Sanford Edmond CUMLEY, was born March 27, 1861 in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Missouri to Hiram and Nancy Jane Mattox Comly. The surname was variously spelled Cumly, Comly, Comley, and Cumley around this time period, and from Sanford's generation has become Cumley. He married Pleasant Ann HARDWICK, daughter of Pleasant and Lucy Dooley Hardwick, on December 25, 1883 in Paris, Monroe Co., Missouri.

Sanford, Pleasant, and their family moved to Colorado circa 1899, settling first in Bachelor Town, Mineral county, Colorado. They had traveled with Samuel and Samantha A. Dickerson and their family. Samantha was Pleasant's older sister. In the early 1900s, the family moved to Wray joining Sanford's oldest brother, David Henderson CUMLEY and his wife Viola, who had previously arrived in Wray, April 22, 1886. Sanford was a farmer for most of his life, except for his short stint as a miner in Mineral county. Sanford died January 8, 1917 of an asthma attack while riding a train from Eckley to Yuma. Pleasant died the following year, December 13, 1918, from complications arising after a bout with the Spanish Influenza. They are both buried in Grandview Cemetery in Wray.

Sanford and Pleasant had the following children:
Clarence I. (1884-1888) who died young in Missouri, Chester C. "Chess" (1886-1960), Minnie Bell (1890-1981), William Clyde (1891-1959), Hiram "Pete" (1893-1969), Robert H. (1896-1974, and Ola May (1898-1969) all born in Missouri. The two youngest, Beulah (1905-1999) and Howard (1908-1979) were born in Colorado.
