and James Josh, Ernest Smart is 25, born in New York, farming living alone.

1921 George Smart recently had the misfortune to break his arm by falling from a horse.

1927 Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Josh and children, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harding, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Harding, Edward and Lovene Harding were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smart Sunday.

1935 Norris Josh returned recently from a visit with relatives in New York. His cousins, Alfred and Lester Smart, returned with him for an extended visit.”

Ernest Hudson Smart born April 7, 1885, farming in Yuma County for WWI registration.
In 1900 he’s in New York with parents, including a sister Elsie. Elsie is married to John Chapman in 1910 Onondaga County, New York.

Ernest Smart proved up two quarters in 35, 5N 46W in 1914. That would be about half-way between the Pleasant Valley church and the Wages church. James E. Josh proved up the two quarters north of his, also in 1914. Willard H. Chapman and Emma U. Chapman had timber-claimed two quarters just north of James Josh, but in 1898.

Ernest is farming in Yuma County in 1920, 36, with Cora A. 28, William E. 8, George H. 5 all three born in Nebraska, Alfred L. 3 and Lester F. 1 were born in COlorado. On the same page is Leonard J. Chapman 32 born in New York, with his wife Margaret 26,. Grover iBorthers Grover 28, Richard 20 and Isaac J. 18 are with him.

In 1930 Ernest is back in Onondaga County, NY, working in an axle factory, 44, Cora 39, William 18, George 16, Alfred 14, Lester 12, Howard 10, Robert 7, Vernon 3, and Elnora 1.

1940 Onondaga county, Ernest is a storekeeper, 55, Cora 49, Rober 18, Vernon 13, Elinora 12, and Grace 9.

Ernest Hudson Smart and Cora Adelia Josh married January 1911 in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada.

One tree said Cora died May 9, 1931 in Camillus, Onondaga County, NY

Lester F. Smart, 78, of 3465 Warners Road, Camillus, died Saturday at St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A native of Yuma, Colo., Mr. Smart lived in Camillus since 1937. He was formerly employed at Solvay Process Company, retiring in 1978 after 37 years.
Mr. Smart was a former member of the Belle Isle United Methodist Church and of United Steel Workers Local 12457. He served with the Army during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received at Normandy in August of 1944.
Surviving are his brother, Robert L. of Camillus; two sisters, Eleanor De Dona of Fairmount and Grace Thompson of Camillus; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Robert L. Smart , 78, of Camillus,died Sunday in Community-General Hospital.
Born in Yuma, Colo., he lived in the Amboy-Belle Isle area since 1937. He retired in 1982 after 40 years as a loader with Allied Chemical Corp., Solvay. He was a former member of Belle Isle United Methodist Church and Local 12457, United Steelworkers of America. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors: Two sisters, Eleanor DeDona of Fairmount and Grace Thompson of Camillus.

75781297 Elinor (Smart) DeDona, 82, of Fairmount, passed away Monday at Upstate University Hospital at Community General. Born in Syracuse, she was a graduate of Crouse School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse at Crouse Hospital followed by Community General Hospital for over 30 years before retiring in 1980. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and playing cards. Elinor was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in 2007. Surviving are her daughter, Marilyn Theresa DeDona, of Fairmount and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME. Burial will be in Belle Isle Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 2601 Milton Ave. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., PO Box 3049 Syracuse, NY 13220-3049. He was identified by police as William H. Smart, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Smart of the Amboy-Warners Rd., Camillus RD I. Baldwinsville Police Chief John Commane and Patrolmen Theodore Abbott and Curtis Root said the boy had been with his] sister and brother-in-law, Mr. j and Mrs. Sherwood B. Skiff of j Camillus, when he sank from! sight about 30 feet offshore. ' j Authorities reported the boy had been twimming in the river off the village bathing beach about a quarter mile west of the dam. The bathing beach has not opened for the .season, Chief Commane said, and no lifeguard was on duty. Baldwinsville Fire Chief Howard Harrington dispatched volunteers to the scene minutes after the alarm was sounded at 7:30 pjn. and they were joined a shori time later by firefighters from Liverpool Lyncourt, Matty-dale, Seneca River, Plainville, and Belgium-Cold Springs. The volunteers and their boats were u^der direction of Roger Mason of the Baldwinsville* Rescue Squad. Widow of George Smart, died Monday at her home in Belle Isle.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Elsie A. Chapman of Lakeland; three sons, Ernest H. Smart of Yuma, Col.; Marion A. Smart of Warners and Elmer S.
