Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:
Mack Leonard, Waverly
Mack proved up a quarter in 33, 4N 46 W in 1899, witnesses John A. Conley, Goggin H. Hatcher, Lester D. Castle, and William A. McNichols (all well-known).
Mack J. Leonard filed for a Timber claim in 9N 43W - that would be in Phillips County, east of Holyoke.
But BLM records show that as a MARK J. Leonard. Mark J. Leonard also proved up a quarter in 9N 43W in 1893.
Mark J. Leonard, age 34, married Jennie E. Smith, age 28, February 5, 1891 in Sedgwick County, performed by minister W.S. Hampton of Grant, Nebraska.
"MARRIED - At the residence of the bride's parents in Sedgwick County,
February 5th, Mr. Mark Leonard and Miss Jennie Smith. About fifteen of
the boys serenaded them and Mark invited the boys in and set up the
***** cigars ***** style.
"
"Mark" could not have filed legally for a second quarter, so they are likely two different people.
November 3, 1899 "O.L. Hamsher, James Sheedy, and Leonard Smith attended the Mack Leonard sale Wednesday."
"James Sheedy purchased 6 head of cows at Mack Leonard's sale Wednesday."
Mack was paid $10.50 for three days as a juror in 1899, so he was a citizen.
Mack was delinquent in taxes for his quarter in 1903.
Perhaps "Mack" was a nickname for one of the sons of William Leonard.....
Charles A. Leonard had cash-claimed a quarter in 3, 2S 44W in 1891 - that's by Lansing.
In 1920 Charles N. Leonard proved up on a quarter in 9, 2N 43W - north of Laird.
James H. Leonard proved up a quarter in 10, 2S 44W in 1897, and timber-claimed on in 1900.
William P. Leonard proved up two quarters in 14 and 23, 2N 45W in 1920.
Delia M. Leonard married J.D. Coffman January 1884 in Iowa County.
Sherman Scott Leonard, son of William Leonard and Emma Croft, married Lottie Mikles age 16, on April 11, 1915 in Appanoose County, Iowa.
